RE: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-24 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Gillian,
I had this problem with files that were created with older versions of visio,
that were *embedded* in my fm file. I had this particular problem especially
when I tried changing the conditional text settings. In one of the individual
files, I had isolated the problematic figure and then had to delete it in order
to work with the file. I found an older copy of the figure in my backup files
somewhere.
For these files that you mention with the funny hex endings - if you open that
file in fm you'll see that one or more of you figures is shown as a grey box.
That may give a clue as to the corrupted figure.

As far as the books go, I also had trouble with saving books as PDF when
changing conditional text settings. I tried the windows hotfix, but was still
having other problems (I'm running XP/SP2- TCS 1.0). In the end, IT just
reformatted my disk - so everything so far is ok - haven't done major
book-building yet, then I'll know for sure if all is ok.
Orly.

Has anyone had the problem where Frame saves the frame files with suffixes
like blah.fm.5a3? What's the cause and solution?

RE: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

2010-05-24 Thread Lou Martindale
I had this problem earlier this spring. I believe I was using Frame 6.0 at
the time. I found that renaming the file by just removing the number suffix
I could open the file, but had missing graphics. After long, agonizing trial
and error by my IT guy, we found out it was not corrupted graphics, it was
XP Sp3. We tried the hot fix and it didn't help. Finally I was upgraded to
Frame 9. I was able to import my missing graphics without any problems and
no more weird file names.

The down side was my copy of Frame was so old I couldn't upgrade and I had
to purchase a new copy at a pretty significant amount. I was pretty unhappy
about that as I was doing just fine with Frame 6.

Hope this helps.
Lou

Re: SAving frame files with numbers at the end (Flato, Gillian)

2010-05-22 Thread Oran Petersen

RE: Subject: SAving frame files with numbers at the end

Hi Gillian

These numbers are hex codes that Frame uses to manage the save operations. They
should exist only for seconds or less during the save. We saw this very
frequently in past years, before we switched to a newer server version. My
guess is that you are working across a server connection in which the
permissions for the server transmission are in conflict with the Frame save
operations, which disrupt the save and leave it hanging with the hex
extension. I also guess that if you moved the files to your local machine the
issue would go away.

We also found that only certain files had the issue, so there is a content
related factor associated with this as well. Sometimes mif washing or other
refreshing would clean it up. If you are on Windows XP Service Pack 3 you can
have all sorts of security related issues across a server and elsewhere.

Our conclusion is that there is something in the server set-up and machine
connection  that is causing the issue with Frame, but we never did determine
exactly what the combination of conditions were. We did determine that it was
machine related and user account related. Changing machines or users would
often alleviate the issue.

Gillian,

FM on XP/SP3 or Vista does not save documents with OLE objects.
Replace them with regular referenced images or turn back to XP/SP2.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Frame doesn't crash though. What happens though is that the next time I go to
save the file, Frame tells me it can't save the file because the file has a
strange suffix.

Do you also see .recover files?

Seems like those are the result of Frame crashes.
