Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
To be clear, I’m not trying to single anyone out but at least in the ‘Chaning’ thread, one other user’s replies that un-threaded for me, twice now, were from Tim Kallmer. Tim, If you’re reading this, please, if you don’t mind, chime in with your client/workflow. Are you also by chance replying via an Android device? If so, that would make a 3-for-3 (Derek, David, Tim) and I’d say a good case for narrowing the issue down. Even with that resolved, the mystery still lies as to why mailman still partially threads the replies correctly but regular mail clients do not, and then why this is suddenly noticeable. Perhaps a late December Android update is the cause? As for the mailman issue, if that software properly threads the replies, I can’t see why them being re-routed to users would be un-threaded. I still think something in mailman is not working right on that count as the messages are coming from mailman - not from the individual users. Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
David, It’s quite all right. I think it was just noticed first that some of your replies were un-threaded. But as I noted also, this isn’t isolated to just you. (and Derek might be on to something with the Android angle) I guess we’ll see if changing Android clients ’solves’ the problem from your end. That will be an interesting test. Certainly, concerning replying to certain messages, rather than just the last one in the thread, I understand completely. I too always hit reply to the message I’m replying to, not just the last one in the list. It makes the conversation more understandable and meaningful. (and easier to follow later) But I don’t think that is what is at play here or even a factor. I think something is partially breaking threads, so that some of your replies appear as separate conversations to the rest of us, but looking at the archive, appear as replies to the original post, rather than replies to down-thread messages. So the archive thinks they still belong together (somewhat) but our clients are disjointing them entirely. It is quite a mystery so far. Thanks for the info. Re: [GNC] gnucash-user Digest, Vol 202, Issue 27
Matthew, One thing that is immediately obvious in your list of files is that there currently is no active data file in the dirctory you have listed. The data file would appears as MAGS Show.gnucash in that listing. All the files you have shown are either backup or log files. MAGS Show.gnucash.20200107155657.gnucash is a backup file created on 7th January 2020 at 15:56:57 and MAGS Show.gnucash.20200107160232.gnucash is a backup file created on 7th January 2020 at 16:02:32 which appears to be the last time you successfully opened GnuCash. I would make a copy of this file and then rename the copy to MAGS Show.gnucash . You should then be able to open that file withiout any problem. The file MAGS Show.gnucash.20200107160232.log should have a record of the transactions you entered/reconciled since 16:02:32. Under the File->Import submenu you will find an entry "Replay GnuCash .log file. If you click on that entry a file selection dialog will come up. If you navigate to that last log file MAGS Show.gnucash.20200107160232.log and open the file and your reconciliation should be replayed into the register. When it has completed either use Save from the toolbar or File->Save from the menu (not File->Save As as that will rename the file with a new name and/or location). It is normally greyed out unless the data has been changed since either opening or the last save but replaying the log file should activate it. With any luck that should fix your problem. If not come back to the mailing list and tell us what happens when you try the above. Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
As the one named offender on this thread, I will note that I access my email from multiple devices, including a Windows laptop, an Android phone, and a Kindle fire. The Yahoo! Mail app on Android would most likely be the culprit, as they seem in a recent update to have disabled "Reply all" for no apparent reason. I've attempted in those cases to paste in the users email address, but I imagine that they are fucking with other aspects as well, not that I really know. I am now trying a different Android client altogether, and perhaps it will function better. As for not replying to the last message on a thread: I purposefully do this when I wish to reply to a comment in a thread which has gone on to discuss other, random topics that have absolutely nothing to do with the original topic. That happens with regularity on this list, and it annoys me. So, I return to the point in the thread to which I wish to reply. "D", the unthreading master. Re: [GNC] Lost Data
Matthew Not sure what is going on. Were you opening using a recent entry in the File Open dialog? If so try navigating explicitly to your data file and opening it explicitly. Before doing so check there are no files with a .LCK extension in the directory with your data file as these will normally block opening the file although that should bring uop a dialog allowing you to override it. Deleting the files with the .LCK extension should not cause any problems as long as you don't have GnuCash open in another instance. They are intended to stop multiple instances of the program from opening the same file at the same time. AFAIK ".LNK" files are Windows created files and shouldn't have any effect on MacOSX or Linux. The report error tends to indicate that GnuCash is trying to open a report. Did you have a report tab open when you last closed the file? Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
Adrien, I just checked, and Outlook appears to be keeping threads organized nicely (when using Conversation mode). Tried it again in a folder containing the list and archive dupe messages, and it grabs all of them to show in each conversation group. But I'm also getting hundreds of dupes (one from the list and one from the list archive). Does anyone have a solution for that? The archive version contains the instruction " If you reply to this email, your message will be added to the discussion below:" But that's wrong, since a reply to that email will always bounce as rejected. ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user If you are using Nabble or Gmane, please see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists for more information. - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. I am also seeing it recently in my GMail client, but it is not every message, or even messages identifiable by any pattern that I can see. [GNC] Lost Data
