Re: [Gendergap] Hairdresser

2011-09-21 Thread Sarah Stierch
I used Wikitrip recently, after reading about it in the Signpost. It's
addictive, and generally depressing when you see that men edit most the
articles about women.

Hairdresser is weird because it "disappeared" for quite sometime while being
a redirect to barber, so I'm not sure if it's the best example..

Regardless, the majority of the articles I look at (Feminism, Woman, Women's
rights, pretty standard stuff) are usually 95% male identifying editors.

One complaint about the app - when I go to click on the specific "regional"
demographics, a little window pops up stating how many users have
contributed from that area, and there is an "X" to exit that box, I keep
clicking the box and it won't close (so I can't view other regional
statistics). :D

Thanks for developing this tool!

Re: [Gendergap] Hairdresser

2011-09-21 Thread paolo massa
We have developed another tool, Wikitrip.
On Wikitrip, you can see the edits performed on every page of
Wikipedia over time
and you can see the geolocation of edits (for anonymous editors)
and you can see how many edits were performed by male and female
Wikipedians (for registered users who specified their *gender* in the
preferences)

For example, the page Hairdresser has been edited more by females than
males and it is very hard to find pages edited more by
(self-identified in the preferences as such) women. (Of course this
page is not one of the most edited ones so the difference between 17
and 18 edits is not very meaningful per se).

See https://sonetlab.fbk.eu/wikitrip/#|en|Hairdresser

On Wikitrip you can also check the equivalent page on every other
language Wikipedia! Just use the dropdown menu.

I'd love to hear your feedback about WikiTrip! ;)

Great start.

I think http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hairstyles has some hints at
other particular styles/trends to cover for both men and women. I'd also say
you should feel comfortable splitting the History of hairstyles into a
separate article if gets a lot bigger once men's hair stuff is added. :-)

It still needs lots of help though -- it needs non-Western material
added, plus information about men's hairstyles, plus it needs a nice
clean rewrite once it's complete. I might spend a little more time on

I probably don't need to say this, but these are personal edits, not

Yes, it is as simple as writing a good article.

Did you take a look at the article history? Would you prefer the last
pre-merger version
(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hairdresser&oldid=238820338)
over a redirect to a proper article about the same subject?

Actually, it's not as bad as you think. No one has written a good
hairdressers article. What we have is at Beauty salon, which has little
about beauty shop culture. What is needed is a several good articles:
probably hairdressing, beauty shop, and beauty salon.

2011-09-14 Thread Sydney Poore
Yes, as you have pointed out in other threads the whole area of women's
beauty is a mess.

Disorganized and under represented

Slight mention of hair stylists here, too.
