RE: stability FM 11RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version
Mine was with xrefs - there was some memory leak involved with displaying the xref panel and if you used the scroll wheel on the mouse it would cause it to freeze, then crash. From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Craig Ede Sent: May-13-15 9:26 AM To: framers Subject: stability FM 11RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version The stability problems I saw with FM 11 were mostly related to Tracked Changes. I found that it would crash after a generate when saving the book file. It would save all the other files fine, but saving the book file would cause a crash. I found that open and saving the book as mif then resaving as a regular book file would allow a couple of book saves before the problem recurred. The procedure I was following was: Generate the book (twice) Save all Files in book from the book using the Shift key option that allow that. Close all files in book (again using the Shift key option). SaveAsPDF from the book. The crash would occur when the book file was saved. FM 12 is definitely more stable. Don't use the updates beyond the second update (12.02?) if you need CMYK printing to work. Thank you. Craig ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. I can endorse the stability of FM12 - I was looking for the crash log location the other day realized that I haven't had a crash yet with it (unlike almost daily ones with FM11). -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Shmuel Sent: May-13-15 3:41 AM To: Robert Lauriston; Caroline Tabach; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version FM9 broke some keyboard shortcuts but in FM11 they work again. I don’t know about FM 11, but I had similar problems to those reported by Craig with FM 10 and Tracked Changes, especially if I used change tracking in conjunction with conditional text. I’ve given up using change tracking because of that. Here's my list of bugs from FM10 (I had most of these problems with FM9 but didn't have to use it enough to bother making a list), have they all been fixed? 1. Document window size and position are not saved. 2. Docked panels often appear behind the document window, and I have to resize, minimize, or close the document window to use them. Since window size and position are not saved, I have to resize them dozens of times a day. 3. Sometimes I have the opposite problem: the side of a window is completely blocked by the character or paragraph tag catalog, so I have to minimize, close, or move the panel before I can resize the window. 4. When I open a panel, sometimes it appears behind another panel that's already open, and I have to move one or the other before I can use it. 5. The first time I press Ctrl-f, I can just type the search string, but after that the focus within the Find/Change seems to be random, so I can't. 6. After a book has been open for a while, it no longer responds to menu commands. I can double-click files to open them or use the right-click menu, but if I try to select a menu command such as Edit Update Book or File Save As PDF the book window minimizes and is no longer active. The only workaround I've found is to close and reopen the book window, which I end up doing dozens of times a day. 7. A separate FrameMaker button appears on the taskbar for each file that's open. 8. The FrameMaker console window appears behind the application window. Bringing it to the front is sometimes difficult. 9. When I first start FrameMaker, Ctrl-F6 switches between open windows. After a while, it stops working. (I can use alt-key menu navigation.) 10. Alt-key menu letters are not displayed for all menu commands (e.g. Documents on the Window menu). 11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing Alt-Tab again takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more than one document is open) instead of back to the other application. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version
upgrade to from FM7.x to FM12 $800upgrade from FM 7.x to Technical Communications Suite $1200 For the extra $400 you get full Acrobat XI and not just the headless distiller FrameMaker uses when you buy it alone. That's worth $400 to me.Besides that you get RoboHelp 11, Captivate 8, and Presenter 10 as well and can play around with the Help options offered by RoboHelp. Opening older FM files does not require MIF save. Just open them and resave. I do it all the time with FM5.0 files and up. Copy your older files to new directories so that you still have them in case you think something went amiss. The UNICODE stuff is only a problem when backsaving to versions before 8 or 7.2 which I don't recommend. As someone else said, the retooling of ZapfDingbats (in bullets, etc.) and Symbol font usage is perhaps the biggest issue. Usually you can pick a glyph from you normal font(s) to replace these special use fonts since the modern versions of the fonts have many more glyphs. If you have the Symbol font, you don't have to replace Symbols with the simpler same font glyph unless you want to. RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version
It's been so long since I have been using Frame 7.2 that it's hard to comment about a learning curve. Certainly, some of the basic stuff hasn't changed much (sigh) but there have been a lot of interface changes and some usability improvements. I think you will have to convert to MIF. You may want to get a copy of MIF2GO, which is now open source and free. That will speed up the process. I'd stick with WebWorks. It's fast and stable and you're familiar with the workflow. You have some template rebuilding to do, but it would be easier than trying to learn RoboHelp. (The publishing features in Frame 12 are fairly basic and you will need RoboHelp to do any serious customization). RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version
You can now create all those from FM12 directly; however, the learning curve will be a bit of a shock - the UI changed completely starting in FM9. I think at 7.2 you're over the Unicode barrier already so fonts may or may not be an issue. Some finer control over the publishing (generating) of help outputs can be done using the Tech Comm Suite (which includes RH, FM, Acrobat Pro Captivate), but may not be necessary in your case. Personally, I'd download a trial copy of TCS5 and try it out on a non-production machine with copies of your FM7.2 content play around with it for the 30 days of the trial. -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Caroline Tabach Sent: May-12-15 5:53 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version Hi, At the moment we are using FrameMaker 7.2 and ePublisher Pro version 9.2 to create PDF files, and a collections of help files which are mostly html, with 2 or 3 .chm files The applications mostly run on Internet Explorer (and the .chm files are for the 2 that are not over IE). Re: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version
Hi Caroline, I recently did this same upgrade (going from FM 7 to FM12). The learning curve was not bad. Mostly, it's getting used to a totally new (and way better, in my opinion) user interface. I recommend taking the FrameMaker 10 essentials course that is in Lynda.com. Adobe changed the UI at ver. 10, so virtually everything that is in that class applies to FM12. File conversion, so far, has been pretty clean. I've had only minor problems, I have a set of templates that I use for various parts of our manuals (Title pages, TOC, Preface, Chapter files, and Appendices. Each of these templates has a number of paragraph and character formats that are unique to them. Once I was up to speed on FM12 (about a week, I think), I converted the FM7 templates to FM12 (start by opening the files in FM12 and allowing FM12 to make them FM12 docs). Then, I went through my paragraph and character format catalogs and modified the tags, as necessary. From this point on, when I open a manual that was created in FM7, I first open the book file, then open each doc in the book file, save it (as FM12), then close it. Then I open my templates and import the formats (usually just paragraph and character) as appropriate. I then save the book (as FM12) and I'm ready to work! I have some manuals that are 600+ pages and the whole process for them took maybe an hour or less. Good luck! RE: Help Creation Flow and Upgrading from version 7.2 to the latest version
That's exactly how I did it (full jump from FM7 to 12). I also took the FM essentials course in Lynda.com, which covered all of the new stuff with the UI.
