[Hardhats-members] New Kernel API documentation...

2005-03-17 Thread Kevin Toppenberg
Hey, I just stumbled across an HTML version of the
Kernel API in the VA documentation library. It is
dated March 2005, and is in Beta.

It looks like it will be good. I can look at each of
the individual pages, but it looks like the framework
that allows one to jump from page to page is not done
yet (I can't find an index.html file)

Great work, whoever is doing it.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Open Source Programmer Alleges Linux Misus e

2005-03-17 Thread Bhaskar, KS
The GPL gives you the freedom to use the product in any way that you
choose to use it, so you cannot misuse a product licensed under GPL.
Proprietary licenses can of course limit your use of a product. From
the GPL: "... Activities other than copying, distribution and
modification are not covered by this License; they are outside its
scope. The act of running the Program is not restricted ..."

Indeed you can modify a GPL'd software to your heart's content and not
make public a single byte of your enhancements. But if you distribute
or publish your enhanced software, then you must make the source code
for your enhancements available to the recipient.

The GPL (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html or
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt) is well worth a read by anyone
involved in free and open source software (if for no other reason than
to dispel the clouds of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt spread by
organizations that feel threatened by open source). It's only a couple
of pages of plain English, free of legalese.

Here's a tidbit from another article that I believe answers your question:

" When a company distributes a product that includes GPL-covered software in executable form, the "complete source code" must be available for the GPL-covered software. According to the GPL, "For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable." "

RE: [Hardhats-members] Open Source Programmer Alleges Linux Misus e

2005-03-17 Thread Mark Street
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

Read the GPL

If you modify a program that is licensed under the GPL and then
re-distribute or sell that program to a customer or entity you must
release the changes made to the source code to the community under the
GPL.

There is nothing in the GPL that says you can't sell the your version of
the program, but you must release your changes to the community. You
benefitted from the source code to build your program so the community
deserves to benefit from your additions and changes also.

And I quote ``Free software'' is a matter of liberty, not price. To
understand the concept, you should think of ``free'' as in ``free
speech,'' not as in ``free beer.''

"Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute,
study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four
kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

* The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
* The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your
needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for
this.
* The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor
(freedom 2).
* The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to
the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access
to the source code is a precondition for this."

Modules are a different story. Proprietary modules don't neccesarily use
or change GPL code or programs, they merely interface with the GPL program
indirectly. This happens in the Linux kernel, if a proprietary or closed
source module is used ... say for a video card driver, the kernel is said
to be 'tainted' by the proprietary driver.

RE: [Hardhats-members] Open Source Programmer Alleges Linux Misus e

2005-03-17 Thread Aylesworth Marc A Contr AFRL/IFSE
I'm not a lawyer but the way I read it is if you modify a program with the
GPL then the program has to also be licensed under the GPL. The only way to
get around this seems if you have modular code the only thing that has to be
GPLed is the module that has the original program in it.

Does GPL require that they provide they enhancements
they made, or just the source code of what they
started with? If the latter is the case, I don't see
what the big deal is. It's not like others can't get
their own copy of the source code from SourceForge.

Actually, he does not allege Linux misuse at all. He claims that
there are folks not living up to their end of the GPL in that they
have taken some piece of software that has been licensed as GPL and
modified it and have not put their modification back into the GPL.

Some are technical violations, for example Linksys WiFi-G router runs
linux and for a time Linksys did not provide the source code to that
box. They were held to task and now are in full GPL compliance.
(Please note he is not including Linksys in his allegations, I used it
as an example).

He is particularly versent with vendors who use some version of either
the Linux 2.4 or 2.6 kernels in their products. He is one of the
primary maintainers of the kernel-based stateful- packet handling
network modules in the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. This is known as
netfilter or iptables.

2005-03-17 Thread Greg Woodhouse
Netstat is a great tool for checking what state (in the TCP state
machine) each connection is in. When something "funny" happens, it's
often useful to check the current connection state.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Former MDC People from Brazil

2005-03-17 Thread Joseph Conn

Dear Hardhats,

I'm looking for the remaining small physician office in which
VistA Office EHR is being beta tested.  Anyone know who that might
be?   I wrote about Dr. Udochi in Baltimore and the West Virginia
Primary Care Network, where three of the test sites are located.  I'm
told the missing doc is in New Jersey, missing in the sense that CMS wouldn't
tell me who any of the beta testers were and ferreted them out with some help
from friends in the VistA community.

Anyone who knows and would be willing to share that with me,
I'd be much obliged.

Regards,

to check to see if any process is listening on that port.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Listner Shutdown Failed

2005-03-17 Thread Nancy Anthracite
I found out a few things. This happened when I was using the new One Port
CPRS and taking a chance at connecting it up to the VA Demo running on
GTM/Linux, which already appears to have the one port patch in it. There is
a problem with running that one port CPRS/Patched VistA on GTM/Linux. It
doesn't work right yet. So others of you who, like me, were giving it a test
drive, sit back and wait a bit until a work-around is found.
