Teachers in pc schools often download at home and bring the *.flv file to
school and show it or put it on a moodle server to get round blocking

Playing youtube video in the xo is jumpy but sort of watchable, the audio is ok
on some(older?) files but repeats jumpily on some (newer?)files

XO (0.82) wont play saved *.flv files
"no activity can open this object video/x-flv"

Caroline,

You do a good job outlining the problem.
Even with bandwidth, the Browse activity is just not that great (at least on
the XOs) for streaming video.

I am imagining some combination of teachers providing scaffolding or a
preview of some video(s), and then the students watching them from home (or

Get someone else to download videos, and put them on the school
server, or provide them on USB keys.

> No internet access

As above. An alternative approach is to fund Internet access through
microfinance, taking advantage of the business opportunities that
Internet opens up.

> Bandwidth if everyone is watching a video at once

Collaboration should allow one XO to download, and share with others.
Otherwise, cache on server.

Lesson plans. Yes, we need thousands of lesson plans.

> Legal issues, what is and isn't fair use of the a YouTube resource?

Ask source to license under CC, or redo in a different version. The
ideas are not subject to copyright, just the expression of the ideas,
meaning words and images. Get children to make their own versions as
homework, once they understand Record, Scratch, and sufficient subject
matter.

I think Gerald is right, we need a general way to help Sugar Teachers use
YouTube resources.

Can people help me brainstorm?

Challenges to using YouTube Resources:

   1. YouTube is blocked by the district
   2. No internet access
   3. Bandwidth if everyone is watching a video at once
   4. Workflow/Classflow challenges how do we get the kids watching the
video we want them to watch and doing the work before and after to make it a
   learning experience.
   5. Legal issues, what is and isn't fair use of the a YouTube resource?

Right. Then we can either put his videos on OLPC XS school servers, or
we can write Etoys or other versions of what he does.

I have an appointment with the Bartholomew County schools people in
Indiana on March 4 to discuss replacing textbooks with free electronic
learning materials, and this will be part of the discussion.

Something else that may be worth considering is the development of an

videos, and/or prompts for notes or reflections.

Khan does state that he plans to tie up with others to scale his operations.

Notice the comment by students at around 3:26s - "The teachers are good but
... it lets us learn at our own pace ... pause, rewind ...". I heard this
sentiment echoed by many students.

I believe this ability to pace one's learning along with the 10min capsule
structure may help us solve the scalability problem in education.
