Good Morning,

Does anyone know of a source of Book templates (free)
that a newbie might have access to, for study?

TIA

Using Framers to network for job-hunting?

2009-03-20 Thread Peter Courlis

Framers

Seems like it is an appropriate time for a SpinOff [JOBS] list...
This economic storm is going to be with us awhile, therefore,
I suggest we'll share a lot of interest in a Spin Off List...

Frame 8 - unicode support

2007-07-25 Thread Peter Courlis
Hello

I am sure that this question has been "kneaded" 100 times, on this list,
but I've missed it...

Is there a S/W application or DTP S/W that is used for
Arabic, Farsi (left to right) languages in popular use, today?

thanks

peter

Dov Isaacs wrote: Absolutely NOT!

FrameMaker does NOT support right-to-left languages
such as Hebrew, Arabic, and Farsi. You can type the
Unicode characters, but they will appear left-to-right
and the various language rules (context sensitive rules,
ligatures, etc.) are not obeyed.

TW hiring qualifications was: RE: Entry Level Technical Writer - Contract - Moorpark, CA

2007-05-16 Thread Peter Courlis
I like these views on qualifications. Very revealing,
however, I am convinced that to do or accomplish
anything (task or objective) in life, there is but one
key word and that is: motivation.

Do you, or more correctly how do you assess
the motivation of the candidate?

Thanks for comments

  Rene, All,

Be careful about rejecting applicants without a degree, and don't count on
an applicant having a degree being qualified for the job.

As a Tech Pubs Manager for 10 years, I disqualified several people with MAs
and even PhDs because they had little or no technical experience. And I
hired more than one writer with no degree but had a great deal of tehnical
experience and writing talent as well. I would strongly encourage you to
look at each applicant individually and consider equivalent experience when
screening and hiring writers.

I suggest that you consider other degrees besides English as well. A degree
in English does not by itself qualify anyone to be a TECHNICAL writer. I'd
personally rather hire someone with a degree in engineering or computer
science and who is a good writer. But people with those degrees are usually
sw developers or designers, not writers.

Well, I guess I can kind of see both sides. I've been a tech writer at
my company for a year and a half, and it is frustrating when others
assume that if you can type and spell
(or *not* spell..."hey, that's what spell-check is for, right?") then
you're fully qualified to be a tech writer.

But it is hard to break out of the "admin" mold. I don't have a degree
in English, but I have a BA in Psychology. I majored in Psych because
I thought the classes were really quite interesting, not having a
specific career goal in mind. After college, I started temping, and
ended up in an admin/customer service role at a manufacturing company.
Among other things, I wrote work instructions and the like for my
department, learned PageMaker and became an expert at Word. Two
acquisitions, two office moves and 2 years later, the tech writer
position here opened up, and I applied.

I think my former boss went to bat for me, as they moved the position
out of the marketing department and into the Engineering Services
department (where I was already), and here I am. I've since taken
classes in Frame and a Tech Writing course through University of IL at
Chicago, and I find I have an affinity for the job.

Moral of my story, I guess, is that it's not a bad thing to think
outside the box, hiring-wise, but yes, it is hard to effectively weed
out the unqualified while finding the right person for the job.

Internal candidates always get phone screening, so I'd have to call them. I
always asked what they felt were their qualifications, and they all
responded that they had "good English" and were experts with MS Word. They
wrote lots of corresondence and updated their draft letters with the "edits"
from their bosses, so they "knew" how to handle document review. We had to
start posting BA or higher in English or directly relevant field as a
minimal requirement with no "equivalency" allowed.

My online office activities are fairly limited. No one else in my office is

I could possibly be the lucky recipient of so many spams that I don't

Not only is it getting annoying, but in this day and age you'd think they

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Peter Courlis
Good Morning,

I want to learn more about Framemaker,
I have Ver. 5.5 and have fooled with that but
need more experience...

The prices of the latest version scare me, unless
I had a contract or revenue input from writing...

Recognizing that ver. 5.5 has basic functionality,
what would be a next step?
Is it worth searching EBay for ver. 6.0 or try
to find ver. 7.1 at a reasonable price?

On occasion, I find late versions of "Upgrade" packages
available on EBay... Would some version of Upgrade 7.0
(or 7.1) bring my ver. 5.5 up to the next current level?

