And one which has a simple answer: The time to sell is when you see the first picture of people standing in line, outside a US bank, waiting to buy gold. That is when you know that there is a real bubble, one waiting to burst. The most recent bubble was the one in California where people with no jobs, income nor assets could get a loan to buy a $400,000 house. Surely, that was a screaming exit point for those already with real estate investments? Re: [Goanet] What would you be willing to give your life for?
Dear Marshall, I understand well that you have stated that Jesus would be today "branded a naxalite" by people who do not know the difference. Even Fr.Cedric Prakash, who is struggling for the human rights of the Dalits, has been labelled a "politician", "communist", "naxalite"... As you have well expounded, there is difference between "being a naxalite" and "being a Christian, as a transforming 'leaven' or a 'Christian revolutionary'". We have to remember the teaching of the Gospel and of the Church throughout the history. I think that you have explained it clearly. Often (useless) controversy is triggered when our statements are not well understood or are distorted... It should be clear that: 1. Theology of liberation has roots in the Gospel sayings (cf.Lk 4:16-21). That was the 'social manifesto' of Jesus himself. 2. Theology of liberation took its systematic form in Latin America. It was already at work in the evangelizing mission of Barnabe de las Casas. 3. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in his interview with Vittorio Messori, The Ratzinger Report, has given a criticism of some forms of theology of liberation, which approve of violence, Marxist ideology ( which is atheistic, and therefore is not acceptable to a Christian), class struggle, the myth of classless society... It is liberation from sin and from all its consequences, both individual and societal. 4. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was the Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and one of the authors of the document "INSTRUCTION ON CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE "THEOLOGY OF LIBERATION", approved by John Paul II, where the Church accepts the expression and the nucleus of the theology: solidarity with the poor, preferential option of the poor, love of neighbour, denunciation of injustice and sin. It criticises some forms of extremist theologies, unacceptable by Gospel criteria. Gustavo Guttierrez, the Dominican Peruvian theologian, who studied medicine and then literature, philosophy in Leuven and theology in Lyons, and worked in a parish among the poor of Peru (Lima) as a priest, ad then taught in the University of Peru, has given clear systematic insights of theology of liberation in his book, A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, Salvation (in 1971). 5. In the Magisterium of the Church we have the following steps: a)Synods of Bishops in 1971 and 1974; after the 1974 synod, Pope Paul VI drafted the apostolic exhortation "Evangelii Nuntiandi" on the basis of the conclusions of the meeting: the relationship between evangelization and liberation (nn.25-39). b)Second Assembly of the Latin-American Bishops (CELAM) in Medellin, Colombia, in 1968 and Third Assembly in Puebla, Mexico in October 1978; 6. In Asia we have theologians of liberation: Tissa Balasurya, Aloysius Pieris, George Soares-Prabhu, Sebastian Kappen, Samuel Rayan, Jacob Kavunkal, Felix Wilfred, Kim Chung-Choon wrote extensively on Asian theology of liberation. 7. The Christians have to work together with other religions: Rabindranath Tagore wrote: "This is my prayer to thee, my Lord — strike at the root of penury in my heart: Give me the strength never to disown the poor or bend my knee before insolent might". "Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi derived inspiration from the Bhagavadgita for political action against the colonial rulers, as a religious deed. Active nonviolence for Gandhi was Satyagraha — the fight for truth. Gandhi advocated a return to the pristine past of Rama Rajya, the rule of a mythical hero, Rama, who symbolized justice, peace and equality. For this, on the one hand, he had to unite the Indians who were divided by the colonial policy of "divide and rule" and, on the other had to dissipate the Indian masses’ fear of the State violence, which in turn had reduced all Indians to submission. This he accomplished through the civil disobedience movement, with the inspiration of the Bhagavadgita Asian religions too advocated the liberation of humans, the Buddhist nirvana being a classic example, not to speak of the liberational elements of the Bhakti traditions in India. Hence, Asian liberation theologians advocate collaboration with other Asian religions in effecting the liberation of the poor of Asia as a common mission" (See the article of Jacob Kavunkal, "The Impact of Medellin and Puebla on Asian Theology (3 February 2000) in: http://www.sedos.org/english/kavunkal.htm). Regards. Fr.Ivo From the Instruction on Theology of Liberation: "The Gospel of Jesus Christ is a message of freedom and a force for liberation. In recent years, this essential truth has become the object of reflection for theologians, with a new kind of attention which is itself full of promise". "Liberation is first and foremost liberation from the radical slavery of sin. Its end and its goal is the freedom of the children of God, which is the gift of grace. As a logical consequence, it calls for freedom from many different kind
[Goanet] Goan Stars to perform at Doha Qatar
Goan Stars to perform at Doha Qatar By Gasper Crasto - for www.goa-world.com ; http://gaspersworld.blogspot.com/ Kuwait: Kuwait's young musician Maestro Shahu Almeida will provide live music at the annual mega Konkani musical show at Doha Qatar organized by the Goan Cultural Group. The unique style musical to be held at Gulf Cinema, Doha, will present celebrated singers from Goa such as Xavier Gomes, Francis de Tuvem, Marcus Vaz, Lawry Travasso, Mario Menezes, Rosy Alvares, etc. Topmost comedians of the Konkani stage Ben Evangelisto, Sally and Joanna are also invited to add spice to the night. The highlight of the show is going to be a 'creative' opening chorus, according to the organizers Mr. Maurice Pereira and Paul Fernandes of the Goan Cultural Group. Kuwait's trio singers Mario de Majorda, Cajetan de Sanvordem and Michael D'Silva will add color to the evening with their 'best of the bests' hits. Stage great Mario de Majorda: Mario Fernandes, popularly known as Mario de Majorda is one of the established stalwarts of Konkani Stage. Mario started as a singer at a young age of 13 in 'Somdir ani Lharam' of Felly Lucas and later sang in Jeoffrey de Majorda's 'To Monis Konn'. Born to Antonette Severina Fernandes and John Fernandes, Mario comes from the beautiful coastal village of Calata-Majorda, Goa. He came to Kuwait in 1983 and has been active ever since on stage and other activities. Initially, Mario was able to pursue his great enthusiasm for acting by helping out in the Holy Family Cathedral's Parents Day programs wherein he used to write, direct, act, compose and also sing songs. He is currently the In-charge of the choir. His presence and works in Kuwait-Goa Tiatristhanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) and Goan Welfare Society (GWS) are hugely noticeable among the Indian community. Cajetan Pereira - a flamboyant singer: Kala Academy Award winner for Best Actor and Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Best Singer Award winner Cajetan Pereira is popularly known as Cajetan de Sanvordem. Born to Jose Salvador and Maria Magdalena Pereira at Sanvordem-Goa, Cajetan first came into spotlight when he was just 8 years of age whilst singing in school and village dramas. Besides acting and singing Cajetan is a public figure in social activities. Time and again, he has been elected to several Indian organizations. He is the President of United Friends Club - a football association and the Ex-President of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha (KGTS). He is also the President of Guardian Angel Club of Sanvordem (Kuwait), Head of Cultural Cell of Goan Welfare Society (GWS) since inception, and an active member of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF). Apart from being a flamboyant actor, Cajetan is also a versatile compere. His voice, diction, flair and linguistic abilities, especially with his mother-tongue Konkani makes his presence felt vibrantly at Goan cultural programs and social gatherings. He is also good in penning slogans in Konkani. Cajetan's cursive 'handwriting' skill should be seen to be believed and his sense of humor heard to understand the simplicity of life. Michael D'Silva - one of Kuwait's most popular singer: Michael D'Silva has been performing on stage in Kuwait since 1994. Known for his poetical compositions, Michael has been on Kuwait's centre stage since his debut in Mario de Majorda's drama 'Sambau'. Maestro Shahu - A shining star across the shores: Amongst the contemporary big names of musicians, the name of Francis Almeida, popularly known as Shahu shines amongst the stellar bracket of Goa's top-notch musicians with his indispensable contribution towards the art. Shahu may be recognized more in the genre of dramas. But behind his simplicity, is the unmistakable halo of his talent as a star musician of Goan bands. With his past penchant and passion for innovative, brilliant music, Shahu continues on what he loves to do best - hypnotize his listeners to a magical sway. In his latest performance, Shahu captivated the audience at the Kuwait Goa Tiatristhanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) Konkani musical entitled 'Tiatristponn Devachem Dennem' held recently at Hawally AC Auditorium. He led a group of musicians orchestrating on his favorite keyboards as well as the saxophone. With his ability to play different instruments, Shahu also leads a band in Kuwait called 2..S#arp. With 2..S#arp, Shahu's music spans a broad range of harmonies, from Goan and foreign-inspired music to more modern trends with mixtures of genres and ethnic elements. The group is quite popular among Goans, they have even played alongside Goa's topmost band Forefront and many other local bands. Few however know that Shahu, a dynamic talent with his keyboard, began his tryst with music drumming his way into the hearts of his school-mates at his school's Annual Gatherings, propelling him into the musical horizon forever. He is the alumnus of St. Francis Xavier H. Schoo

