From last May - - to all who suggested the Ewazen work for Horn, Flute and
Piano, thank you.

We did the Pastorale movement this evening to a big bunch of flute players
and it was well received.

rewarding and accessible work. The Pastorale is simply gorgeous.

Telemann wrote a Concerto a tre for flute , horn and continuo(I used
harpsichord and bassoon)
Muller wrote a Serenade and the flute part looks very challenging. Then
there's Charles Koechlin who composed 2 Nocturnes-I have a CD of them but

Re: [Hornlist] Works for Horn and Flute

2006-05-08 Thread David Goldberg
The Haydn work for 2 horns and 2 flutes is 12 Nocturnes, (Zwölf
Nokturnos) - lovely little pieces.

There is also a Notturno for the same quartet, by W.A. Lütgen (ca.
1840); also nice, but maybe not as inspired as the Haydn.

For me, the unaccompanied fl/hn duet pièce de resistance is the Suite
Champêtre by M. Boucard, which, despite being a modern French work is
very lively, lovely, and accessible. Don't leave home without it - the
flutists will line up for their chance to play it with you.

If you want a threesome filled out by a pianist, then there are many
choices in addition to the Telemann Concerto a Tre, which has a somewhat
klunky and simplistic horn part, but also has a lovely melodic slow
movement featuring the absence of the horn.

There is the Trio in F Major, by J.J. Quantz, for violin or flute or
oboe, and horn and piano; lots of 18th century style noodles here that
you would expect from J.J.

Serenade, op.15 by Ed. Müller is a short romantic piece for fl/hn/piano.

Then there are numerous trio sonatas by the likes of Vivaldi, Telemann,
Quantz, Loeillet, and other 18th century composers. For many of these,
the horn can play the 2nd line, especially if it is written with the
oboe in mind, and the basso continuo can be played by piano, or bassoon,
tuba, etc.

Other works playable by fl/hn/piano include:

Alphorn, by R. Strauss, where the flute plays the soprano voice part;

Shepherd on the Rock, the lush Schubert song, where the flute plays what
was originally the clarinet part, and the horn plays the voice part.
The Schirmer edition contains both flute and Bb clarinet parts. The
horn has to read from the pianist's score.

Auf Dem Strom, the other lush Schubert song, where the flute plays the
voice part.

The Poulenc Trio for horn, trumpet and trombone; this is much improved
with flute playing the trumpet part, bassoon playing the trombone part,
and horn playing more delicately than usual.
