With 11:37 left in the game and Florida (3-0, 1-0) holding a 23-6 lead, the
Vols recovered a fumble by Tim Tebow at their own 2.

Reading this you'd think UT was 98 yards from the UF goal line when their
offense took the field. The article leaves out the fact that the fumble was
returned past the UT 30.

Kiffin said he preferred to turn to his tailbacks, who had little trouble
moving the chains against the Gators' defense, rather than the Vols' struggling
passing game.
On that one drive perhaps. They struggled to get first downs all day after
their opening drive until this (penalty aided) one.

With about 2 minutes left in the game and a chance to score, Kiffin gave
Jonathan Crompton - who had already thrown one interception - a chance to throw
down field to Denarius Moore. The pass was picked off by Ahmad Black for
Crompton's seventh interception of the season.
Technically, your team has a chance to score on any play, but didn't that pass
play originate from somewhere near midfield? Again, from reading the article
you'd think they were in the red zone.

I think that anyone with any common sense can see that we're heading
in the right direction... Our biggest issue on defense is youth...
That and stupidity on part of our main linebacker and defensive
leader, who got back-to-back unsportsmanlike penalty calls in the 2nd
quarter and got an early view of the locker room for the remainder of
the game... They had to put a freshman in his place, and it made a
huge difference... And not in a good way...

I've already been rooting in your yard, Leon... You probably just
thought it was moles or gophers :)

Thanks again for the birthday wishes... It was a good one :)

[gatortalk] Re: Let's play Pick 'Em

2009-09-22 Thread Cecilia
My husband Dave suggested that I need to start making my picks with the spread
in mind and not just pick based on emotions.

Ahem... please note that he and I are tied right now so - spread or emotions -
neither is working that great.

Steve, thanks for making me feel a lot better about my picks. I'm ahead of
you. LMAO.

My ultimate goal as a Gator fan is to be ahead of all the schools we play,
in wins over the years, and then dominate them. Is that too much to ask?
My brother says that all he ever wanted was respect from the other teams and
the sportswriters in the nation; well, he's got that. Now the other teams
hate and fear us, which is even better. It is a great time to be a Gator,
especially since I remember losing to Rice, Houston, Richmond (maybe a tie)
and those lesser teams in the 1950s up until the 1990s, and having the Dawgs
beat us like a drum. Life is GOOD!

BTW, how close are we to evening up the score with LSU, Alabama and the
others?

I just responed to a post on GatorCountry with this information, but thought
a certain individual in Tennessee might like this..

This was in response to a Dawg fan that said the UF - GA series runs in 19
year cycles, and the last one ended in 2008, so GA is now ready for a 19
year run of dominance. Silly pups!

The problem with your dawg acquaintance is he has arbitrarily chosen 19 year
ranges, if you chose 15 year ranges UF's winning percentage looks like this:

1934-1948 --- 2 -12
1949-1963 --- 11 - 4
1964-1978 --- 5 - 9 - 1
1979-1993 --- 6 - 9
1994-2008 --- 12 - 3

So over 15 year stretches, the dominance doesn't look so great. Also, over
the last 75 years, Georgia is only 1 game above .500 over the Gators. This
year, we even the score...

P.S. Since WWII Florida is 34-30 against the evil ones.

On Monday, Kiffin said he didn’t want to respond to Meyer’s comment.
But asked whether he was worried about the flu also hitting Tennessee, he said:
“I don’t know. I guess we’ll wait and after we’re not excited about a
performance, we’ll tell you everybody was sick.”

This moron just can't get out of his own way, can he?

On Monday, Kiffin said he didn’t want to respond to Meyer’s comment.
But asked whether he was worried about the flu also hitting Tennessee, he said:
“I don’t know. I guess we’ll wait and after we’re not excited about a
performance, we’ll tell you everybody was sick.”

This moron just can't get out of his own way, can he?

