[Goanet] Cyprian Fernandes against Selma Carvalho (Response to Eddie Fernandes by Rose Fernandes)
Dear Eddie I too echo what others have written on goanet, this matter was well and truly closed. Selma had written an article on the Goan Festival 2012 which was published in the OHeraldo in Goa, a number of readers took issue at what she had written about our community from East Africa and this gauntlet was taken up by Cyprian from Australia who, with a fully loaded gold tip parker pen (with ink to spare) gave her a justifiable slap on her writer's wrist. In a rare display of humility, Selma apologised, we all breathed a sigh of relief and therein the matter closed. She then bade us all a fond farewell from goanet, but she bades us so many fond farewells, that we have all developed a great fondness for her in our hearts. In your goanet posting, you have written that she has been sitting in the National Archives for long hours doing her research, I have to ask did our community live in the National Archives or did they live in East Africa? The story of our lives there is in the streets, the churches, the club houses, the sports grounds, the beaches, the schools, the colonial offices, the private companies, the railways, and in the hearts and minds of those who lived there, not in the National Archives, we are not some lost tribe yet. You have also reminded us for the past one year, she has been travelling relentlessly the length and breadth of London to record these stories, recruit interviewees, transcribe, edit and produce videos. Let me take this opportunity to refresh your memory, how you announced with great pride of huge interest shown in every training session that it was fully booked even before it was advertised. There were 20 dedicated volunteers that took training on 29 October 2011 and 15 dedicated volunteers that took training on 26 November 2011 both sessions at the Indian YMCA in London, all were trained on how to handle video and audio equipment and interviewing techniques, as shown on http://www.britishgoanproject.com/event/ Did these dedicated volunteers pass or fail their training? Or were these training sessions a tick box exercise as part of the grant requirements? Could you advise us why you now feel that we should be giving a thank you vote to Miss Lonesome when she would have had enough trained-up, dedicated volunteers to assist her with this project? Like a mystery move on undir papa's game board, it is incredulous that you have resurrected this matter on goanet. As editor of Goan Voice and PR Director of The Histories of British Goans Project, you will be familiar with these types of clashes which have a tendency to die down after a while. In my opinion, the behaviour of my best friend mirrors a child standing on a pram because all her favourite toys have been thrown on the floor. Rather than an adult continually picking them up, in time this child will need to learn she has to pick the toys up by herself without any assistance. Re: [Goanet] Cyprian Fernandes against Selma Carvalho (Response to Eddie Fernandes by Rose Fernandes)
Dear Rose, You are right to question the resurrection of the doddery issue even though your path is replete with thorns! I too thought that this was dead and buried until on 13th Sep I received a message from Cyprian which was also sent out to about 100 other addresses and consisted of responses he had received supporting his position. This message started off with a Dear Eddie… I replied to the 100 email addresses indicating why I thought his action was in poor taste considering that an apology had been made. I was completely thrown by a message that came back to me via GoaNet on 16th Sep. accusing me of being distasteful in having revived the issue! I therefore examined Cyprian’s mailing list and goanet was indeed one of the 100 names on the list. However, though Cyprian had obviously meant his message to go on to GoaNet, it did not do so, presumably running foul of the rule that does not allow cross-posting. But when I replied to Cyprian’s list, mine got forwarded by GoaNet, presumably because of the reputation I have acquired over the years of not being able to do wrong :-) Thank you for your interest in our Oral History Project. I wonder what you thought of the documentary released last week. Eddie Fernandes
[Goanet] Curved country tiles
Hi, I'm wondering if the curved country tiles that were used in old Goan houses (specially in the humbler dwellings) are available for purchase in Goa. Any pointers would be appreciated. I'm not looking for the newer variation of the tiles currently available in the market. Thanks, Fred
[Goanet] Schools in Chinchinim during Portuguese era
Schools In Chinchinim Village during Portuguese Era The only avenues then were free Potuguese Education in Primary schools There was one at Chinchinim, another at Baida and during last 2 years of Potuguese rule another school was opened at Deussua, Some informal , early , preparatory Education was imparted by the Church also in Portuguese, by the Mestre of the church. Those who could afford went to Loyola and Fatima in Margao. Others, mostly the rich ,sought refuse in seminaries. Guardian Angel High school at Sanvordem, Monte de Gurim, st Anthony`s Duler, Mapusa and St Paul`s Belgaum are some of the English Medium schools patronised by the Villagers. At Chinchinim, the only English Medium paid school was Don Boscos High school, as it was later rechristened and founded by Prof C.A Gomes, where many completed their matriculation Fr Floriano Gomes, started his private school in Portuguese at his residence. The Govt Primary school taught up