I was able to install Tiger 10.4 from the disk from eBay and everything still worked. The upgrades that I downloaded from Apple are what did me in. Maybe changing out the hard drive should be my next step since the one that is there could not be repaired. The Apple Store does not work on vintage machines. I had G5 iMac that died on me and they would not work on it because it was 5 years old. Thanks for replying. I don't have the original software. I bought system 4.0 from ebay and installed it. In my haste, I installed over what was there. In hindsight, should have re-formated the disk and started from scratch. I did reset the PRAM and had no effect. Tried to start in safe mode and now it won't stay powered up. Worse yet I cannot find the system software I purchased for this machine. I haven't got a clue what happened to it. I am so frustrated because I am usually very careful with system software and the install disk just wasn't in the box. I was able to run a Data Rescue disk to boot from. iMac G4 700MHz
I know this computer is very old (snowball), but I just need one for my autistic grandson to use in his room. I just wanted to get him on-line and off my computer watching Barney. So, I started installing updates to get to Mac OS X 10.4.11 and use TenForFox, or at least try to get him on Youtube. Everything went well until the 10.4.3 update, then black screen and cursor only after start-up. I had previously used the 10.4.2 combo update. Tried to start in "safe mode" but things got worse. Now it won't complete the boot and just shuts down. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I feel like I really got close and I just don't want to give up just yet.