"Gee Daddy, I poked the hornets nest once and didn't get stung too bad,
so what's wrong with continuing to poke it?"

Our hearts and prayers are with our brother's family as they deal with this

John, I'm assuming that Roberto played Pick 'em.

2009-09-22 Thread Arthur Polhill

I just got off the phone with the UF Alumni Association and there are no away game Gator Tailgating gatherings  this year due to budget cuts.

Some local Gator clubs are planning events, such as the pre-game Gator Gathering at Seawells in Columbia, SC prior to the USC game.

As far as I can tell the Blue Grass Gator Club in Lexington is not operational and doing nothing.

So plan accordingly.

 A. Leon Polhill, GatorFriends are the family that we choose for ourselves.

One small correction. TN did not drive for a TD from their own 4 yard line.
Tebow fumbled at the 4 but the fumble was returned out to around the 30.
They
then drove for a TD aided by a bs celebration penalty after a sack. The sack
probably would have prevented the drive because it would have beeen 2nd and
very long at that point.

For the time being, I will let them bark about having the all-time record,

All time records:

Alabama: 14-20-0

Auburn: 38-42-2

Arkansas: 7-1-0

Semis: 32-19-2

Flea bags: 38-46-2

Kentucky: 42-17-0

LSU: 29-23-3

Miami: 26-28-0

Mississippi State: 32-18-2

Ole Miss: 10-12-1

South Carolina: 22-4-3

Tennessee: 20-19-0

Vanderbilt: 30-9-2

Overall Bowls: 17-19

Only 8 to go against Georgia. There should be an asterisk beside the 1942
loss to them. All our players had left the University and enlisted in the
service to go fight in World War II. Georgia kept all their players (draft
dodgers) and thus beat us 72-0. Frank Sinkwich won the Heisman that year.
There should be an asterisk beside his name in the Heisman winners list for
the same reason.

When Spurrier "hung 50 on 'em" at Athens it was little payment for that
game.

That's the one record I'd like to live to see change. I hope we beat them
by 80 this year.

2009-09-22 Thread Ken Kirkley

38-47-2 all time. Only 9 years to go before we even this one up!

For the time being, I will let them bark about having the all-time record,
just knowing that they have to go back to a time when Army was a perenial
natioanl title contender to reclaim their greatness (not that they ever had
any to claim).

With UT's game plan last Saturday, we win 100 times out of a 100.

Had it gambled more, it might have increased those odds to a 1 in 10 chance
of winning.

But - doing so would have also increased the chance of a blowout.

It was clear that UT preferred the certainty of a close loss to the chance
of a blowout, even if it had to abandon all hope of win.

The presumed strategy would relate to recruiting, and showing how much
"closer" UT has come to UF.

[gatortalk] Great to be a Gator

2009-09-22 Thread jfranl

BTW, how close are we to evening up the score with LSU, Alabama and the
others?

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] Gainesville SUN GATOR Articles for Today (2009-09-22) [10 Articles]

2009-09-22 Thread Oliver Barry
I believe Urban was explaining why Tennessee was able to take the ball from
its 4 and score after Tebow's fumble. We were giving them the small gain
while guarding against the long pass. They ate clock for us. Who cares if
they take 10 minutes to score from there. They still had to score twice
more afterwards and there were only two minutes left when they got their
touchdown.

This is basic clock management and Kiffin should know it too. Question is,
why didn't they try to win instead of just eating up the game clock? They
have become Vanderbilt. "We almost beat Florida in '96 when they won their
first NC."

Now Tennessee can say they almost beat Florida when they won their fourth.
That ought to really help their recruiting. You're exactly right, Zeb.

I guess he's banking on being able to show potential recruits the score to show
that they are "that close" to UF.

I heard that some of the hotshot recruits that were in attendance at the game
thought it was a stupid strategy to not try and give your players a chance to
win.

I hope that as recruiting heats up, someone will remind them of that!  :)