to Permeiro and Secundo Grau in Portuguese language( equivalent to Std V to day). Prof. Sebastiao Furtado , Alleamvado, taught at Dramapur, He had a boarding at Alleamvado , and marched students early in the morning and brought them back in the evening from the Govt primary School . Prof. Octaviano DCosta, had his boarding at Bamado, then at Sucaldem. Prof, Arsenio De Mello had boarding at II Palvem, which was popular for its strict discipline, Then Prof, Nazarino Rodrigues started a boarding at Dandeavado and Prof. Leboiano Mendes too had a boarding at Dandeavado, These early educators where very much in demand and filled the void by tutoring , preparing the students of common people at their boarding schools The parents then were not literate to teach their wards in Portuguese Language. These tutors sent them to regular Govt primary school at Chinchiniml in the Morning and then coached them at the boarding premises. Sometimes they also prepared private students and sent them for the examination only at the Govt schools The Chinchinim and surrounding villages, who had their education here through these boarding schools fondly remember Fr Floriano Gomes, Prof. Sebastiao Furtado,Prof Octaviano DCosta, Prof. Nazarino Rodrigues, Prof Leboiano Mendes and Prof. C. A. Gomes. We pay our tribute to the memory of these early pioneers and flag bearers of Education in the Village of Chinchinim and recount their in valuable contribution. May their souls rest in peace Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

[Goanet] tiatr
I have seen lot of tiatrs in bombay as we lived in Dobhitalao . Today the modern tiatrs do not interest me that much though my hubby loves to see. Tiatr academy should bring out tiatr in its name. They should invite one or two people to write tiatrs and a few to edit the same. Appoint a set of musicians to compose and teach artist music. One or two to direct the tiatr. Some one to set a modern stage etc . In this case our tiatrs will compete with marathi dramas. i hope someone is listening to me

[Goanet] Leo D'Mello's Fuller Life program for S Goa Teaching Faculty
Dears, A much needed Faculty Enrichment Workshop was held for for 120 teaching faculty from the South Goa schools. The workshop was organized jointly by Loyola High School, Margao, and the Academy of Self-Actualization. Fr. William Rodrigues SJ [Fr. Willy to most persons who know him, has been the Assistant Headmaster of St. Britto HS, Mapusa, before his current assignment at Loyola HS, Margao]. It has been my privilege to be associated with the launch of the Fuller Life programme in mid 2007 at the hands of the Governor of Goa and the then Minister for Education, Mr. Luizinho Faleiro, at Leonora's Albert Hall, Verna. Obviously, I look forward to Mr. Leo D'Mello, conducting such a workshop in North Goa and would be happy to request the Britto's Old Boys' Association to help the only other Jesuit school in Goa, St. Britto HS, to facilitate such a workshop. The other version of I have come to give you Fuller Life is I have come to give you Life, life in all its abundance. It is nice to know that one school managed by the Society of Jesus has helped to take this message to 120 school teachers. As they say, one good turn deserves another and Alina de Souza e Saldanha is a former teacher, Headmistress and a Mhapxemkarn [resident of Mapusa] by birth and schooling!! Mog asundi Miguel --- Forest Minister Alina Saldanha inaugurates Fuller Life Program for South Goa teaching faculty Forest Minister Mrs. Alina Saldanha inaugurated the Faculty enrichment Workshop called the Fuller Life Program for the teaching faculty of South Goa, at Ravindra Bhavan recently. Present for the inaugural function were Fr. William Rodrigues, Headmaster, Loyola High School, Fr. Avinash Rebello, Parish Priest of Holy Spirit Church, Margao, Mr. Honarato Velho, Past Principal and educationist, Dr. Carmo Gracias, eminent gynaecologist and Mr. Leo D'Mello, Workshop Facilitator and Director of Academy of Self-Actualization. A total of 120 teaching faculty from the South Goa schools participated in the workshop, which was organized jointly by Loyola High School, Margao and the Academy of Self-Actualization. In her address, Mrs. Alina Saldanha touched and charmed the hearts of one and all with her personal testimony, her simplicity of life and her great love for the teaching profession. It was stated that she may be the Minister for Forests, Mines and Environment but she was indeed 'a teacher at heart'. She expressed a desire to be associated with the Academy of Self-Actualization in any shape or form to enrich the teachers, with skill, motivational and support workshops. She reminisced how her late husband, Mathany had helped her find fulfillment in life and working with him made her feel a self-actualized person. Earlier, Dr. Carmo Gracias kept the audience in splits with his welcome address, while Fr. Avinash Rebello and Mr. Honarato Velho impressed on the audience the need to keep the student at the forefront and centre of all their focus, love and direction. The teachers were exhorted to continually update and upgrade themselves to keep on par with the latest developments in science, technology and education. Fr William Rodrigues proposed the Vote of Thanks. Later the day long workshop took on the form of a roller coaster ride with multi media presentations, humorous anecdotes and thought provoking insights into Breathing, Brain, Meditation, NLP, better communication skills and a challenge to the teachers - the child is a clay in your hands, mould them into value-filled, humane and educated citizens of tomorrow.
