The PEMODE password is calculated from the system serial number (CEC, 12
characters), current date, and a mutate table which is specific to the SE
software main release version and MCL. The only secret part is the serial
number ... I guess it was never intended to be a very secret method, but rather
to avoid people damaging things.

I write that the S/N is secret, as it is the only thing specific to a certain
installation. The method is present on all the SEs in the world, and the tables
on all the SEs with the same MCL - this makes them not so secret. But the S/N
is unique, known by IBM and the client - it may be not enough, but it is all we
have. In a secure setup, it hardly matters, as is not intended to protect the
system against external attacks, just against technical misuse by legitimate
users. Of course, the HMCs are a different topic, but not for this thread.

2012-03-22 Thread R.S.
We can dispute how effective the protection is, but S/N is (can be)
perfectly known to every customer and every IBMer, and even DHL employees.
What is not know is the method to calculate the password. Maybe it's not
so hard to hack SE and disassemble this method, but is NOT known
neither to customer nor to most IBMers, including CE's.
What is it intended for - that's another question, but I think that
other users like sysprog, acsadmin and service do have enough facilities
to shut one's own foot.

I just checked again - I don't see it. Maybe the content you see depends

Note that the information about logging onto SERVICE wouldn't work since
changing the passwords to all of the default IDs is something you were supposed

Well, yes and no. From my (limited) experience I have never seen HMC
with changed passwords for default userids, exluding ACSADMIN everywhere
I decide/advise. ;-) And I have never seen IBM engineer which would ask
for the password - they expect to be SERVMODE.

Note 1. Not long time ago the passwords were set by ACSADMIN and were
kept in open-text form. (AFAIK HMC pre-1.8)

Note 2. Usually HMC is kept in secure location, so it is possible to
assign personal responsibility to operator on duty. In many case the HMC
is always logged-on.

But you're right that it contains some interesting and useful information.

Secret Service Guide

2012-03-16 Thread R.S.

I just got the following publication:

zEnterprise 196
Service Guide
GC28-6892-02

This publication is NOT present on ResourceLink, there is no clue about
it's existence. Other pubs like Installation Manual are present on the
ResourceLink. It looks like some secret... nevermind. The publication is
IMHO *VERY USEFUL*!

I found the following information
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=pub1gc28686604
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=pub1gc28685303

So it looks the similar guides exist for z10 and z9 but the links for
download are dead.

Now the question:
Q1. How can I download Service Guied for z10, z9 nd maybe older models?
Q2. Are there any other secret manuals for those machines? (of course
not those from ResourceLink).

I just downloaded it.

I also found doc number for older machines:
z9 EC Service Guide GC28-6841
z9 BC Service Guide GC28-6853
z990 Service Guide G229-9039
z900 Service Guide G229-9027

I also found z9EC Service Guide in hardcopy (still looking for sofcopy).

So, I'm still looking for Guides for z990, z900 and maybe older machines.

I also revealed that the publications usually were delivered on CD/DVD

MP3000 Service Guide is SY24-6155 - easily found online. It even has

The Parts Catalogue for that machine is S123-7471, also online at IBM.

I did just that in addition to searching within the IBM websites (but I have no
access to ResourceLink). Google finds header pages for each of these
documents on the IBM websites, but all the links to actually download the
manuals are either gone (404) or circular.

David,
Yes, I used google, spent much time on it. Then asked on the forum.
Now I've also tried www.archive.org, maybe I can't use this website, but
I found nothing.

My wife advised me to browse our wardrobe, do you think it's good idea?
;-)

More seriously, to all: maybe someone has any of the publications on CD
and he/she's willing to share?

The wayback machine only has 147 IBM pages, all from 2010, with the link
address that appears on the header pages but has no similar IBM pages before
that, and nothing at all for the four manual numbers that the OP listed.

But thanks for the suggestion.
