Smoothing gradient Q...

2001-01-12 Thread Jonathan Gift

Hi,

I'm doing a left to right gradient, dark blue to black so that a narrow
2 inch bank of blue apperas before fading into black. the problme is
that the band has uneven bars of various hue there. I tried Blur to
smooth it out, and adding another deeper colored layer, etc. No go. How
can I smooth this out?

Thanks.

Making Transparent from Non-Transparent

2001-01-12 Thread Jonathan Gift

Hi,

Second big question is I have a lot of old logos Istored on a black
background. Is there a way of turning the black transparent so that I
can drop the logos on to a new background?

I've looked in my small book but it doesn't cut. Another PS would be
what are the best books? The Gimp Manual and Grokking The Gimp?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Under linux at least, there's a plugin named colortoalpha (i dont't know
where in the menu exactly, i believe under Image/Colors, search in the PDB)
that can be good for this.

Banding, eh? I'm on 24 bit. Always have been and just ran a check, still
am... Even hough I have an 8MB card, I can't see to get 32bit whith
the card's VGA server.

I notice the banding doesn't take place if I use the gradient red pipe
plugin. It renders it and all gradients flawless. Just the standard...

Any other thing you can think of s appreciated. It sort of ruins what
I'm doing and so causes massive depression, loss of appetite, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.

Love to. But I can't grab the compiled deb binaries on the Debian site
because they're compiled against sid and that means upgrading a lot of
libraries on my potato system and breaking stuff. The other choice, I
guess, is finding someone who has compiled it against potato, but I
placed a post in Debian and no takers. last choice is compiling it
myself... I don't know if it will work with potato's version of the GTK
dev libraries and so further upgrading is in store..

Any suggestions welcome. I'd love to have it...

BTW I do have a late 1.17 or somthing butw hen it loads it insists on
nstalling, not in the customary .gimp directory, but .gimp-1.117 etc.
directory. Clearly to show it's not done. ANY way to have it default to
.gimp (I tried changing the paths in preferences and no go...).

There is a colour to alpha plugin, IIRC. Sometimes it needs some
manual help, but it is a start.

First, make sure you are not running in 16 bit (you should use 24 bit,
or 32=24+8). Second, check that your monitor is adjusted and not
damaged, it could be a hardware problem. Third, even after some people
say that 24 bit is enough, sometimes is not enough (some people are
more sensible, and some situations push that to the limits).

Compile! Its not hard. Just download the source, unzip it,
./configure, make, su to root, and make install.

It'll let you know during ./configure if you're missing stuff that you
need.

I always compile because I like to know that its built perfectly for my
system.

Debs and RPMS have made people lazy or something... For important
things like the Gimp I compile.

Don't have it, at least on 1.04 which came with potato and I'm trying to
get my hand on something more recent...

Have you an url for it?

BTW, all the plugins I've seen come in source? You have to compile them
all? Any special libraries involved?

Exclusivity with glibc package?

2001-01-12 Thread jeff winter

Dear helpful maintainer, I hope that you can guide me
on my quest to simultaneously run:
 - GIMP/GTK
 - Netscape 6 / glibc+libjpeg

Case 1: I had GIMP and GTK.
Case 2: I tried to install Netscape 6.0, but it
crashed, due to dependencies on glibc and libjpeg,
which I did not have (at least not in correct
version).
Case 3: I downloaded and installed several layers of
dependent *.DEB files with the dpkg GUI.
Case 4: As a result, I successfully installed Netscape
6, but GIMP/GTK were gone.
Case 5: I tried to reload the Gimp package using dpkg,
but it informed me that it would unload MANY packages,
including glibc and libjpeg. ARGHH!

If you can help, or guide me to someone who can,
please let me know.

Window behavior when zooming in ...

2001-01-12 Thread Gunter Vanasse -- ACE Web Engineer

Greetings,

First, let me thank Marc and Garry for their input.

Of course, the replies beg the question ... is there any "reliable" archive for
gimp-user?

I recall GIMP 1.0.4 adjusting the window size (up to a maximum that did not
exceed the size of the desktop) when zooming into an image. GIMP 1.2.0 now zooms
into the image without adjusting the window size. In particular, I thought it
was really convenient if I zoomed a small image to 2x, 3x or 4x that the window
would adjust to the image boundary. Is this a "feature" which can be toggled on?

Thx,
Günter.

Sure,

Select "File/Preferences", "Interface/Image windows", toggle on or off
"Resize windows on Zoom" then click save to save all preferences.

Ciao.

Ok. thanks. I had a thought though. I remmeber the original didn't have
that. Could it be the format I'm saving in, namely jpg? After all, the
problem appears after I've saved it and put it up for background?

What is the best file type to use? And is there a file type that can
keep work in progress? ie Five layers open for editing later?

I'll post this and send another straight to you with the pic.

Thanks again.

Uumm, eeeh... GIF, JPG and many other formats are like working in 16
bit screen. Use PNG if you want compression but keep colors nicely.
This thing is becoming boring (sorry but day after day the lossy
compression thing appears... is there not a FAQ somewhere or what?).

For what task? Desktop bg? Web? Printing? Each job has a tool (or more
than one, but please do not hammer nails with the polisher machine).

Gimp native format is .xcf.bz2, .xcf.gz or .xcf (aka .xcf compressed
or not). IMHO .xcf.bz2 if your machine is fast, .xcf.gz if not, .xcf
if you want to waste HD.

I had not added, as I should have, to work and store the original in so
as to preserve layers, etc. Obviously once finished it has many uses and
flavors.

I'll keep your info on file. First I need to find out what files I need
to compile against potato and then maybe give that a try. In other
words, gimp 1.2 source, extras 1.2 source, and now apparently the gtk
1.2.8 package? Is everything else on potato that I would need? Or do I
need to dl the perl 1.3 package, etc...

Thanks.

If the background color is unique in the image,
you can just do a Select > By Color and cut it.
But you will need to do Layers > Add Alpha Layer

Or, you can add an apt sources line to /etc/apt/sources.list
eg:
deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian sid main contrib non-free

and:

apt-get -b source gimp1.2

This will compile the sid GIMP 1.2 package for you.
You may have to chase down a few libs (and get the -dev packages for them)
