Here are some old photos and not so old. The really old one is my
sisters Linda and Susan - when Susan was a baby and Linda would have been
about 9. Then our family ride re-enactment on my dad's 80th birthday in
1989 at Spruce Meadows.
Ok. That just makes me jealous. I would have loved to grow up with a
riding family! Oh well, at least my married-life-family rides, so I can't
complain TOO much I guess.
You will notice that we are pulling on the reins to keep the horses in
a line - quite difficult to do even at a walk and we weren't.
Kudos to you for pointing that out. It's still impressive, even if
everything isn't 100% perfect, and yes, it is hard to keep horses in synch.
(It actually looks pretty darned good to me.)
The hands free photo is from 1965 on a tour Linda across the US to
major horse shows with a group of students and Hungarian mares and
stallions.
Hands-free and the horses are pretty much together in their jump. I'm
impressed. I may not be the best drill rider, but at least I know when
something is hard to coordinate. Just staying in sync isn't easy, but with
no hands is really good.

First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed.
Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
