I was wondering what you were referring to, Steven, until I looked.

That person at the far right of the frame is behind a window that has
chicken-wire embedded in it. You can see the edge of the window
appear above Ricky Leacock's head. It seemed normal to me since I
worked there for 2 years, but realize that it appears as an artifact
to someone unfamiliar with that strange window.

So chicken-wire window, not a scanning artifact. Not sure that would
be apparent in a lower-res scan.

The Kinetta in Paris is getting the new perf sensor upgrade later this month.
They have the first of the current version of Kinetta.

The Kinetta uses uptick perf sensing, and if the splice isn't punched out
perfectly it will jump. A claw might not jump, but it can eat perfs after a
bad splice, which a Kinetta can't do.

We always overscan, because some splices will jump -- it takes about 15 seconds
to reposition a frame to deal with a bad splice in Resolve (which is free).

Projectors can damage film. DuAll's system can't handily contrasty or
underexposed film (they say so on their website).

Moira:

It's a projector-based system, and HD is the highest resolution.

To see why HD is not enough resolution for HD, look at this,

If you want to see Kinetta 3.3K scans of super-8 footage on a big screen go see
OUR NIXON at the IFC. All of the Super-8 was scanned on a Kinetta -- which is
about 60% of the movie. Note that some of it was scanned from bad Super-8
contact prints as that was all that was available. Also note that HR Haldeman
was not very good at shooting! But despite that, the S8 looks good on big
screen.

Best,

Are you in NYC?

Telecine is a terrible process -- it's video-centric, rarely can handle the
dynamic range of reversal stocks.

Kinetta Archival is opening next week in NYC at 7 W. 22nd Street.
Artist-friendly, scanning at 5x the resolution of HD (which makes a big
difference).
