The current driver is 195 series and not the one that you activated. Go to system- administration-hardware driver and pick the latest. Check your Linux headers and restricted modules from package manager. Install them if they are not activated, reboot and check hardware drivers. The latest nVidia driver is available, just updated it yesterday on my system. Let me know if this fails and we will then try reinstall of x. hai i have installed ubuntu 10.04 also I tried to install nvidia driver(tried-nvidia current,173,...)but after installation ubuntu booting only in low graphics mode only. nvidia driver is activated,but when running the nvidia-settings it says "You do not appear to using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server."
