There was a patch for all PHP versions:

Since i'm not the maintainer of PHP 5.6 i did not submit it for this 
version. But if wanted we can reconsider it and just open a revision/PR 
for this version.


Just as notice for all: the switch to oniguruma6 for PHP 5.6 was 
committed by me and merged into quarterly right now:
