by Nathan Crabbe (Gainesville SUN)

The University of Florida’s campaign to encourage students to wear helmets on
scooters comes at an interesting time.
UF’s most famous student, Gator quarterback Tim Tebow, has been photographed on
campus riding his scooter without a helmet. As he recovers from a concussion,
one wonders if he’ll change his ways.
The safety campaign kicks off Thursday at 6 p.m. with a performance by
Gainesville musician Chris McCarty at the Reitz Union Amphitheater. The Shands
trauma unit will have an information booth there and scooter helmets will be
raffled off.

More power to the thinking that the Miami newspaper people just want to use and
abuse the power of Gators related news but at the same time tend to the needs
of scUM by teasing and slant language. I am going to start replying with all
these observations and encourage everybody else to do the same!!! What a bunch
of a$$es they have down there!!!

Yea, if it's your last semester, they only make you take however many
credits are needed to complete your graduation requirements. Matt Leinart
had one 1-credit course when he was at USC, and it was ball room dancing

I think the rules have to do with progress toward graduation.
They have to have completed a certain number of hours by the beginning of
year 2 and a certain number by the beginning of year 3, etc.
Someone I think UF was careful about checking the eligibility rules for
Time.

Personally, I am shocked that he doesn't wear a helmet. If for no other

Should Tebow wear a helmet on his scooter?
by Nathan Crabbe (Gainesville SUN)

The University of Florida’s campaign to encourage students to wear helmets
on scooters comes at an interesting time.
UF’s most famous student, Gator quarterback Tim Tebow, has been
photographed on campus riding his scooter without a helmet. As he recovers from
a concussion, one wonders if he’ll change his ways.
The safety campaign kicks off Thursday at 6 p.m. with a performance by
Gainesville musician Chris McCarty at the Reitz Union Amphitheater. The Shands
trauma unit will have an information booth there and scooter helmets will be
raffled off.

Meyer himself did a test with Tebow where he had to stand on one foot with his eyes closed. Is that "how do you feel?"And, that was only one test. You might make Tebow sit out against LSU. You may have pulled a Heisman candidate in the 3rd quarter of an away SEC game, but the man who is paid millions to make the right decision left him in the game. I'll mention your name to Jeremy Foley next time he calls, but I sorta think he'll stay with Meyer. I'm kinda happy about that. I'm not trying to start a fight with you, John, but the doctors and coaches are doing the right thing. They don't consult with sportswriters or Monday morning quarterbacks. That's why they're in the position they're in. If they say Tebow's good to go next Saturday, I have complete condidence he is.

I disagree with this. Other than MR Spectroscopy (which is hardly an exact science) there is nothing about a concussion that a CT or MR will be able to show you other than an intracranial bleed, which has already been ruled out.

The other tests are along the lines of "How do you feel?" "Have you experienced any headaches?" and "Do you feel drowsy?" They are not very exact procedures, are capable of being shaded by person answering, and there is a lot of concurrent causation of the symptoms (including the flu, which we know that TT has), leading to unclear decisions.

BTW, was anyone as mad as I was TT sat in the cart in the tunnel for a good 10 minutes or more waiting on the ambulance? If he had had an intracranial bleed, that time could have meant the difference between life and death.

Unfortunately  the Gator football team has had a lot more experience with concussions this year than any others I can remember.

I think one of the Offensive linemen had one (Patchan maybe?) and one of the safeties - early in the season (before the first game).  then Tebow and I read that one of the DBs, I think a corner back?

Not sure how many others

Original Message Subject: [gatortalk] Re: Would you play Tebow at LSU or make him rest? From: Helen Huntley Date: Wed, September 30, 2009 11:20 amTo: gatortalk@googlegroups.comI was interested in the stories today about the balance testing and such that they were doing with Tebow (and apparently with Meyer because he was interested). I was also impressed that UF has baseline testing for all the football players so they would be able to compare pre-injury and post-injury test results. It seems that that at least provides some objective measurement.

persistent headaches for three days afterwards, how long would they
hold their son out of contact. I would wager that your answers will
range from 4 to 6 weeks.

2009-09-30 Thread oliver
Well, I'm no doctor like you, I only know what I read. Meyer himself did a test
with Tebow where he had to stand on one foot with his eyes closed. Is that "how
do you feel?"
And, that was only one test.
You might make Tebow sit out against LSU. You may have pulled a Heisman
candidate in the 3rd quarter of an away SEC game, but the man who is paid
millions to make the right decision left him in the game. I'll mention your
name to Jeremy Foley next time he calls, but I sorta think he'll stay with
Meyer.
I'm kinda happy about that.
I'm not trying to start a fight with you, John, but the doctors and coaches are
doing the right thing. They don't consult with sportswriters or Monday morning
quarterbacks. That's why they're in the position they're in.
If they say Tebow's good to go next Saturday, I have complete condidence he is.

