Solaris 10 zones / jails

2004-03-03 Thread Stefan Bethke
Just picked this announcement up from /.:
http://groups.google.com/groups?
selm=c1j796%2424c%241%40news1nwk.SFbay.Sun.COMoe=UTF-8output=gplain

Apparently, it is conceptually similiar to FreeBSD jails, but has
slightly more advanced configuration management. Maybe some incentive
for an enterprising hacker to move our implementation forward in that
respect as well...

Re: Zones

2002-02-10 Thread Anjali Kulkarni

I meant is there something in Linux akin in *functionality* to the zones of
FreeBSD? So, in Linux, the name might not be zones but the functionality
should be the same as the zones of FreeBSD. To answer this question, one
should know what zones in FreeBSD are, quite well. So, for example, zone
allocation is really fast because large memory is pre-allocated and is kept
as a linked list of free elements, and you cannot really free a zone to the
system till all elements of that zone are free etc.(I dont know a lot about
zones myself, otherwise I wouldnt need to ask this question). Something in
Linux which achives the same result...
And I think there are a few people(who were) involved in Linux development
on this list, so I posted it here.

Regards,
Anjali

as for me I have no idea what a 'zone' is in Linux..

 timezone?
memory zone allocator in the kernel?
 routing zones?

   Hello,

Your best bet for general questions is the
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailig list.

It might be quick and easy, but historically, the people in -hackers
are not interested in quick and easy. They're more interested in
   long, drawn-out, and complicated.

Re: Zones

It really isn't a question of beneath their dignity, it's just not
what the mailing list is for.

People who are interested in answering easy questions read -questions.
People hwo are interested in discussing technical issues read
-hackers. While there is a certain amount of overlap, you're more
likely to get a better answer asking people who are interested in
answering questions.

PS: If I had any idea what a zone in Linux was, I would have just
answered the question. Sorry.

[Replies have been pointed to -chat.]

Michael Lucas [EMAIL PROTECTED] types:
People who are interested in answering easy questions read -questions.

Um - people who are interested in helping others by answering
questions read -question. Not all the questions on -questions are
easy. Not all of them have answers.

People who are interested in discussing technical issues read
-hackers. While there is a certain amount of overlap, you're more
likely to get a better answer asking people who are interested in
 answering questions.

That's certainly right. If you ask a question properly, the worst case
on -questions is that you'll be pointed to another list - -scsi and
-multimedia are good examples, or -hackers for some - where people who
are more likely to know the answer hang out.
