RE: [IceHorses] A good horsey day/Lorraine
You lucky dog. I don't know if you know Carla from the list. She is going to work with Dagur for me. So maybe there is hope for me. I am going to take him to her place. I don't know Carla, Lorraine, but I do appreciate that you are going to give Dagur one more chance. If he's not the right horse for you, there's no shame at all in selling him, but it's nice of you to try to get him to a position where he will either work out for you, or have a better getting the right home next time. Re: [IceHorses] A good horsey day/Lorraine
Win win situation. Janice and Susan are right. If it works, you will have the horse of your dreams. If it doesn't, than you will be sure you have done everything you could do to help your relationship with the horse and will have learned lots in the process. Hunter may be at the top of my all time favorite horse list, but for the first two weeks I had him, I went around mumbling I have made a HUGE mistake. And, I probably had, but that spark that made him so cuckoo, has turned in a positive directon and now he's an absolute kick to ride. My grandaughter refused to come into the riding ring once with that crazy horse. However, don't get hurt. Nancy

Now Janice has him and loves him and it seems he pulls the same antics that so upset me and she just laughs and enjoys him. i will say he is very sensitive and sometimes I could figure out what bothered him but when I could not I assumed it was me. So if you and Dagur are not a match there will be someone is. Wow. That is interesting. I didn't know you raised him. Not all horses and people are a match. I have sold horses to people who love them. And I didn't get along with them. Sometimes I think horses hate me. Although I had an Arab for 17 years. In a message dated 12/17/2007 10:48:23 AM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) Lorraine, I think sometimes we expect too much from an animal. Like Dagur. Maybe you should have made a pet out of him first. Really separate him and make him respond to you. Willie was a really good baby and then as a stallion he was a shit. Not bad but would not let me love on him. Didn't want handled that much. I forced him to tolerate me. I tied him up to the tree and washed him and brushed him then blanketed and put clothes on him. After a while he started to like the attention. By the time I gelded him he let me do anything to him. ANYTHING so it was easy to work with the surgery and what ever. Now he gives kisses and loves me so that it's is obvious to other people. He kinda tolerates others and really had gotten to like Sherry totally. So she is the one working him. No one has ever been mean to this horse ever so maybe that is it also. Just like loading. I will not ever fight a horse to load. I never have a problem either. When they came to pick up Willie he refused to load for the daughter. I said, no no no give me that pony and we walked away from the trailer and I gave him a carrot and said come on lets get in and go for a ride. He walked right in. Trust also. Now maybe he is just that type of pony and since I have had him since he was eight months old its different. I hope you get to solve the issues with Dagur. Remember I have the trainer up here that can do anything with a horse. Pedro. Willie is with Sherry since she was working the handicapped issues with him and i had already ridden him. I put Willow with Pedro for six months. Sylvia **See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop000304)

--- Lorraine [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You have no idea how I am angonizing about this. May be you do. Ha. Yes, I sorta do! I have 5 horses when I only should have 2. My TWH mare, Raven, doesn't get ridden much and what she needs is a person who would like to trail ride with a group. Raven is a great trail horse who will do 180* spins if alone or in front. But is perfect in a group. Finding the right person for her might be difficult. Foxi is older, but perfect for a timid rider. But I don't want her moved around anymore. Her son (and Andi's) is almost 2 and would be great for anyone wanting to raise their own. But he was born here, and despite my best intensions, I have become quite fond of him. And Whisper, well you know her problems, but they can be dealt with (or in reality, not dealt with, just worked around). And Andi - my perfect one! The last 2 are the only ones I should keep, but my heart tends to rule my head. Oh well! Re: [IceHorses] A good horsey day/Lorraine
I have a theory... probably just bull:) But i believe some horses need a firm hand and some need a gentle loving hand. I think you are right Janice. I am not a bullier. I would rather love than fight. Dagur has a stronger will than I but hopefully Carla will fix that. I need to learn what she is doing also. I don't know Dagur and I don't know what training methods have been used with Dagur, but I wanted to share my experiences with Gloi and how he appeared to be resistant and stubborn when he was not. He came to me being pretty willing but, we hit some roadblocks, mainly when I tried to take him out alone. I went to a clinic and was told I had a pet not a partner and have a video of the 'natural' trainer yelling at me to 'rip his face off' (with the reins) when I had trouble steering him. Had a different 'natural' trainer come here to help me and told me that he was very resistant and stubborn. Couldn't get him to move doing the Parelli 7 games even with the highest pressure. After several sessions with him appearing to become more and more resistant, I decided that Gloi needed another approach. I started with clicker training and could very quickly and easily get him to move away with barely a touch. I don't know for sure if he finally understood what it was I wanted and the clicker training gave us a form of communication or if Gloi is a bit stubborn and doesn't take kindly to being pushed around. Maybe the getting firmer and 'louder' with the pressure or signals upset him or scared him. I do know that he is not nearly as brave as Falki and he will appear to stop listening or become stubborn if he is scared. What I do know is that with Gloi getting firmer did not work which is very good because I am not a bullier. I also think that Gloi took longer to become comfortable here and this may have added to his being a bit more fearful. Gloi needs to trust me and be my pet before he could be my partner. I still have not been doing much riding with him alone. How can I expect him to be comfortable with it when I'm not completely comfortable going out alone anymore. I used to go out alone with a horse that had spent many years traveling the routes with other horses. Even though he loved adventures, he never really loved going out alone. How can I expect a horse that is more timid and new to these trails feel comfortable going out alone? After a few near misses with my old horse and an accident resulting in a broken ankle (thankfully while riding with others), I realize that I just shouldn't go out alone with no cell phone service out here. I call Gloi timid because he is not as brave, but on the ground when he was being forced to do something he appeared anything but timid. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm glad that I didn't let myself label Gloi as being stubborn or resistant. Those were just his visible 'symptoms' but not really the root of his problem. If I would have just paid attention to his 'symptoms' and continued to use a firm hand I would have made things even worse. I love him and know he will be great going out with Falki when we can hit the trails this spring. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy working on the ground and clicker training my boys. -- Anna Southern Ohio