The recent List discussion on Jahred's "Beyond the Basics"
has stirred my curiosity, therefore I have found a copy
of that text to read and review...

Any comments appreciated
A (latent) newbie Writer.

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Peter Courlis
Good Afternoon,

Dov Isaacs said (in reference to Framemaker):
"what is hawked on EBay is either pirated or
stolen goods."

Gosh, I am happy that you told me that.
I have seen Framemaker listed on EBay that stipulates
"installed on one machine, only" and other variants of this
statement.

So I did wonder about that (registration and installation)
and said to myself:
"Well how would you know?"

So unless that it was stated that "it is new" or Shrink-wrapped,
and that "it is returnable" I do not even consider reading more...
I recently saw a Ver 7.2 (on EBay) with an attractive price,
that I got excited about, until I read down into the Listing and it said
"Absolutely No Returns"...
So I said: "I don't think so !!!"

Regards

Peter

Ignoring the fact that Microsoft is famous for talking about
features in future products that never actually make it into the
release, or that possible release dates are rarely met, doesn't
your QA guy realize that PDFs don't store information the same way
as normal documents? They don't necessarily store paragraphs as
paragraphs or even store words as words-- but may store them as
separate groupings of letters. And elements on the PDF page aren't
necessarily generated in the order you expect. (See page 25 of the PDF at this
link:
http://www.planetpdf.com/planetpdf/pdfs/pdf2k/02E/gstaas_howpdfworks.pdf.)
(I've seen a better explanation of this somewhere, but couldn't find it.)

So any program that reads a PDF takes its best guess in
reconstituting text back into words and paragraphs. In other
words, what you see in the PDF may not be what you get in the
converted Word doc, nor in the regenerated PDF.? I found this
description of the Word 2013 PDF editing feature to back that up:

With Word 2013, you can convert a PDF document into a Word document and edit
the content.
To convert a PDF, you open it like you would any other document.
1. Click File > Open > Browse.
2. Find the PDF and click Open.
The converted document might not have a perfect page to page correspondence
with the original. The conversion works best with mostly textual documents.

Notice that last part. "The converted document might not have a
perfect page to page correspondence with the original. The
conversion works best with mostly textual documents." In other
words, prepare for problems. Expect to lose your previous
formatting. Unless you are editing simple business letters or
novels, problems are pretty much guaranteed. (Here's the link:
http://www.liveside.net/2012/06/29/exclusive-microsoft-word-2013-to-support-built-in-pdf-editing/.)

PDFs are meant to be final output only. To fix typos in a PDF, the standard
procedure is to fix the source file and regenerate a corrected PDF. (If you
don't fix the source, the typo just reappears the next time an updated PDF is
generated.)

Buying an old copy of FrameMaker

2012-10-02 Thread Peter Courlis
Shelly Schneider is (potentially) looking for a copy of Frame Maker 8.2.
Which brings to mind an interesting question.
Does anyone know of the distribution of F M'er (versions) in use?
That is, some earlier versions of F M'er are still in use in a production
environment
and too what extent are these earlier versions used (???)

Anyone have a "best guess" or some data ?

An additional contractor has been brought on by my company. If I can find a
low-price copy of FrameMaker, perhaps she won?t end up moving her docs to Word
(shudder). I know folks on this list swear by FrameMaker 8. FrameMaker 9 was a
bug-fest. I doubt I?ll find many people offering FrameMaker 10. I've had no
luck on eBay . I?d love to find a copy of FrameMaker 8 ?with a transferable
license (was it 8.2 everyone loved?). Does anybody have any thoughts or caveats
on how to go about this?? Thanks!

And THAT is perhaps the most damning assessment I could read, of
post-FM8. Wow...

As much as I love the old darling... I don't think that I'm going to be
using it after the next year or so (barring certain types of clients).
It's got too far to go to even catch up with current, top-notch XML
editor standards; and it doesn't seem to be moving the bar very far for
multiple modern output formats.

(FWIW, that's why I was off-list for almost six years: working long-term
for a client that's on DITA and uses a seriously robust editor.)

Autonumber chapters in Frammaker 5.5 ...

2006-05-06 Thread Peter Courlis
Need help in getting autonumbering to work...

