[Goanet] Me And Bobby McGee

2021-09-16 Thread Roland Francis
A Country and Western gypsy style classic written by Kris Kristofferson and
Freddie Foster, it tells of a travelling duo of a man and his retarded woman
friend called Bobby McGee. At last tiring of her, he leaves her by the roadside
one night and she dies.

The song is about freedom of the road but also about never being free. The
Janis Joplin version recorded a few days before she died became an all-time hit
posthumously, but I prefer the Reba McEntire version which is linked below the
recording by Nashville’s male royalty.

Dedicated to Eric the Ace of Alms and Vithal, the Viscount of Texan Oil.

Re: [Goanet] The Camels Are On The Horizon - Part II

2021-09-16 Thread Roland Francis
The founder of modern-day Dubai, Sheikh Rashid, was once asked about the future
of his country and he replied:
“My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I ride a Mercedes, my son
rides a Land Rover and my grandson will ride a Land Rover, but my great
grandson will have to ride a camel again.”
Why is that he was asked and his reply was:
“Hard times create strong men, strong men create easy times. Easy times create
weak men, weak men create difficult times. Many will not understand it, but you
have to raise warriors not parasites.”

Add to that the historical reality that all great empires - the Egyptian, the
Persian, the Trojan, the Greek, the Roman, the Ottoman and in later years the
British - all rose and perished within 240 years. They were not conquered by
external enemies; they rather rotted from within.

America too has that mark. The rot is starting to be visible and accelerating.
It is passing the Mercedes and the Land Rover years. The Camels are on the
horizon.

I admire Frederick Noronha´s talent in investigative journalism in always
trying to find new topics which might be of interest to participants of
this Forum. His article on Mr. Braganza in GD Vol 16 Issue 499 rekindled
my interest in this topic. I was a stamp, portcards, aerogrammes, first day
cover collector of Goa in my youth. It helped me to make some pocket money
in my adolescence by trading with other collectors in Goa and abroad. I had
to stop this activity when I entered Escola Medica. But I still kept part
of my collection. Frederick´s posting might help me in deciphering a
related topic on learning a little history of Medical Doctors from Aldona,
the birthplace of my maternal grandfather Antonio Pantaleão Ferrão.
Attached to this mail is a postcard posted from London(6/9/1916) by a
Medical Doctor Lobo trying to go into surgery writing to Fr .Fellipe José

this doctor was related to Dr.Filipe Lobo of Aldona active practitioner in

[Goanet] The Camels Are On The Horizon

2021-09-16 Thread Roland Francis
The late Sheikh Rashid of Dubai, father of the present ruler was a wise and
kind man. He was a coastal dwelling ruler unlike his contemporary, the late
Sheikh Zayed another kind and neighbouring ruler, the Emir of Abu Dhabi who was
more of a Bedouin, a desert roving Arab more at home in a tent on the sands
than in a mud palace like Rashid.

Both were hard on the outside. Rashid was a wily businessman who befriended the
Indians with whom he dealt and who were necessary to his sustenance before the
days of wealth. Zayed on the other hand dealt more with his tribesmen since he
was a hunter and warrior and therefore tough in exterior. Both came from
harshness and poverty and migrated to wealth carefully and easily, without
ostentation. Not so their children.

Sheikh Rashid is supposed to have said this when alive.

[Goanet] The Bandra Feast Of Yore

2021-09-16 Thread Roland Francis
The is the excerpt of Edwin Fernandes’ book “Beyond Bandra” which he meant to
include in his recent post.

September means it's that special time of the year again, the birthday of
"Saibini Mai" of the Mount in Bandra, celebrated as the Bandra Feast. This is
also the time to get nostalgic of days gone by when the Bandra Feast an
eight-day affair(Sunday to Sunday), was truly a family celebration, planned
with a meticulousness and fastidiousness of a military campaign. The only time
when the GEMs i.e Goans, East Indians and Mangaloreans forgot their differences
and behaved like – true gems!

