Here's a case - many years ago I was playing 2nd in a production of Camelot - you know, the triple horn concerto with cast accompaniment - the 1st horniste was an undergrad university student, a fine player. Toward the end of act I her 2nd valve began to stick seriously and she was distraught. So during intermission I whipped out my kit, bared her valve, banged on it a bit, drenched it with oil and it worked fine for the rest of the evening, with the bearing plate and cap left off. She was most grateful. Well, maybe not most, but grateful none the less to be able to finish the show. As a postscript - I heard later that her horn prof criticised me for tinkering with her valve.