I am using Framemaker 5.5.

Have "bookfile" with several chapters in this bookfile.
Each chapter (obviously) is a separate file (dot fm).
Each chapter file start on Right Master page.
Each Chapter has Header such as
  Introduction Chapter 1
Font->Paragraphs->Designer
Paragraph Tag: chapter_title
Autonumber format (box): checked
entered: "C: Chapter: "
clk Apply button
clk Update All button
Shift-> Save all files

Can not autonumber Chapter Numbers.
Performed above with Chapter 1 file open and cursor
inserted at chapter heading...

Obvious question:
How do I get Chapters to autonumber?
(Files or chapters auto number for pagination OK (???)

thanks in advance ...

Help, Autonumber chapters in Frammaker 5.5 ...

2006-05-07 Thread Peter Courlis
Obvious question:
How do I get Chapters to autonumber?
(Files or chapters auto number for pagination OK (???)

As one person indicated:
Format->Document->Numbering
and Numbering Dialog box comes up...
But this Dialog Box only effects Page Numbering,
there is nothing there for Chapter Numbering.

Select Paragraph Designer->Numbering Tab

allows setting of Chapter Title (and other defined headers)
via drop down list box.
So selecting Chapter, allows one to add building blocks
such as to Chapter title formating to increment
Chapter title (in Book file)...

Michael Lewis wrote: Peter Courlis:

> Need help in getting autonumbering to work...

> I am using Framemaker 5.5.

Are you setting the numbering properties for each chapter file? You can do
this at book level, by clicking on the filename then going to Format ->
Document -> Numbering. Or you can open the chapter file, go to the same spot
to set the numbering properties, then set the book-level properties as "Read
from File". In either case, all chapters except the first need "Continue
from previous file".

What I can't remember is whether 5.5 has a "Chapter" tab in the Numbering
dialog, or whether it's all done from the "Paragraph" tab.

Grope around in that general direction, and you should find what you need.

Framemaker Up Grade to 7.1

2006-05-30 Thread Peter Courlis
Framers,

Frequently, I find on EBay, an upgrade software package
that will allow upgrading FM'er to vers. 7.1...
However, I have not been able to determine what
"basic version" this upgrade applies to...
For example, will the FM'er Upgrade 7.1 bring a
basic version 6.0, up to 7.1?
Or stretching the point, will that vers. 7.1 Upgrade software
bring FM'er vers. 5.5 up to the 7.1 level?

Thanks for any comments...

* Vertical side-by-side. A LCD monitor is easy to rotate, of course.
These are most often straight up and down. I tried it but it felt

* Horizontal /one above the other/. I kid you not. I usually see
this configuration with the upper monitor tilted /forward/ (top

configuration has a very futuristic/spaceship look.

I have seen a few quad monitor setups, which are most likely from
multiple machines.

In my current configuration, I devote the left-hand panel to all my
normal work, and use the right-hand panel exclusively for e-mail. I
think that the biggest hurdle to overcome is switching my mindset. I am
just not used to having this much screen space, so I do things in an
old-fashioned style. I often find myself switching between app windows
rather than moving one off to the second display.

features in future products that never actually make it into the
release, or that possible release dates are rarely met, doesn't
your QA guy realize that PDFs don't store information the same way
as normal documents? They don't necessarily store paragraphs as
paragraphs or even store words as words-- but may store them as
separate groupings of letters. And elements on the PDF page aren't
necessarily generated in the order you expect. (See page 25 of the PDF at this
link:
http://www.planetpdf.com/planetpdf/pdfs/pdf2k/02E/gstaas_howpdfworks.pdf.)
(I've seen a better explanation of this somewhere, but couldn't find it.)

So any program that reads a PDF takes its best guess in
reconstituting text back into words and paragraphs. In other
words, what you see in the PDF may not be what you get in the
converted Word doc, nor in the regenerated PDF.

(If you
don't fix the source, the typo just reappears the next time an updated PDF is
generated.)

Re: Buying an old copy of FrameMaker

2012-10-02 Thread Peter Courlis
Shelly Schneider is (potentially) looking for a copy of Frame Maker 8.2.
Which brings to mind an interesting question.
Does anyone know of the distribution of F M'er (versions) in use?
That is, some earlier versions of F M'er are still in use in a production
environment
and too what extent are these earlier versions used (???)

