Subject: Researchers rediscover rare plant species

 Researchers rediscover rare plant species

PUNE: Researchers from several institutes, including the Agharkar
Research Institute here, have rediscovered a rare endangered plant species,
'spiderwort', after a gap of 161 years. They stumbled upon the rare plant
species during a study to assess the floristic diversity of Chandoli
national park in the northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra, which was
recently declared a world heritage site by Unesco.

After its collection in 1851 from Parva Ghat in the state, the species
was not found anywhere else in the state and was considered extinct.

 * The discovery, which has been published as a research paper in the
Journal of Threatened Taxa, was made jointly by Shrinath Kavade, professor,
Art, Commerce and Science College, Lanja in Ratnagiri; Subhash Deokule,
 University of Pune; P Lakshminarasimhan, Botanical Survey of India, Howrah;
 Prakash Diwekar, Botanical Survey of India, Western Regional Centre, Pune;
and Sachin Punekar of Agharkar Research Institute. Punekar is attached to
 the city-based non-governmental organization, Biosphere.*

Kavade said, "The species is called Belosynapsis vivipara, which was
found along the backwaters of Warana river across Sahyadri range. The genus
Belosynapsis is represented by five species distributed from South Asia
  to New Guinea.
In India, however, it is represented by three species, namely, B
epiphytica, B kewensis and B vivipara."

Punekar said, "The specimens found in 1851 were from Parva Ghat, which
lies at the junction of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka, while the latest
discovery was in the northern-most extension of the northern Western Ghats
of Maharashtra. The distance between the two points is sizable and a
thorough study of the area lying in between could further lead to similar
discoveries, which will go a long way in conserving this threatened plant
 species."

The recent study found about 100 such plants growing on large tree
trunks in the riparian forest patches of Male and Patharpunj villages in
Chandoli national park, which forms the northern-most distribution of this
vulnerable species. The plants usually grow at a higher elevation, on
densely moss covered tree trunks and branches of trees in shady,
 semi-evergreen riparian forests.

"This species is on the verge of extinction and is equally important to
biodiversity. Thus, before declaring any area as protected, certain species
of the flora and fauna should be given due importance. Also, total
protection should be given to the riparian forest areas of Chandoli
national park for conservation of this vulnerable and endemic species.
Ex-situ conservation and domestication of the species in greenhouses and
gardens for future survival, besides its re-introduction in wild and
similar habitats is imperative," Punekar said.

I am sorry I cannot confirm its identification. There are many cultivated

Further the flowers in the plant seems to have withered and only the

Re: [efloraofindia:306287] Martynia Annua : Devil's Claws ; Tiger's claws : AK

2018-09-30 Thread Ushadi Micromini
that was in 2009
would it still be around?

this paper says its an annual:
http://www.ukjpb.com/article_details.php?id=2
i quote/copy paste from it
".Among different medicinal plants *M. annua *are used in Indian
traditional medicine and in folklore for many diseases. The leaves and
fruits are the biologically active part of *M.annua*7, 8. *M. annua *belongs
to family Martyniaceae (or Pedaliaceae), is a well-known small herbaceous
annual plant, distributed throughout India. It is commonly known as the
Cat`s claw or Devil`s claw refers to the inner woody capsule which splits
open at one end into two curved horns or claws. They produce strange seed
pods that attach to the feet and legs of large animals, and include some of
the largest hitchhiker fruits in the world9." end quote.

good luck since its an annual, and its like weed once established, you may
yet find it in undisturbed areas, like old abandoned yards, plots were
owner has not built houses yet etc.

Re: [efloraofindia:306310] Re: Paulownia tomentosa

2018-09-30 Thread Ushadi Micromini
Dear Anil
what a magnificent growth
judging from the symmetrical (almost) ovoid shape it seems even though its
is a tight urabn environment
it may yet become a specimen tree.
unless something seem to have prompted some limb cutting, hope they stop at
that. (left side in 2nd pic. )
is this in Simla too?

now wait for a shower of seeds
fun to photograph them
and try and grow them
can you save some for me if its in your neighborhood?

And thank you for giving me a treat today.
love it

I think *Ixora finlaysoniana* Wall. ex G.Don

(Cultivated)- *Ixora pavetta* (*I. parviflora* Vahl.) has corolla tube
only 8-10 mm long, where as in the above plant the corolla tube is longer
than 2 cm (compare with about 4-5 mm long lobes), a feature of *I.
finlaysoniana*.

It is growing in Shimla itself. It is fast growing tree. You have also seen
the photographs clicked 4-5 years ago. I clicked these photos today as
required by Dr. S.L. Kochhar Sir for his forthcoming book. He is also a
renowned botanist known for his Economic Botany book.
I'll collect seeds in March/April when they are ripe.

yes i saw that , its right here up in the thread
so can you tell me when his book comes out
economic botany was not an organized science, when during morning walks my
dad would tell us about
the uses and economic importance of all things green that we encountered.

Back to this Pawlownia: i saw some writings about how fast growing a tree
this is
and there are plantations in the west that grow them on acres and acres

do we have something similar in india ?
thanks again

Re: [efloraofindia:306337] Glochidion jarawae (Phyllanthaceae) from South Andaman Island

2018-09-30 Thread Tapas Chakrabarty
Well, *Glochidion *J.R. Forst. & G.Forst. is a distinct genus of the family
Phyllanthaceae as per the current usage and it is closely related to
*Phyllanthus
*L., differing in the absence of the disc glands in the flowers. There
have been proposals to merge the genera *Glochidion, Sauropus *and *Breynia
*under *Phyllanthus. *However, it has also be suggested that if such a
merger is done, *Phyllanthus *will become a mega-genus and the situation
will then become highly complicated from the taxonomic point of view.
Unless further studies are made leading on to more convincing
interpretations, it seems appropriate to treat *Glochidion *as a distinct
genus for the present. Hence the species under consideration here should
be maintained under the genus *Glochidion *as the disc glands are absent in
the flowers.
Thanking you.
Best regards.

Re: [efloraofindia:306376] Orchid for ID :: Ghangaria-VOF, Uttarakhand :: Aug 2018 :: ARKSEP-35

2018-09-30 Thread Alka Khare
Thanks Pankaj ji for validating..

This particular area was very rich w.r.t. diversity. I tried hard to find
any more orchids but :(
I think we went too late in the season - last week of August, hence could
not find any more specimens.

Alka Khare
