Jesus Cleanses the Temple Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; and he said, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of robbers". [JOYnet] Sunday Reflections - 3rd Sunday Of The Year In Ordinary Time - January 26, 2003
Dear Friend, We sometimes notice that people have really changed and are not what they used to be. Is it possible to change? Conversion and repentance is the same as change. We know that we are constantly called to repentance. Since we keep slipping back into our old ways, what can really bring about a true conversion in us? Does God expect us to change as well? Have a transforming weekend! -Fr. Jude - --- Sunday Reflections: Third Sunday of the YearRepent or else. ? 26-01-2003 Readings: Jonah 3: 1-5, 101 Corinthians 7: 29-31 Mark 1: 14-20 In the first reading we hear the word of God addressed to Jonah the prophet telling him to go to Niniveh to ask the people to repent. We know Jonah's story - he was a reluctant prophet and did not want to go on this difficult mission, so he went in the opposite direction, wanting to escape the Lord's command, with disastrous consequences. Finally chastened, he went to the people and preached to them. He threatened them and warned them: "Only forty days more and Niniveh is going to be destroyed." He did not expect the people to listen to him and believe him, but the people listened and believed and repented! God accepted their repentance and saved them from the disaster. Strangely, Jonah was disappointed that the people were not punished, upset, that they had repented! We know the point of the Jonah story: God wants all people to repent that their sins may be forgiven and God longs to forgive anyone who repents. Jonah and the Jews of his time thought differently. Since the people of Niniveh had caused a lot of harm to the people of Israel, they thought God should punish them rather than forgive them. When Jonah preached he did not say God would forgive them if they repented he rather threatened them with God's punishment and when God forgave the Ninivites he complained bitterly against God. Jonah is a perfect example of how we so often expect God to act like us and punish those who do not fall in line; those who cause us harm; those whom we cannot see eye to eye with. We believe in justice for others but mercy towards us! But our God is a God of mercy and compassion ever ready to forgive. He is more ready to forgive than we are to repent of our sins. He can take our sinfulness and change it into a moment of grace if we let him do so. Turning evil to good A lady once showed Ruskin a costly handkerchief on which had fallen a large blot of ink. "What a shame!" she moaned. "It is absolutely good for nothing now. It is totally spoiled. Ruskin said nothing but asked to borrow the handkerchief for a day. The next day he handed it to her without a word, and the lady delightedly saw that, using the blot as a starting point, the great artist had designed an intriguing pattern on that corner of the handkerchief. Now it was actually worth more than it had ever been before the blot had disfigured it. Bruno Hagspiel from -Tonic from the Heart in 1000 Bottles Today's gospel stresses Jesus' call to repentance, which is repeated time and again in the gospels: "Repent and believe in the good news, the Kingdom of God is close at hand!" It is the same call that Jonah preached to the people of his time and yet it is different. While Jonah threatened them and warned them of the impending disaster if they did not repent, Jesus on the other hand invites, urges and pleads with every one to turn away from sin, not out of fear of being punished, but for a much higher motive, to enable them to enter the Kingdom of God. We notice that there are two distinct parts to this invitation: 'to repent', that is to break away from sin and its consequences, which is what the word conversion means, and the second part: 'to believe in the good news', namely to accept Jesus' teachings and follow him. Both go hand in hand and one without the other does not make sense. If we are to follow Jesus Christ we have to repent, we have to change, we have to be converted. Conversion means changing one's direction, retracing one's steps and if by sin we have moved away from God then we are called to turn around and walk in God's direction, come closer to him. If we persist in our old ways, then we have not really been converted. For some this conversion is a radical right about turn, for others it is a gradual moving away from doing our thing to doing God's will and living fully for him. This conversion is a life-time process and implies a true change of heart. Sometimes we might be complacent with external peripheral changes but our heart is really not converted. They can't take away my thoughts! A girl had been quite naughty. Because she wouldn't say she was sorry, her mother had punished her by taking away her toys and sending her to bed. When her father came from work he went upstairs to see her, and said he was sure, if she would only apologise, mother would serve her supper and return her
[JOYnet] On fate, Luck, future..etc
Hello Family, I think if we could use the word 'Divine providence' instead of Fate and 'Blessed' instead of lucky,it conveys much . Regarding Manoj's question of approaching some body who could say about past present etc... Jesus has told us ..."For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.-Mat 24:24 Let's see how St.Paul himself dealt with such a situation.. Please read The following experience St.Paul had at Philippi.Let the word of God speak to our heart. It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling.Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, "These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation." She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out at that very moment. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities, - Acts 16:16-19. This is in contrast with the gift of Prophecy given by the Holy Spirit ,which helps to build the church. (Cf : 1 Corinthians chapter 12) The early christians still had so many situations like this ,lets learn how they managed these situationslet these occasions be time for us to preach Goodnews to them...Let them know the truth and the truth alone will let them free. Coversion of Simon the Sorcerer Acts 8:9-13 What happened to Elymas Acts 13:6-12 Conversion of many others who were doing such stuff Acts 19:13-19 For those who have time and want to go deep here are some Biblical references That it was forbidden even from Old Testament times Lev 19:26-28,31; 20:6; Deu 18:9-14 These verses show how it was denounced by OT people Isa 8:19; Mal 3:5 , These verses speak of Astrologers Jer 10:2; Mic 3:6,7 and these about false prophets Jer 14:14; 27:9; 29:8,9; Eze 13:6-9; 22:28; That's all i've for the time being. Hope more people may contribute more. [JOYnet] St. Vincent ( Saint of the Day)
