Now, you really should be able to turn that off. I don't know if you
can, mind.

Multiple Genres on the same album? Interesting :)

I liked the mass renaming capabilities of easytag, using the filter
editor, including renaming/creating directories - not found much else
that does that bit quite as well. (well, actually amarok used to be able
to do similar things, IIRC)

I've never had that issue - I tend to separate them into subdirs in that
situation. You really leave all the files in the same directory?
Most Linux media players would have an issue with that as well, in my
experience.

picard uses musicbrainz, which for me has proven pretty good up to now.
It sometimes gets things wrong though - a little manual TLC can come in
useful.

If you mean foobar2000 it's reported to work more or less perfectly
under wine:

So if all else fails...

Basically, I've found that each one offers some of the functionality I
want, but not all of it, so I end up using about 3, and the command
line. E.g.:
exfalso: - cddb lookup isn't great. it doesn't seem as successful at
finding CDs as other tag editors.
- it doesn't cope well if another program updates the tags in a file,
it just seems to ignore them
- it has a habit of asking if I'm sure I want to make changes for
*every* song I update.

easytag: - I can't find out how to get it to work with multiple artists
and genres.
- I don't think it works with custom tags.

Also neither of them work brilliantly when I have an album in two
formats in a directory.

(If I'm wrong about any of that, then please let me know.)
Don't think I've tried picard, so I'll give that a go.

My ideal tag editor (and music player) would be foobar (for windows).
It's about the one bit of software I haven't found a similar replacement
for in Linux (in my opinion). Although gmusicbrowser comes close.

M$ will continue with desperate measures to try and hold on to its
monopoly. Its business model is now faltering because most people and
businesses just need XP as a platform to run applications. Therefore
they now have nothing new to sell. Vista was a disaster and Windows 7
will not make up for this. Linux has played a part in this, but the
reality is M$ is to blame and Linux will continue to benefit and
increase its market share. Bill Gates did a Tony Blair; he both got out
while the going was good ;-)

I don't know if this quite fits your requirements, but I'll mention it
anyway:
If you've a PC that you could put it on, and if it's just Radio 4 news
you want, what about get_iplayer [1]. A very brief scan shows up "Six
O'Clock News, BBC Radio 4" among others. You could write a quick script
to run that, convert it to a format of your choice and then put it on a
portable mp3 player to listen to.

What do you expect from Microsoft. Love and kisses? They are running
shit scared. "Fear and loathing" stalk the corridors of Redmond and
they don't have anything they can do other than attack. FUD is there

You seem surprised... Don't be.

"The claims are not unlike those Microsoft has made in the past" no, more
identical really.

I think we've started to see the fall of microsoft to be honest, and it's not
because Linux is amazingly good (it's great, don't get me wrong), but it's
because Microsoft is now seen to be lying by more "average" users, not just
developers.

Without knowing which solutions you've tried, it's possible that it's the
global shortcut in KMix.

To find this, right click on the speaker icon in your taskbar and click Show
mixer window, or run KMix from the menu. From the Settings menu, click
Configure Global Shortcuts and then you can disable or change the toggle mute
shortcut in the list.

[Hampshire] SCART input to PC

2009-09-11 Thread James Courtier-Dutton
Hi,

The output of the SCART socket of a SKY box can be RGB.
Does anyone know of any PCI or PCI express cards that can capture the
RGB signal and is Linux compatible?

I can find quite a few that can capture S-Video and Composite, but none RGB.

Kind Regards

[Hampshire] Alan Turing Apology

2009-09-11 Thread Daniel Pope
Those of you who signed the petition demanding an apology for Alan
Turing may have been e-mailed about this already, but Gordon Brown has
issued an apology.

http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page20571

Reading it I felt it diminished Turing somewhat in that the description
of his meaning to Britain was merely his role in the war effort. The
petition creator wrote it better: "Alan Turing was the greatest computer
scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing."

If you haven't, you're still free to add your name to the petition if
you would like to:
