[ilugd] President APJ Open Source?

2005-02-25 Thread Mayank Jain
Hi,

There is an article in Hindustan Times (25th feb, 2005), page 15
(lower half) titled
Kalam to use Laptop for joint address.

Read it on you will find it mentioning Power-Point presentation.
He shall be using the laptop instead printed material as his hand is injured.

I wonder how our President (with all due respects), who favoured Open
Source so openly, could use MS stuff when it comes to his personal
usage... ???
OR
Is it that his staff is not trained enough to install use Win32
binaries of OpenOffice???

BTW, I think, its not even a remotest posibility that his lappy may be
running GNU stuff when he addresses the house!

So? Can't we all, members of ILUGD, atleast forward him a signed
petition (or some sort of request) to give GNU a fair chance to prove
itself before the house :-)

what ya say?

my mail is messed up, I had to repartition my hard disk. Sorry if you got
multiple copies of this.

It is my understanding, that the National Association for the Blind in New
Delhi wishes the following services -- please feel free to forward to
individuals or lists that might be interested.

1. On one machine at the NAB, Linux plus the screen reader Gnopernicus need
to be installed, so that the NAB can at least evaluate Gnopernicus, and the
rest of the Linux platform, for their needs.

2. A distribution created, that automatically installs the above on a PC, no
questions asked, or only questions asked verbally. This would allow a
text-challenged person to autonomously install and use Linux.

3. Gnopernicus needs to work for a typist going fast in Hindi. How good is
the state of the art in Hindi TTS?

4. Gnopernicus needs to be able to rapidly switch between languages. Say,
for instance, you are viewing a Hindi page in an English browser. When
accessing the menu, it must speak English, while reading out content, Hindi.

While the NAB will, I believe, be willing to pay for these services, or at
least put up funding proposals for them, the outcome would be of interest to
a far wider population. The illiterate can understand spoken language, but
not written: Gnopernicus would be an easy way for them to use the computer.
If the quality of the TTS were to be decent, those of us who nowadays rarely
read Hindi, could start tracking the Hindi newspapers, or access the
computer while driving. (once the problem were solved for Hindi/English,
other pairs of languages would not be hard to address) -- the
text-challenged are probably the majority in this world...

I have, actually, a revolutionary new concept for TTS: this computer can be
hired for two hundred dollars a month, and its Hindi TTS is so good, that
people find it indistinguishable from human speech. You guessed it, I am in
fact talking about a human being, perhaps someone who is wheelchair-bound,
available to you via the Internet. Send her text, or a url, and it is read
back to you, either live, or with some delay. You might just give her
keywords, and she would do a google search, refining the search results in
consultation with you. Send her a snapshot from your camera phone, and she
describes what it shows. This might make a wonderful new kind of call center
(or is someone doing this already?) that all of us might find to be a useful
way of using the Internet via telephone. How hard would it be to set up
Linux software to facilitate this kind of service?

A great platform for such a service would be a community wireless network.
You would then have the bandwidth to do high quality voice, which would
allow, let us say, a blind child to attend normal school. He might take
frequent snapshots of the blackboard, and hear a bedridden volunteer
describe them to him through his WiFi phone. Or, read out the question paper
and take down his dictation of the answers.

People with interest and expertise in dealing with such problems, do get in
touch.
,
Arun Mehta

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-85-1 February 25, 2005
gaim vulnerabilities
CAN-2005-0208, CAN-2005-0472, CAN-2005-0473
===

A security issue affects the following Ubuntu releases:

Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog)

The following packages are affected:

gaim

The problem can be corrected by upgrading the affected package to
version 1:1.0.0-1ubuntu1.2. In general, a standard system upgrade is
sufficient to effect the necessary changes.

Details follow:

The Gaim developers discovered that the HTML parser did not
sufficiently validate its input. This allowed a remote attacker to
crash the Gaim client by sending certain malformed HTML messages.
(CAN-2005-0208, CAN-2005-0473)

Another lack of sufficient input validation was found in the Oscar
protocol handler which is used for ICQ and AIM. By sending specially
crafted packets, remote users could trigger an infinite loop in Gaim
which caused Gaim to become unresponsive and hang. (CAN-2005-0472)

WU-FTPD File Globbing Denial of Service Vulnerability

iDEFENSE Security Advisory 02.25.05
www.idefense.com/application/poi/display?id=207type=vulnerabilities
February 25, 2005

I. BACKGROUND

WU-FTPD is an ftp daemon for Unix systems developed at Washington
University. More information is available at:

http://www.wu-ftpd.org/

II. DESCRIPTION

Remote exploitation of an input validation vulnerability in version
2.6.2 of WU-FPTD could allow for a denial of service of the system by
resource exhaustion.

The vulnerability specifically exists in the wu_fnmatch() function in
wu_fnmatch.c. When a pattern containing a '*' character is supplied as
input, the function calls itself recursively on a smaller substring. By
supplying a string which contains a large number of '*' characters, the
system will take a long time to return the results, during which time it

will be using a large amount of CPU time.

III. ANALYSIS

After a user logs into the ftpd, an attacker can send a simple command
which will cause high CPU utilization.

To exploit this vulnerability, a simple ftp client is sufficient. Once
logged in, either anonymously or as an authenticated user, issuing the
following command will cause the machine to become less responsive.

ftp dir ***
 ***
 ***
 **.*

By re-connecting and issuing the command multiple times, the system can
be made completely unresponsive. This may prevent legitimate access to
services provided by the system for the period of the attack.

IV. DETECTION

iDEFENSE has confirmed the existence of this vulnerability in version
2.6.2 and 2.6.1 of WU-FTPD. It is suspected that previous versions are
also affected by this vulnerability.

V. WORKAROUND
Consider disabling the ftpd. If this is not viable as an option,
consider disabling anonymous access. Disabling anonymous access will not

prevent local users from exploiting this vulnerability.

VI. VENDOR RESPONSE

No vendor response received.

VII. CVE INFORMATION

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project has assigned the
names CAN-2005-0256 to these issues. This is a candidate for inclusion
in the CVE list (http://cve.mitre.org), which standardizes names for
security problems.

VIII. DISCLOSURE TIMELINE

02/09/2005 Initial vendor notification - No response
02/18/2005 Initial vendor notification - No response
02/25/2005 Public disclosure

IX. CREDIT

Adam Zabrocki (pi3 / pi3ki31ny) is credited with this discovery.