Saint of the Day January 22, 2003 St. Vincent When Jesus deliberately began his journey to death, Luke says that he set his face to go to Jerusalem. It is this quality of rocklike courage that distinguishes the martyrs. Most of what we know about this saint comes from the poet Prudentius. His Acts have been rather freely colored by the imagination of their compiler. But St. Augustine, in one of his sermons on St. Vincent, speaks of having the Acts of his martyrdom before him. We are at least sure of his name, his being a deacon, the place of his death and burial. According to the story we have (and as with some of the other early martyrs the unusual devotion he inspired must have had a basis in a very heroic life), Vincent was ordained deacon by his friend St. Valerius of Saragossa in Spain. The Roman emperors had published their edicts against the clergy in 303, and the following year against the laity. Vincent and his bishop were imprisoned in Valencia. Hunger and torture failed to break them. Like the youths in the fiery furnace (Book of Daniel, chapter three), they seemed to thrive on suffering. Valerius was sent into exile, and Dacian now turned the full force of his fury on Vincent. Tortures that sound like those of World War II were tried. But their main effect was the progressive disintegration of Dacian himself. He had the torturers beaten because they failed. Finally he suggested a compromise: Would Vincent at least give up the sacred books to be burned according to the emperors edict? He would not. Torture on the gridiron continued, the prisoner remaining courageous, the torturer losing control of himself. Vincent was thrown into a filthy prison celland converted the jailer. Dacian wept with rage, but strangely enough, ordered the prisoner to be given some rest. Friends among the faithful came to visit him, but he was to have no earthly rest. When they finally settled him on a comfortable bed, he went to his eternal rest. love + prayers, Joseachayan / Jeddah / Saudi Arabia == Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. "What do you want me to do for you"? He said "LORD, let me see again, Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has saved you" Luke 18 : 41 - 42 _ May God Bless You this Day and Forever _ Reflection To day Jesus Christ is asking us, "what you want me to do for you" ? Let us Lift all our needs, prayer requests towards him with full of faith. The Blind man who received sight because he believed blindly Jesus can give him the sight. Let us think today, Do I have faith / believe on LORD Jesus, as he need ? Once there was a Grandma, she is between 75 to 80 years old. She was doing lots of prayers everyday. There was a tree in her neibhours Courtyard but all it's branches were on our grandma's courtyard's side, and falling it's leaves daily. Grandma was very angry on her neigbour because of this. Once Grandma had an opportunity to participate a retreat, and the talks were mostly on 'forgiveness' and 'faith'. Grandma was remembering the word of LORD that "Have faith in God. Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and throw into the sea', and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you". So Grandma decide that she will ask in the name of Jesus to shift this tree's all baranches to other side. Morning she went to church, and prayed to God, when she back home, she should see that tree's all branches in other side. She came from church with very anxious and saw tree is remaining same as before. Grandma said, "I knew it before, nothing is going to happen". This is a story but it is a thought for us that whether our faith is like Grandma or what ? === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] the heart sees what the eyes can't
dear joyful people in Jesus i just came across this story which lifted my spirits up so much that i wanted to share it with all you precious children of God! Go on, read it! and Praise God! Sometimes we get what we need and not what we want... Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, Someday, I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems and be decorated with intricate carvings. Everyone would see my beauty. The second tree said, Someday, I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of other world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull. Finally, the third tree said,I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest.People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time, and people will always remember me. After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. One came to the first tree and said,This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter, and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest. At the second tree, one of the other woodsman said,This looks like a strong tree. I should be able to sell it to the shipyard. The second tree was happy, because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened, because it knew that, if it was cut down, its dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said,I don't need anything special from my tree,so I'll take this one, and he cut it down. When the first tree arrived at the carpenter's, he was! made into a feed box for animals, placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. Then years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth, and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose, and the tree didn! 't think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said Peace, and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets, and the crowd mocked the man who was carrying it. Finally, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it. The moral of this story is that, when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don't always know what God's plans a! re for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.Sometimes the heart sees what the eyes can't. with love in Jesus Sheril Daniel Grahamstown, South Africa Yahoo!
