Lokhandi is a name that is used for various species of Ixora. This can be
Ixora brachiata however proper identifiaction will need flowers as foliage
of Ixora brachiata and Ixora pavetta are quite similar

[efloraofindia:104613] Save Trees

2012-01-18 Thread Nudrat Sayed
Dear All,

38 healthy trees are facing the BMC axe in already tree deficient Mumbai.
The BMC wants to widen a nallah at Vikhroli as they want to avert flooding
in the area during monsoon. As per the information gathered from the
inhabitants of the area, the water level in the nallah remains atleast two
feet below the bank even on the day of highest rainfall last year.

Some of these trees are more than 50 yrs old and is a roost for a large
number of birds. There is a neglected open ground on the other bank and the
nallah can be widened on that bank however the BMC is adamant on chopping
down these trees.

I have written to the BMC Commissioner pointing out the issue and attached
the letter along with my post.

It will be very helpful if you all sent similar letter to the MCGM
Commissioner in order to save these trees from being axed.

I am sorry if i have violated the guidelines of this group.

2011-12-15 Thread Nudrat
Hello,

The plant in the picture is Terminalia arjuna. Here in Mumbai we have
a few trees in the Zoo and one near BPT gardens. The fruits of all
these trees differ in size from one another. Flowering of one of the
trees in the zoo is early while some flower late. These are my
personal observations as i have done detailed study of this species.

2011-03-20 Thread Nudrat Sayed
Hello,

Let me clarify,I** have never tried to stress my superiority over anyone cos
i strongly believe that all of us can be wrong. Do not take my comment as a
personal attack on someone or that i am trying to show down anyone. That is
not my habit and that is not wht i was thought.

Humility is wht makes a person a good human and not arrogance. Personal
attacks are indicative of arrogance which i strongly oppose.

Hello,

My recent interaction on this group made me feel that people take comments
made while identifying plants personally. This practise is in my view quite
unhealthy as anyone can be incorrect in identification. People should not
have this attitude that a comment made is a personal attack on them. We all
are matured individuals and should take comments made on our post in the
similar manner as we expect others to take our comments.

Hello,

I have seen Bridelia berries at all stages and have eaten them too.
They are quite sweet when ripe. I am confident that the tree in

leaves donot seem to be opposite.

I may be incorrect about Lagerstroemia.

belong to Holarrhena antidysentrica. I could however be wrong.

confusion. Holoptelea has distichous leaves so if the phyllotaxy of

2010-10-11 Thread Nudrat
Hello,

I agree with Dinesh ji. The plant in picture is not Ficus hispida for
sure. The leaves are completely different from those of F. hispida and
the fruits of F.hispida are green when unripe and turns black when
ripe unlike fruits of the plant in picture.

2010-07-11 Thread Nudrat Sayed
Hi There,

There is no question of the plant being Wrightia tinctoria. As far as
Wrightiia arborea is concerned, the young leaves are velvetty only.

Theleaves do look like those belonging to a Combretaceae but as it was
mentioned that the plant had abundant latex, so latex is present only in a
few families rather genera. Hence i said i would go for Wrightia arborea.

Yes i am the same Nudrat who you met at CAT a yr ago in regards the Rani
Bagh issue. However i no longer work with CAT. At present i work with BEAG.

Take Care
Regards
Nudrat

Hello,

Rauvolfia serpentina has pinkish corolla tube. It can be a possibility
that the plant in picture could be R. densiflora. This species is very
similar to R. serpentina in appearance and occurs in Southern part of
India. It is also known as R. decurva

[efloraofindia:33490] Re: 280410GS2 from Delhi for ID

2010-04-28 Thread Nudrat
Hello,

This is indeed Rauvolfia tetraphylla. However it is not the real
sarpagandha. That is Rauvolfia serpentina. It is used as hypotensive
and in mental disturbances. The reserpine content in R. tetraphylla is
considerably less than that in R. serpentina hence it is of lesser
value than R. serpentina.

[efloraofindia:27178] Re: Saplings of Devdaru

2010-02-03 Thread Nudrat
Hello

Thank you so much Dr. Pankaj for your good wishes. People prefer
Quercus to Deodar because Quercus yields fodder and has better
survival and adaptibility. Whereas Deodar cannot be used as fodder. It
is also a slow grower. The population of Deodar is on a decline as the
environment effects these plants. I had a discussion with people in HP
and they told me that Deodar no longer attains the girth they used to
20 yrs ago.

As for variation in colour so i dont think there is any. As far as my
pics are concerned, the colour might seem different but it is purely
light effect and nothing else.

Hello,

The tree in picture is most certainly not Ficus drupacea as its leaves
are more like those of Ficus benghalensis. The leaves shown in picture
looks more like those of Ficus infectoria or F tjakela. But then
fruits of these two are whitish so its difficult to say which Ficus
this is until more characteristics are available.

[indiantreepix:24139] Re: TOOLS FOR A BOTANIST

2009-11-27 Thread Nudrat
Hello,

This particular mail caught my attention and i was really surprised at
the long list of things that are recommended for a field trip. I am a
plant taxonomist my self and a conservationist too and believe me i
never carried any of these things into a forest. I always had a good
camera with me and a small cutter that would allow me to take sample
for my studies if and when needed.

Why do we need to take samples if plants can be identified thru good
pictures. I remember attending a seminar where sample collection from
the wild was highly discouraged cos we humans tend to take more than
required and that surely has adverse effect on the forest. So i think
we shudnt make it a habit to carry any implements in the forest. These
are my views. people may differ

[indiantreepix:21796] Re: Palmyra palm & strangler figs

2009-10-29 Thread Nudrat

Hello,

The process of ficus strangling the host tree is very slow one and may
sometimes take more than 100 yrs as the plant in actual just takes
support from its host.

[indiantreepix:21477] Re: Which Ficus is this?

2009-10-25 Thread Nudrat

Hello,

There is a possibility that the plant in picture is F. religiosa. F.
religiosa and F.arnotiana are very difficult to differentiate until
the fruits are chkd. I can say this with confidence as i have worked
on germination of these Ficus species. I had consulted Dr. M. R.
Almeida and he told me that it was not easy to differentiate between
the two unless the fruits are studied.
