Ironically, the average price of goods is *not* less at Wal-Mart than at pre-existing stores. I read an article on it a couple years ago -- Wal-Mart specifically marks down the goods that are sold at the local stores, in an attempt to put them out of business, since the chain-owned store can operate at a loss until those stores are gone. Once they're gone, the new Wal-Mart then re-adjusts the prices, often to become even *higher* than they were originally, so the consumer just ends up getting the shaft. Also, next time you walk through your local Wal-Mart, note how the amazing prices are all on the end-caps of the aisles and the attention-grabbing product stands in the middle of the "main" aisles. Once you get deep into the store, you'll find that the average price of a Wal-Mart item is not any better than the average price of an item at any other store. I am a SuSE fan, I used to be 100% Redhat, but SuSE just had that extra
something, I believe Mandrake has the same appeal and I have it installed on
a couple of boxes also.

These are very promising developments for Linux, IMHO; as we all know, the
most daunting aspect of running Linux for most people is the current need
to install and configure it oneself. Preloads from reputable HW makers
will remove that factor, and make it more likely that businesses (HP/IBM)
and home users (WalMart) will be willing to "take the plunge". They also
present Linux on a relatively equal footing with M$'s offerings, which is
a milestone in and of itself.
As a Mandrake devotee, I'm particularly excited about the HP deal ... it
comes at an excellent time, just as the company has announced that they
expect to successfully emerge from the Frech equivalent of Chapter 11 by
the end of the year - the endorsement of the company and its product that
is implicit in the HP contract can only help them in that regard.