RE: [IceHorses] A good horsey day/Lorraine
I know just how you feel. I raised Janice's Tivar from a baby and agonized over him for years as he would get pissy and lay his ears back and I thought he hated me. He was my best trail horse and was just so sensible but I thought that he barely tolerated me when I rode him. A friend loved him and he her but then he started bucking when anyone got on. When Karen got him, her vet thought of ulcers which mine did not. And one of the main reasons I wanted to take Tivar when Ann expressed that she was rather much at the end of her rope with Tivar was because I had had that feeling too. I was so depressed when Gracie developed her bucking problem here, after she'd been started gently and slowly and was well on her way to being a great young horse. We restarted her from the ground twice after the problem first arose, but we'd get to a certain point and the bucking would return. I had saddle fittings for her, and the vet couldn't really find anything. I was really at my wit's end with her after a week-long work-up at Virginia Tech couldn't find any firm diagnosis. The vets at Virginia Tech finally suggested acupuncture for Gracie and that was the miracle she needed. (She has a scar from an old pasture injury on a major meridian - that's all we can guess is her problem.) Tivar needed a fresh start with no pressure, and ulcer treatment. Loftur needed someone to pay attention to his painful back. And I think Angie mainly needs for someone to believe in her and spend some time with her. I think a lot of us reached that level of frustration with our horses at some point along the way. Karen Karen Thomas Wingate, NC No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. All my neighbors have normal hours unlike me. HA! What's normal?? I am lucky, tho, in that I work my 40 hours(well, 39 actually) in 3 days, so even with my second job every other weekend, I have more days off than if I worked a regular 5 day/8hr/day work week. I am the same, I have been night shift for more years than I can remember and I just never let it get in my way. I am a nurse and prefer the work comraderie of nights so I have less stress than if I worked days, I don't rotate from days to nights at the job so I think that it is better since I am less stressed in the job and I get a 25% shift differential that I hope translates into better quality of life and maybe 25% longer life too! Wouldn't that be great. The NIH released a study a couple of weeks ago saying more women who work night shift get breast cancer than women on days. They forgot to mention that more people who work night shift are overweight and the biggest contributor to breast cancer other than genetic influence is obesity. I wish I could have gotten the money for that study. And I am not saying everyone who works nights is fat, I am but I am working on fixing that. I said earlier I rode my horse yesterday, and I did it when I got off work from a 13 hour shift that morning, feed the chickens, geese, peacocks dogs and all 15 horses. Then I tacked up and went riding. I just got about 2 hours of riding which should fix me until this storm front leaves Maryland and I went to bed after the ride. My friends think I am crazy but I love to ride and not many people can ride on the week days before it is dark so I get riding buddies when I can and just alter my schedule to match everyone else. It doesn't seem like a chore if it is something you love to do. Even I can't get my husband to go riding with me but I get so many other things from him, that I don't nag him to be a riding buddy. I just mentioned that since I know so many people who get husband horses only to have to sell them because the husband isn't really into it like they are and they end up fighting about it and eventually have to sell since the guy didn't really want it to start with. My hubby has said he wants a quarter horse but I would have to give up one of mine before he got one. I told him I couldn't and since he doesn't ride but once or twice a year, he could just ride one of mine. I bet I am one of the few who won't get a husband horse since I am too stingy to give up what I love and couldn't part with anymore than my own kids. Sorry to go on and on but I got on a roll and then got lost. Trail riding is so darned addictive. I wish everyone on the list could live within 2 hours of me so we could ride all the time, sadly, no one is close that I have seen post here.

[IceHorses] A good horsey day
I took Andi out today with my Mom's horse, Fireman. I thought they would go good together because they both have a fast walk. I put Andi in front, we rode side by side, and I put him behind. He was his typical, perfect Andi self no matter where he was. Andi is definately my dream-come-true horse! Then, much to my surprise on our way home, Mom said she thought she could do a 25 mile ride! I didn't say anything at the time, but later I asked her if she was serious about doing some local LD endurance rides. She said yes, although she may need her walker at the end of the ride. I said her walker would fit in the truck! So I will continue to ride Andi out alone most of the time, and Mom and I will start to condition Fireman and Whisper! Speaking of Whisper; after I got home and got Andi up, I took out Whisper as I was to meet with my neighbor, Sharon, for a ride with just the two of us. We did some trotting and Whisper was fine. She had to canter a bit to keep up with Sharon's warmblood's trot, but it was an easy canter and not an out of control canter. So not only am I not going to give Whisper any extra feed, I am going to keep my rides with just one or two other horses for now. Whisper could be a horse who gets too hyped up in a larger crowd. So it seems I need a horse to ride in a group. H, that would be Raven!!! I just have to get her in shape, so to help mom ride longer, she and I will go out after Whisper and Fireman are done on Foxi and Raven! We will start with them on short, 3 mile rides and build up until Raven is in shape to ride with the Nag Hags group! Sounds perfect! That puts me on 3 horses a day!