Anyone have a "best guess" or some data ?

An additional contractor has been brought on by my company. If I can find a
low-price copy of FrameMaker, perhaps she won’t end up moving her docs to Word
(shudder). I know folks on this list swear by FrameMaker 8. FrameMaker 9 was a
bug-fest. I doubt I’ll find many people offering FrameMaker 10. I've had no
luck on eBay . I’d love to find a copy of FrameMaker 8  with a transferable
license (was it 8.2 everyone loved?). Does anybody have any thoughts or caveats
on how to go about this?  Thanks!

As much as I love the old darling... I don't think that I'm going to be

It's got too far to go to even catch up with current, top-notch XML

I like these views on qualifications. Very revealing,
however, I am convinced that to do or accomplish
anything (task or objective) in life, there is but one
key word and that is: motivation.

Do you, or more correctly how do you assess
the motivation of the candidate?

Thanks for comments

hired more than one writer with no degree but had a great deal of tehnical
experience and writing talent as well.

What version of Frame to Get Started ?

2008-05-15 Thread Peter Courlis
Good Morning,

I want to learn more about Framemaker,
I have Ver. 5.5 and have fooled with that but
need more experience...

The prices of the latest version scare me, unless
I had a contract or revenue input from writing...

Recognizing that ver. 5.5 has basic functionality,
what would be a next step?
Is it worth searching EBay for ver. 6.0 or try
to find ver. 7.1 at a reasonable price?

On occasion, I find late versions of "Upgrade" packages
available on EBay... Would some version of Upgrade 7.0
(or 7.1) bring my ver. 5.5 up to the next current level?

The recent List discussion on Jahred's "Beyond the Basics"
has stirred my curiosity, therefore I have found a copy
of that text to read and review...

Any comments appreciated
A (latent) newbie Writer.

RE: What version of Frame to Get Started ?

Regards

Peter

Good Morning,

Does anyone know of a source of Book templates (free)
that a newbie might have access to, for study?

TIA

Re: Using Framers to network for job-hunting?

2009-03-20 Thread Peter Courlis

Framers

Seems like it is an appropriate time for a SpinOff [JOBS] list...
This economic storm is going to be with us awhile, therefore,
I suggest we'll share a lot of interest in a Spin Off List...

Font->Paragraphs->Designer
Paragraph Tag: chapter_title
Autonumber format (box): checked
entered: "C: Chapter: "
clk Apply button
clk Update All button
Shift-> Save all files

Can not autonumber Chapter Numbers.
Performed above with Chapter 1 file open and cursor
inserted at chapter heading...

Obvious question:
How do I get Chapters to autonumber?
(Files or chapters auto number for pagination OK (???)

thanks in advance ...

RE: Help, Autonumber chapters in Frammaker 5.5 ...

2006-05-07 Thread Peter Courlis
Obvious question:
How do I get Chapters to autonumber?
(Files or chapters auto number for pagination OK (???)

As one person indicated:
Format->Document->Numbering
and Numbering Dialog box comes up...
But this Dialog Box only effects Page Numbering,
there is nothing there for Chapter Numbering.

Select Paragraph Designer->Numbering Tab

allows setting of Chapter Title (and other defined headers)
via drop down list box.
So selecting Chapter, allows one to add building blocks
such as to Chapter title formating to increment
Chapter title (in Book file)...

Michael Lewis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Peter Courlis:

>

Re: Dual Monitor(s) ??s

When using dual Monitors, what video card do you use?

  -pc

Joe Malin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: A slight hijack: for people who are using
dual monitors, what
configuration do you use? Here at work, we have people using dual LCD
displays. I see the following configurations in use:

* Horizontal side-by-side, most often "tilted back" (top back,
bottom up) but sometimes also straight up and down. This is what I
  use.
* Vertical side-by-side. A LCD monitor is easy to rotate, of course.
These are most often straight up and down. I tried it but it felt
  cramped.
* Horizontal /one above the other/. I kid you not. I usually see
this configuration with the upper monitor tilted /forward/ (top
forward, bottom back) and the lower monitor tilted opposite. The
configuration has a very futuristic/spaceship look.