We were privileged to be living in a very vantage location on Hill Road, right
at the foot of the Mount. The annual preparations began with the Novena (9 days
of devotion). In our school days, we made the Novena at St. Andrew's Church,
just across the road. In those days of sparse traffic (no Mahim-Bandra
Reclamation then), we could cross the road without any fear of being run over.
But believe me attending the 0630AM Mass every morning for nine days was quite
taxing on the young masses. I guess the get together promised to all those who
completed the Novena, was no small incentive! The project in charge was Msgr
George Fernandes, a martinet with a heart of gold. He insisted that we come to
church with an offering of flowers; for which we were given daily numbered
coupons. Those who collected all nine coupons were entitled to attend a get
together. Needless to say, to keep the supply chain of floral offerings going,
the gardens of our neighbours, were ruthlessly stripped of flowers especially
the colourful phlox that were in bloom in that season, every night! Those who
got caught, were treated to some very flowery language! Since the pilfered
flowers were offered in Church, we never suffered any pangs of a guilty
conscience for committing the nocturnal robbery. Life those days was so
uncomplicated.

As we grew up, we graduated to trudging up the Mount for the Novena. I remember
lots of buses emblazoned with names like Ave Maria, Stella Maris, Queen of May
and so on, full of office goers, singing hymns. They came from Dadar, Mazagaon,
Girgaum- Kotachiwadi, Dhobi Talao, Colaba. Those days masses were held in the
main Basilica and not in the gargantuan shamiana that is erected in the tarred
compound, of today.

At home, Mummy, Dad and my sisters were here there and everywhere, moving at a
frenetic pace to get everything ship shape for the big day. Our cousins from
Byculla and Mazagaon who were permanent invitees for the festivities,
invariably trooped in on the preceding Friday night. In all, there were not
less than 20 inmates at our place. You can imagine the confusion and bedlam
prevailing, enough to drive any sane person around the bend. Fortunately, those
were the days when people had immense patience, tolerance and very big hearts.
The more the merrier was a maxim we swore by.

The night before D-day was one of hectic activity. New clothes had to be
collected from the tailors by the women folk (there were no Malls then), the
poor tailors were literally coaxed, cajoled and threatened in that order, to
meet the deadline. Not for nothing is it said that hell hath no fury like a
woman who is not donned! For we guys, it was an occasion when most of us got to
wear our first tailored suits. Yes, that's how important an occasion Bandra
Feast was. The night before was also one to make a little cash. For the
princely sum of a few Rupees, we boys polished shoes, ironed clothes and ran
errands for the laid back. The cash went into the kitty to spurge at the fair
the next day!
The next morning, all washed, scrubbed, spruced and dressed, we trudged up to
the Mount in two's and three's. The ubiquitous candle sellers all along the
winding route, thrust their candles into our faces. The self-conscious suit
wearing ones, willy-nilly slipped into the category of "Uncles" and were
hounded much more than those of us who only sported neck ties! The smart RSP
school boys and girls looked very important controlling traffic with the
regular policemen. In strategic corners, coin changers sat, ready to change
high value notes (Rs. 100/-) for a commission of course. Notice how some things
near all religious places, are common? Finally, we reached the Basilica. The
sight of the Benevolent Anqua- re, Mari-ea all resplendent in her birthday
finery, normally a striking crimson sari, never failed to mesmerize and instil
a sense of awe in the devotees. The multifarious congregation of devotees of
all creeds, classesand castes, flocking to their Mother Mary, in a never-ending
stream, carrying their offerings of flowers, candles and wax images, is a sight
for the gods.

The walk back home was always through the fair behind the Basilica. This was
just to take stock of what lay in store, before our long-awaited foray to the
fair, after lunch. Many traditions stand rock solid. The soap

[Goanet] THE HORROR OF LIES & DECEIT

2021-09-16 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Those in Power and Authority should be always truthful and never lie. But
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant seems to be breaching this with impunity. He
has now falsely claimed that Goa is the first State to have ensured 102%
vaccination of the first dose of the COVID vaccine. This being far from the
truth, it is outrageous for a Chief Minister to deliberately make such
preposterous statements. And on Pramod Sawant’s invention of that new
figure 102%, we may all have to return to classes in Maths.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had the rank audacity to deceitfully declare
that Goa was Open Defecation Free (ODF) from 31st August 2019. It is over
two long years down the road and the very sordid ground reality is there
for all to see with people urinating and defecating out in the open. In the
hills, the fields and along the riverside across Goa we see it all.

