NetBSD is the BSD that'll boot on your kitchen sink. FreeBSD is the one you want to run the 24x7 x86 or Sparc Server on. It's not easy to answer, if you don't have a specific application in mind. They both have good and bad points. They both have common things and vastly different parts from each other.