Gnucash 3.5-1 running on a MacBook Pro under macOS 10.14.6. I’m been using Gnucash for years for very simple accounting, primarily just maintaining a checkbook register. Today I had trouble reconciling a bank statement. After clicking “Finish” the reconciled transactions had a “y” in the appropriate column, but when I tried to quit Gnucash I got a message saying that something hadn’t been saved and asking if I wanted to save it. Sorry to be so vague, but I don’t recall exactly what the message was. When I restarted Gnucash the transactions that were previously reconciled weren’t; they had “n” in place of “y”. I tried to reconcile again, but the next time I started Gnucash and looked at the register I got the message "Report error An error occurred while running the report." I tried opening an earlier version of the data file (NAME.gnucash.string of numbers.gnucash) but got the same error message. I have not deleted anything. I have _.gnucash files, one _.LNK files, _.log files. What went wrong and–more important–how can I get the data back? ___ gnucash-user mailing list gnucash-user@gnucash.org To update your subscription preferences or to unsubscribe: https://lists.gnucash.org/mailman/listinfo/gnucash-user If you are using Nabble or Gmane, please see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists for more information. - Please remember to CC this list on all your replies. Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
Adrien, Also experiencing the same issue when using Evolution as the mail client on Linux Mint. I mainly use the Nabble interface to reply to emails but also have them coming up in my email server (usually not threaded but it is an option) to alert me when new messages are posted and the threads are disassociated . It may be that posts from particular mail clients cause this rather than the receiving client. The list server doesn't seem to recognize the subject and associate it with previous use of the same subject for some reason. Tends to suggest that some users mail clients may be subtly altering the subject content in an unexpected way. Yes. Interesting... So the replies that break threads from a user might be coming from their Android device, (as an example) but their replies that don’t break threads might be coming from a desktop or laptop with a different client. Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
I’m still investigating. I don’t think the e-mail provider is an issue because that isn’t a common denominator for the senders. And it seems people confirming this so far are also on separate providers. I’m banking on either user-caused or perhaps an issue with mailman. I wonder if there was a config change or update to the list server recently. It appears to be happening with more than one user’s replies, but it might all be a result of their reply workflow. (so they coincidentally are following the same pattern that breaks threads) What is odd, is even looking at a single user, it doesn’t always happen. Maybe their workflow is not consistent. Regardless, the subject lines aren’t changed so our clients should not be breaking them up anyway unless the ‘in-reply-to’ header is getting mangled by mailman or the replier’s workflow. I also am curious to try to follow the actual reply-flow in the archive and see if they are broken there as well. (which might indicate a mailman problem) At least for one thread, all replies appear nested in the archive under the original post, but they may not be nested past the first level properly. It is not a list issue; it will be specific users or MUAs causing it. I know that when I responded to mail from my Android phone in the past it would dethread. Re: [GNC] Anyone noticing an issue with list messages 'un-threading'?
Thankfully then, it isn’t my lack of sanity or my mail client. But I don’t think that is the only user this happens for. I’ll have to investigate and then try to find if those users have anything in common. (like using a certain mail provider, but that also doesn’t apply to other users who’s replies thread properly) That ‘Chaning’ thread has a few breaks from at least one other user. And if someone is reporting my own reply breaking thread, then something weird is going on. (I’m just using reply-all to a message like always, though I do so specifically on the message I’m replying to which may already have been in a broken-off part of a thread) I do see ‘D’ appears to frequently reply to the original post (for the ‘Chaning’, thread at least) rather than replies, which might be part of the issue (though it should still thread properly) but I do see one such post from this user that was properly threaded on a different subject. If only my client would let me combine and split conversations at will when they come in wrong. (or are handled by the client improperly) Regards, Adrien > On Jan 7, 2020 w2d7, at 1:23 PM, Frank H. Starting in late December I noticed almost every subject is coming in as separate threads at some point. An initial post is made, then a reply or two appears, then a subsequent reply appears as a separate ‘conversation’, which might have a reply or more, and then it splits off again. For some longer threads, this can happen several times. I’m curious if anyone else is seeing this behavior or if it might just be my mail client acting up. (MacOS Mail.app) This isn’t a case of getting a direct-addressed reply instead of the one from the list. That happens on occasion, but even then Mail.app was threading by subject. Note that if you're using HBCI/FinTS you need GnuCash 3.8 and the latest AQBanking and Gwenhywfar betas, if OFX you need AQBanking 5.8.x and Gwen 4.20.x and GnuCash version doesn't matter. Re: [GNC] How to Handle Managed Securities Accounts in GnuCash
There used to be a section in one of the help manuals about tracking the value of fixed investments such as art. I am not near my computer so I am working from memory. You could create such an asset for that account and then update it's value quarterly or less as you please, following the statements you receive. Obviously, this would not provide tax information, but you are probably already using the tax info from your investment manager.
