[Gimp-user] Colour swapping advice

2014-12-28 Thread Chris1968
Hi all,

I am planning to build a website over the coming weeks but I want to make some
custom images albeit slightly basic ones. My first image project would be the
banner for the home page for which I already have an image which I will attach
to this post.

It is a simple two colour image of a pentagram. The pentagram is black against a
white background but I want to change the black to a shade of gold maybe and the
background to a shade of black. Rather that editing it pixel by pixel there must
be an easier way by using gimp to alter the pentagram's colour and the
background colour.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Chris

[Gimp-user] GIMP & Torrent

2014-12-28 Thread William Thompson
Appears things have changed with GIMP since I last downloaded and used the
program? Not sure what your relationship is with Torrent, but as I was
instructed to download the latter in order to open the GIMP executable
file, I did so, only to find extraneous and undesired software loaded along
with it -- I declined the visible extra software I didn't want -- which
also included risks according to Norton. Some of this also highjacked my
default search engine, replacing it with something called Vortrane, based
in Tel Aviv?!

Have removed all of Torrent and the other junk that came along with it.
Obviously, won't be using GIMP now or in future.

I found your site today, not knowing it existed. As an option to use
instead of Photoshop, which I do own, I thought trying Gimp, might be
easier to work with. I signed in, got the first attachment page, but it
said I'd get an email to confirm. I never did. I tried to maybe sign in,
but what I got, is the second attachment. Can you help me?

On the first page of http://www.gimp.org/ you have a large download button,
impossible to miss. Don't blame on GIMP your use of a malicious download
site.

Which site did you find? The proper official site is http://www.gimp.org/
and it will not ask you to register.

The issue is apparently to be a bit different - according to a short
mail exchange I had with the author of the initial message, he may have
been bitten by adware in a BitTorrent client (maybe even the
'BitTorrent, Inc.' one, see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_BitTorrent_clients#General )

The user has made a statement along the lines of "What has computing
come to?" and is unwilling to continue the mail exchange, so pursuing
this further is currently futile (i.e. I do not know what exactly he
downloaded and from where).

I have added a short explanatory line to the downloads page's Windows
section (http://testing.gimp.org/downloads/ - note that this adjusts to
the platform you use and shows only matching downloads by default).
The news item on http://www.gimp.org regarding modified installers of
GIMP itself has also been motivated by this mail.

P.S.
It is a bit disconcerting to see that two (or three, if you count Vuze)
GPL-licensed BitTorrent clients employ adware as well. Probably even
more disconcerting is that I have come across opinions that Windows
users are "to expect" or are "used to" or "deserve" adware in installers
these days.

It might be the gimp-user mailing list, but that one seems to work fine.

Another possibility is the gimpusers.com site, which offers a forum that
is linked to the mailing list - in this case, the admins' contact
details are available at http://www.gimpusers.com/site/imprint

Activate the "color select tool" an click the black pentagramm.
Then click on the icon "foreground color" to change to the desired color.
The use the "bucket fill tool" to fill the selected area.
Then click on "Select -> None".
Now you can do do the same on the backgound.
Thats it!

Re: [Gimp-user] GIMP & Torrent

2014-12-28 Thread Mark Morin
Windows users should read each installation step carefully rather than
simply click through. If there is an option for a custom versus standard
installation, custom should always be selected. I can not recall an
instance when I was not given the option to deselect the adware that was
to be installed with the software. It's packaged as a useful ad-one but
all it is, is an additional piece of software that wrecks havoc on your
system (I'm not talking about the ads that pop up within, for example,
Vuse--those can usually be blocked at the firewall level).

[Gimp-user] mpeg with GIMP or GAP

2014-12-28 Thread Marc Nicolardot
Good afternoon,
I woul'd like to convert an animation built with GAP and GIMP (a folder with
500 frames (i.e. 500 numbered .xcf files)) to an MPEG file with a .wav file
(music). I have read in O. Lecarme and K. Delvare french book it shoul'd be
possible, but I don't find the video/Master Videoencoder in the video menu
(page 197 in the book). What coul'd be the problem ?
Note : the animation does work with the Playback function in the video menu.

I never heard of a direct-to-video plugin for Gimp. IMHO your best bet
is to convert your XCF images to PNG using some utility (ImageMagick)
and then to make the video from the PNGs using some other utility
(ffmpeg springs to mind).

This method invariably leads to either pixellated edges or to a faint
rim of the prevoius color. For a proper way to to this see here:

When doing an image from scratch, the basic principle in Gimp it to work
with layers, keeping objects in their own layer (the reste of the layer
being transparent) so that they can be altered at will without impacting
the rest of the image. If the pentagram is in its own layer, then
changing its color is just alpha-locking the layer and bucket-filling it
with the new color (due to alpha-lock, all pixels keep their original
opacity/transparency), and the background color can be changed by simple
bucket-fill.

Can't lay my hands on GIMP to try right now, but could

You might want to try using color to alpha.
Colors > Color to Alpha

To fine tune it you can use the curves tool.

Something like this maybe.