[Goanet] Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award conferred on Victor Hugo Gomes
Conferred on Victor Hugo Gomes in recognition of his prodigious commitment to conserve and showcase Goa's ethnographic heritage for posterity's benefit and realization. A graduate of Fine Arts and former curator of the Christian Art Museum, Victor Hugo Gomes has spent almost half his lifetime hand-picking artifacts which represent Goa's traditional and agrarian life style. There are currently some 4000 artifacts of a bygone era on display at the Goa Chitra Museum (founded and curated by Mr. Gomez). The collection includes - among other astonishing collectibles - pottery, farming tools, musical instruments, ancient carts and palanquins. Goa Chitra also showcases an organic farm for the cultivation of various vegetables, herbs, spices, sugarcane, and rice - all staples of the area. The fertiliser and pesticides utilised are made from farm waste, using traditional techniques. And rather ingeniously, human waste from the living quarters is also converted to bio-gas, and together with solar power, provides the energy needs of the farm. Goa Chitra is a monumental testament to one man's quest to preserve Goa's anachronous agrarian technology and lifestyle. [Goanet] Goan Music Company Creating History In The International Music Scene
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *The Annual W.O.A Records India Tour Creating Waves Worldwide * Goa, India - 5th Nov, 2009 - After the successful W.O.A Records India Tour shows at Ravindhra Bhavan Goa on the 31st of October, Bangalore on the 1st and 2nd of November and Bogmallo Beach on the 4th of November the artists of the W.O.A Records India Tour 2009 are now all set to perform and enthrall music lovers in Pune and Mumbai on the 6th and 7th of November. The unprecedented success of the W.O.A Records Annual International music tour is creating waves across the world where the story has hit the music industry of how a record label from Goa is changing the face of International music in India by bringing some of the worlds finest International breaking bands to India every year. W.O.A International started off a decade ago and is now India's largest International Independent music label which was founded by the music world's hot rocker and International musician Oliver Sean who hails from Goa and who has single handedly managed to conceptualize and fund the entire W.O.A Records India Tour for the past two years with the belief that Goa is the capital of International music in India and the strong belief that Independent artists can reach dizzying heights with the right support. This belief has now led to every top International Indie band wanting to sign on to the Goan Company W.O.A International. "When I formed W.O.A International it was for the sole purpose of supporting great musicians who believe in themselves and who don't change their style for anyone and the idea of the W.O.A Records India Tour has been with me for years and started becoming a reality when I saw that we were leading up to becoming the largest International Independent Music label due to the number of fantastic artists that we were signing" says W.O.A International Founder and Rocker Oliver Sean, "due to the artists not being major stars we didn't really get any support from sponsors monetarily however we decided to throw caution to the wind last year and bring a number of artists down together who play different styles of music and promote them with a proper international tour setting because I have always believed that an artist has to tour and thats the only way to grow and at the same time I wanted music lovers in India to experience good International music the way it should be heard and thats hearing and watching it Live on stage". Independent Music as a concept was brought about and promoted in India in a major way by W.O.A International. It was due to W.O.A's strong network in the music industry in India that led the Independent artists signed to W.O.A Records to be promoted alongside major acts thus blurring lines between the majors and the indies. This in turn has brought about a change in the International music scene in India where music lovers in India are being introduced to fantastic artists from all over the world who are brought down here to India by W.O.A International and who are being promoted with full backing in form of record releases, video airplay on major channels, radio promotions which would otherwise be unreachable for an Independent artist to come about on his or her own. The W.O.A Records India Tour 2009 is the second tour of a series of annual India tours being organized by W.O.A International and with the quality of artists that are being brought down by W.O.A the tours have started attracting a lot of music lovers to these shows across the country and interest from around to the world is growing in a Goan Company that has made history in music armed only with their belief in supporting good music and investing all their time, effort and money into artists and musicians they believe in. The scale and size of the W.O.A Records India Tour is growing every year, with this year's tour being bigger than last year it has led to the Government of Goa coming in to back W.O.A International in their work towards supporting and promoting International music and making Goa the International Music capital of India. With the scheduled 2010 tour the true Independent music revolution in India has begun and history in music is being made in this part of the world. ABOUT W.O.A INTERNATIONAL W.O.A Records is an international record label, and it is part of the W.O.A International media group. [Goanet] Gulf Goan-- speech by Simon D'Silva at the G lobal Goan Convention in Oman
