KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2. In addition to agreeing with Tobias that kmail needs to handle the unresponsive keyserver better, the default keyserver should be changed if hkp://wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net is not reliable. When following the instructions from Tim on how to change the settings, it seemed like I should be able to add the additional server and save with two servers set. However, if I did that, and then went back to the Edit box the second one had disappeared. After changing to http://keys.gnupg.net the lookup works without remarkable delay.