We are far from truly becoming ODF and the government needs to get its act
together to achieve this goal in the best interests of the State and the
Health of its people. For Goa to be Open Defecation Free we would have to
first free ourselves from the stench of rampant corruption and lack of
proper governance that our State is besieged with.

The astute people of Goa are no fools to be hoodwinked and brainwashed by
false facts and figures deviously released by the Government. Transparency
and Good Governance at every level has to be the order of the day at all
times.

[Goanet] WHAT WE NOW KNOW ABOUT RACE

2021-09-16 Thread eric pinto

Africans crossed the Sinai around sixty thousand years ago. They evolved into
three broad physical types,  Turkcic, Coptic and Keltic in the plains and hills
aroundthe Black Sea. The Copts were further refined into today's Europeans in
the Kavkas mountains ofArmenia, Georgia and the lesser republics now swallowed
by Russia. Feel free to say Caucasians.   Turkey, then known as Asea/Asia, sent
waves of Kaltic and the related Atrusi (Etruscans) into Europeand the Balkans.
There is a Atrusi Museum in Croatia.   Kaltik mummies in Uzbekistan feature pig
tails and tartan skirts. Kaltik types live in Nepal and Tibet.   It was the
expansion of Germanic types that pushed the Celts into Scotland and Wales.
French Normandy is home to their remnants on Europe's mainland.    The
relentless Turkcic move east gave us the peopling of Oriental Asia, Siberia and
the the American continents. A few herd reindeer in Sweden and Norway.     Your
DNA test will label you Asian. That implies the early Coptic land of
Turkey/Asea.      Because 'Oriental' is derogatory today, the people of the
East have borrowed the moniker 'Asian'

That’s what life is all about. Succinctly expressed by a pretty Singaporean
saleswoman when I told her the shirt she was selling me was much lesser in
price than the same one I bought somewhere else.

But this time I am referring to food, specifically pork, not clothes.

In Amboli, Bombay once, it was plentiful. East Indian families would slaughter
their yard-bred animals often, spread the word in the village and sell you
whatever cuts you wanted. Tasty porkies, who knows what they were fed.

If you wanted a leitão, you had only to make a weekend trip to Mount Poinsur,
Borivali and buy the little fellows from the priests and families that bred and
sold them there. 100 bucks for a ten pounder, circa 1970.

Then I went to the Gulf. Initially there was as much pork as you wanted, coming
from Denmark and England. Well packed, presented and sold in the chiller aisles
of big supermarkets. Then all of a sudden the Emir became sanctimonious
(perhaps his new found friendship with the Saudi king made it imperative) and
notice was given that no pork would be sold in Qatar. Those were great days.
The sellers had to get rid of their stock quickly and we had a ball. Towards
the end, good pork was almost given away. After that it was famine for pork.
The only way you could get it was bringing it back from your India trip and
sneaking it past the Doha customs or meet a Filipino seaman from a ship
touching the port who smuggled and sold it to you. The Qatari custom officers
were good then. Depending on their mood, if they knew you were Christian and
carrying a modest amount, they would either wink and let you go or throw it in
a special bin as if for confiscation and when things were quieter, make their
Indian helpers empty the binned pork into the trunk of their Mercedes cars.

Then when I came to Canada, it was back from feast to famine to feast again.
Ontario pork, although not as fine as Goan pork once in taste, was hygienic,
succulent and pleasing to the eye. All at a very good price. The Chinese went
one step further. They sold you all you needed for sorpotel - blood, lungs,
liver, heart. Not to mention brain and tongue.

A similar tale played out, though in dissimilar sequence, with fresh  fish and
shrimp. Feasts in Bombay, Goa and Qatar, but famine in Toronto. We do get all
the fish you may want here, but none of it is fresh, all frozen or farmed.

Roland.

Filomena,Cow urine is available on Amazon and eBay in every form and shape
but the real money is in cow poop.?

I own a few shares in a firm that takes cow dung and turns it into gas. The
stock price went up five fold this year - mainly because the richest man on
earth - the guy who pays 50 cents for everything that is worth a dollar
bought options for shares at? twice the price it is trading now.
Oh, BTW, the US govt subsidizes the firm to collect cow poop and convert it
into gas.
