While a proper server fix is always desirable, could this sort of
emergency-prevent-use-of-variable fix not be achieved using VAC?  And if
not, is it something VAC can be altered to support?  I know the main aim of
VAC is detecting client-side cheats, but still...

This is a confirmed crash.

Seems to require more than one player on a server.
