[Hornlist] Re:different links for Mechanical linkage
Dear Members, I have a student who recently purchased an Elkhart Conn 8-D with a mechanical linkage thumb valve. In order to properly adjust the horn to fit her hand size, we need to find a way to bring the thumb lever in more. Does anyone know if there are longer links available to make such an adjustment possible? Thanks for your help, Larry Garrett ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] unsubscribe or set options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
RE: [Hornlist] Re:different links for Mechanical linkage
Why not writing to Elkhart (Conn), explaining the problem ask for a longer thumb lever. Make a digi photo, so they can see the problem. Exchanging the thumb lever incl. the linkake is not a nightmare. One has to note carefully, how it was assembled, demount it without using any force mount the new thing. Use a little piece of wood between any small hammer any brass piece, care very much to reset the inner disk (bearing) so it stays perfectly flat even. You might use a small tube cut from a plastic tube, perfectly even cut, to rset this disk on its place. This is just if you like to do it yourself. If a brass repair person will do it, the better. = -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, August 01, 2004 7:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Hornlist] Re:different links for Mechanical linkage Dear Members, I have a student who recently purchased an Elkhart Conn 8-D with a mechanical linkage thumb valve. [Hornlist] Romantic Music for Brass
The Center City Brass Quintet has released a new CD entitled Romantic Music for Brass on the Chandos label (Chandos CHAN10140). Richard King, Principal hornist for the Cleveland Orchestra, is a founding member of the quintet whose members all have had experience in Major American orchestras. The works on the disc are Mendelssohn's Quartet No. 1(premiere recording of a very fine arrangment by Verne Reynolds), Ewald's Quintet No.3, and Oskar Boehme's Sextet for Brass. A trumpet playing friend of mine, who usually is not a big fan of brass quintet CD's, turned me onto this disc as he was impressed, as was I, with the musicality and lovely sound of this group. Needless to say, the playing on this disc is specatular and I was impressed by the lovely trumpet playing. Highly recommended even if you're not a fan of brass quintets. Happy listening! Re: [Hornlist] Re:different links for Mechanical linkage
In the past, I've bought string actuated 8D thumb levers and mounting brackets from Allied for various projects. Converting to a string mechanism, if they still have the parts, is a real improvement to the instrument. A hobby shop should have brass stock the same thickness, and maybe even width, to one of the linkages on the valve. Make a replacement linkage a little longer than stock. Also, the mounting bracket is probably only soft soldered on. Heat it a little, and it will fall right off. Sweat it back on in a slightly different position. Thanks for your help, Larry Garrett Hi Larry, There are two methods of solving your student's problem. The first would be to convert the Bb lever to string action. This is not very difficult to do, but probably not necessary and definitely not the easiest solution. The easiest way to solve the problem would be to rebend the valve lever spatula so that it is closer to the valve section. This should be done very carefully so that the lever does not crack. Another means of solving the problem would be to construct another longer middle section of the linkage. This section is the piece that is slightly half moon shaped with a hole at each end. It fits between the valve lever end and the valve stop arm. Keep the shape, thickness, and the hole size (and positioning) the same as the original, but just make The new piece a little longer. I hope this helps. Paul Navarro Custom Horn ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] unsubscribe or set options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Hey John, From the way this reads, I think you might have been communicating with ole John Barleycorn when you wrote this tome...Did you go through this torture upon leaving Marine Boot camp? Is having this done the musician equivalent of the Crucible? Ooorah! With my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, and with a couple of students now going through this torture, I sign... Walt Lewis They are very hard to attach to the horn player in general because you have to tie the person to a table in order to stop the flinching from the soldering torch. Additionally it is recommended that you gag the horn player so that one doesn't have to listen to the screaming-sometimes known as resultant tones. Of course whiskey often helps to cleanse the wound and help to brace the horn player as well. Finally, no studies have been done yet as to where is the best location to ascetically place the braces since the lymph nodes are in generally unreachable locations.