GLOBAL GOAN CONVENTION 2009 5-6 NOVEMBER 2009, MUSCAT THE GULF GOANS By Simon D’Silva We are the world wanderers, coming home to rebuild, the promised dream in the heart of peace, under the coconut tree, wrote Goa’s renowned poet Dr. Manohar Rai SarDessai. His Excellency Mr. Anil Wadhwa, Indian Ambassador to Oman, Honourable NRI Commissioner Mr. Eduardo Faleiro, MLA Agnelo Fernandes, distinguished guests, dignitaries on and off the dias, ladies and gentlemen. We observe today a celebration of liberation. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that liberation. A new generation - disciplined by hard work, proud of our ancient heritage and committed today at home and around the world. That takes me down the memory lane. Golden Goa abounds in diamonds and minerals that was a song which we regularly used to hear during our childhood days on All India Radio. Yes, Goa is full of minerals but surprisingly we did not come across any mining companies striking it rich with Diamonds. After a closer introspection what I discovered was stunning. The diamonds had long being found in Goa and had been exported to different parts of the world for many generations. The diamonds are you and me, exported as human resources to different parts of the world. Some have become permanent residents of different countries contributing to the economic growth for their adopted countries and continue to maintain their links with their homeland. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich. The topic of the current convention is the Gulf Goan and I wish to dwell, on Goans in the Gulf, yet another diamond exported to GCC countries. He or she cannot become a permanent resident of any of the GCC countries on account of the laws of the land. Like in Goa, where mining resources will diminish one day, the same fate has in store for GCC countries, whose economical boom is centered on the Oil Industry. The economic doom that the world is witnessing now has affected many a Gulf Goan in this part of the world. The worst hit accordingly are the Goans in Dubai. United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do. And to quote John F. Kennedy - ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. Here, my fellow Goans are saying to the government, I contributed to your growth by contributing my share to the foreign resources by toiling hard in this region and now it is time for the country to help me. We read that on August 4 Labour Minister Joaquim Alemao while replying to a discussion on demands for grants to the Labour & Employment Department and Employee State Insurance (ESI), in the Goa assembly, had proposed to set up a cell for monitoring workers of Goan origin who have returned to the State from overseas countries due to global economic meltdown, in coordination with the Commissioner of NRI Affairs. We welcome the measure, and wish to know more about the path setting proposal, with Goa being the only state to take the issue of retrenchment of workers with all its seriousness. If any welfare schemes are introduced by the Goa government for retrenched NRI workers then it is just a short-term solution to keep the Goans tied up to their homeland. We need long term solutions, to provide employment to our educated unemployed of the state. We also welcome the government’s move to establish model overseas workers resource centres in Panjim and Margao to facilitate employment opportunities for Goans in Gulf countries and rest of the world, going by the statement made by our Honorable minister Joaquim Alemao in the assembly. So let us begin a new. Let’s explore what problems unite us instead of belabouring those problems which divide us. It has been noticed that the state is struggling to raise its resources during the current financial year, with a fall in revenue from Tourism and mining. Migration is always a difficult task for the first generation migrants, say many of my Europe-based Goa born friends. The question that immediately springs up is why successive governments in Goa have not been able to keep the large number of young migrating population tied up to the land. Goa’s strength lies in its human resources and government should formulate a policy to tap the talent. Let all know every other power that Goa intends to remain the master of its own house to begin a new quest for a new vibrant Goa, before the dark powers of destruction engulf us all in planned or accidental self-destruction. Coming to the educational field in Goa we owe our gratitude to our teachers and the educational system for what we are. But, we were not ready to take up the challenges of the corporate world with the education we got back home in Goa. Some links were missing and we are proud to say we found them here. So, please remodel our education system to the tune of the times. So that the new generation want a perf