I disagree with this. Other than MR Spectroscopy (which is hardly an
exact science) there is nothing about a concussion that a CT or MR
will be able to show you other than an intracranial bleed, which has
already been ruled out.

The other tests are along the lines of "How do you feel?" "Have you
experienced any headaches?" and "Do you feel drowsy?" They are not
very exact procedures, are capable of being shaded by person
answering, and there is a lot of concurrent causation of the symptoms
(including the flu, which we know that TT has), leading to unclear
decisions.

BTW, was anyone as mad as I was TT sat in the cart in the tunnel for
a good 10 minutes or more waiting on the ambulance? If he had had an
intracranial bleed, that time could have meant the difference between
life and death.

I was interested in the stories today about the balance testing and such
that they were doing with Tebow (and apparently with Meyer because he was
interested). I was also impressed that UF has baseline testing for all the
football players so they would be able to compare pre-injury and post-injury
test results. It seems that that at least provides some objective
measurement.

I'm no expert either.

The one phrase that I could read clearly occurred on the sideline,
about 10 to 15 minutes after the hit. Tebow says something in
response to a question that looks like "I don't know" and then
clearly said "I don't know where I am" to a trainer.

I would be talking about it, simply because we didn't need TT after
the first quarter and we needed to give Brantley more experience.
It's the fundamental Hendrix equation.

Frankly, at our Gatorviewing party, we were uniformly shocked that
Tebow went into the game after halftime. This was before, and
independent of, the injury.

This is not like baseball, you can pull a player and then put him
back in. Give TT an extended halftime rest, and some IV fluids for
the flu. If Brantley does well, keep him out of the game. If the
unthinkable happens and UK mounts a comeback (against our defense? -
but still), we have a rested and recharged TT that we can put back in
the game.

No clue about Mack Brown. I only have enough room in my head to
follow one team, and know it pretty well.

lol :) sorry... but i really needed that laugh today... I just wanted it
to last a lil longer.

A basement in my moms house caved in (mostly) from all the rain last week...
so she's living in a hotel right now.
My dad was having chest pain over the weekend and refused to go to the
hospital (he''s fine right now).
WORK is driving me utterly nutso for the past ... oh... month.
Tebow got hurt saturday...
Dont get me started (again) on my pickems

2009-09-30 Thread Sean Houston
I was there, and I thought the Kentucky fans were just cheering that he had
gotten sacked, it was the biggest play of the game up to that point for
them. I would have cheered if I were them as well. I'm sure they were happy
they didn't have to see him anymore that day, but I didn't get the sense
from any of them that they were happy he was hurt. Again, just my opinion.
But, they just seemed like fans that were cheering a big stop on third down
for their team. As soon as it was apparent Tebow was actually hurt, there
was no celebration from the fans, or the players.

I taped the game and watched it when I got hom Sunday, and the penalty for
celebration is 50/50. I think they penalize players too much for that to
begin with. What do you really expect the guy to do? He just sacked the best
player in the history of the game on 3rd down to stop a drive. His team was
getting demolished. It was the first thing for him to be happy about all
day. He SHOULD be happy. In todays paper that players comments after the
game were, and I'm paraphrasing 'as soon as he saw Tebow was hurt, he felt
upset. He didn't want to see himy hurt and he wishes him a quick recovery'

I honestly don't think anybody handled the situation poorly. The Gator fans
in attendance showed great support for him, as did all the Florida players,
and I'm sure Tebow and his family really did appreciate it. The UK fans
cheered when he sat up as well.

My performance so far: 9 right, 5 right, 8 right, 4 right. That ties me for
66th place with 18 of my closest friends, including Leon, Jerry and Jay. We're
killin' 'em. LMAO.

My "performance" thus far: first week =  7 right; second week = 4; third = 6;
fourth = 5. That ties me for 161st place. Someone just shoot me.

to finish 3rd. For the year, Vince Santamaria still leads at 39-21, followed
by Dean Tilman,

Kathy Byrd-Hohn and Libby J at 33-27. Six games back! I can't remember a lead
like that, six

games.

No Pick 'Em this week as the Gators are off. Superman needs the week off, too,
I suspect.

Chris Collingsworth of course has a record that can never be broken. In
addition, he has the highest pass to touchdown ratio!

That was the dude!

Strange Kresser facts -

He played briefly in the NFL and threw for a TD for the Bengals

He threw for the 2nd longest TD pass in Florida history - without peeking
who knows the longest?

He held the record for the most passing yards in a game by a Junior in UF
history (I'm trying to see if TRex broke the record)

My point was that I don't see a dramatic drop-off in ability between the two
players:

One needs experience

The other has the flu and needed two IV bags before the game just to take
the field

In that context, I thought that pulling TT earlier than normal was the right
call, especially the way that he ended the first quarter with such a
flourish.

quarter, and I seem to recall some scorelines from that era that make
Saturday's 31-7 look downright close.