Albert writes:- There were two sacrulas in Saligao, One used to dress as a franscian priest and other used to sell meat in the tinto. Sacrula is the short form of sacra familia meaning holy family. The first sacro never came from rich family and never went to the seminary. He was not mad before. He became one when he found that his house was auctioned in the court and he was nto given his share. He became a desperate man and those who write about him like Eric pinto, Joao Pereira should have shown that they were true christian and helped him to become normal by putting him in the mental hospital. They did not do that so why do they talk about him ? He died as a poor man. he never preached. He just spoke to people like the politicians do. Joao does not have authority to call me or Freddy mad or compare us to any insane person. God has not given you the authority. Any one can become mad at any time including you. Are you safe that you cannot lend in mental hospital and if you do, do you think any priest or catholics whom you support will come to your aid? Just because you have a computer and internet and sitting may be on an important seat does not give you power to condem others. I may be from saligao and I may come from mental hospital myself for which I will not be ashamed because our brains are monitored by God and when the brain fails you are mad. You yourself can meet with an accident and become an insane man. What will you do if I laugh at you ? If tomorrow your son becomes mad, will you compare him to me and say albert has become like my son? you will want the world to pray for him and sympathize with him. Familiar venom, to those who live in the West. The lay 'roamers' there are on the payroll of some pretty undesireable groups. The onus is on Albert to prove his bonafides. A suggestion: that he become familiar with the idiom he presumes to employ when he 'preaches.' eric. From: Albert Desouza

[Goanet] Gold Rush !!
India's purchase of the gold is a commendable stratrategic move. It is a pity that India is exporting Iron Ore to China instead of using it for India's own manufacturing industries or holding it in reserve for when it is needed. Here again our politicians are at it. "Personal enrichment at whatever cost" as observed in Orisa and other states where forced land acquisitions and displacement of populations is carried out with brutal force in the guise of ridding India of terrorist Insurgents. Who are these insurgents? The poorest of the poor People who have lived on these lands from time immemorial who will not benefit in the least from these mining activities. [Goanet] climate change to hit goa
Climate change will hit Goa hard: study HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, NOV 5 Goa is the most vulnerable among coastal states, as major portion of its beaches would be submerged within a foreseeable future due to climatic changes, according to a scientific study. ‘Environmental Education and Sustainable Development in the New Millennium’, a book released by Dr Desh Bandhu, president, Indian Environment Society on the occasion of “VIII Global Conference on Environmental Education 2009” says that Goa being a State with shortest coastline, is more prone to sea level rise due to global warming and climatic change. Around 4.3 per cent of Goa’s a 105-km coastline has already been affected by one meter rise in sea level, an article in the book on ‘Global Warming and Climatic Change’ claims. The article also reads that till date 7.3 per cent of Goa’s coastal population is affected by beach erosion which is also very high compared to other States. “By 2050 and 2080 if the sea level would rise by 38 and 59 meters respectively, then Goa would lose maximum percentage of its land and its population,” the article reads. The article further says that Goa being dependent much more directly on climate can be hit much harder and sudden by large climatic change. According to data presented in the state legislative assembly during the recent monsoon session, more than 10 per cent of the State’s beaches have already been eroded due to global warming and the consequent rise in sea water levels. The state tourist authority has expressed concern and said it is working with scientists to shore up beaches so that they are not lost to the Arabian Sea. Goa based environmental scientists have said the destruction of mangroves and salt pans, plus sand mining and construction for tourism have exacerbated the problems. The article also says that other then Goa, West Bengal is a State where beach erosion has affected to a large extent. “Of its total 8.3 million hectares coastal area nearly 1.4 per cent is affected thus harming 2.3 per cent of its population,” article says. However, Maharashtra with highest coastal area of 30.8 million hectares, only 0.13 per cent of its area is under beach erosion harming 1.7 per cent of its population. It also states that Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are the least affected states where 0.6 and 0.9 per cent of its coastal area people were affected by rise in sea level. As per the article on an average 0.4 per cent of India’s coastal area was affected by the rise of one meter sea level which affected 1.7 per cent of its total coastal population
