This feature adds the necessary support to exploit the dump capture capability provided by Power firmware. With this feature support, the production kernel will register for firmware-assisted dump using RTAS (Runtime Abstraction Service) calls and builds required ELF header which then gets exported through '/proc/vmcore' in the second kernel after crash. This feature improves Power serviceability by making it more robust compared to current kdump mechanism on Linux. Ubuntu 15.04 kernel already includes the necessary code for fadump. The only kernel change needed is to enable CONFIG_FA_DUMP in the kernel configuration. In addition, an update is needed for a script in kdump-tools package. I am not sure about which package is the cause. The screen goes blank and the disk access light goes out, but power is not turned down. (LEDs which normally start blinking stay steady). The system does not respond and has to be powered off completely. My impression is that the risk is higher when suspending after leaving the laptop alone for some time (cron?), and after using the internal "GSM" (UMTS) modem (sierra). (BTW, the broadband connection sometimes fails after successful suspend. In that case disabling network, turning the kill-switch off and on and re-enabling network helps.) My impression is also that the problem may sometimes be triggered by my turning the screen (physical screen only, not the display mode) to use tablet mode. This morning the last syslog message prior to the failing suspend was that the anacron main process had receive the KILL signal. I have had this problem for a long time (I believe also with 9.04), and recently it's been happening quite frequently. I haven't reported it before since it's rather vague where the problem is. I had previsouly had suspend / resume working properly with 12.04 (and previously with 11.10) until around the 10th of April. Now I am unable to resume after suspending. Upon opening the lid or pressing the power button the laptop starts to boot (caps lock and thinklight flash, power button turns on, hard drive is heard to start), then turns off completely (all lights off). After about a second it repeats the process. The screen never turns on / displays any information. It appears to do this continously until you hold the power button down for a while or pull the battery. The computer then boots normally. I am booting using UEFI and have both a normal hard drive and a intel mSATA SSD (310 80GB). The boot device is the SSD. I'm eager to help diagnose and resolve this issue. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1050029] Re: Suspend/ Resume Freezing after a software update
[Expired for linux (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60 days.] ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Expired -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1050029 Title: Suspend/ Resume Freezing after a software update Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: I'm using ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba Satellite E105-S1802 and just recently used update manager to update all of my software. Ever since this update, suspend/restore freezes my system. If I hit the power button and then suspend, the option box doesn't disappear but the system does suspend. The problem comes upon resume, where I can move my mouse but can't click anything (essentially frozen). My system was working fine before this update, is there a way to either (1) fix this problem or (2) revert to my previous settings. If not I'm switching back to windows, this is too big a bug. Within 8 to 10 seconds the machine resumes again with lid still closed. Imidiately opening an closing lid makes suspends the computer and it keeps suspended until lid is opened again. This behaviour is the same when entering a sudo pm-suspend from the terminal. Machine suspends. But resumes after 8 to 10 seconds. Immidiately doing a second sudo pm-suspend, suspends the machine and keeps it suspended. There is one case where the behaviour described above is different. That is in the situation where machine is put into suspend for the first time after a complete reboot. In this case the machine suspends correctly and stays suspended as expected. The problem is consistent and can be reproduced as desribed any number of times. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 329199] Re: Slow swapin speeds after resume from disk
[Expired for linux (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60 days.] ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Expired -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/329199 Title: Slow swapin speeds after resume from disk Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: I hibernate (suspend to disk). On resume the memory image is read back from the swap area at 70 megabytes per second. Then my applications start running and their memory comes back in from swap as well. For a large process like Firefox this takes a long time and Firefox is unresponsive until enough of its working set has been swapped back in. I can run "vmstat 1" and look at the "si" column to see how much data is being brought back from swap per second as well as "bi" to see the total number of blocks coming back in. For the vast majority of the time the numbers are identical meaning only swapped data is coming back in. The swapped data comes back in at around 4 megabytes per second - a small fraction of the 70 megabytes per second from earlier. I usually resort to running "swapoff -a ; swapon -a" which runs at 10 megabytes per second and hence gets me working processes sooner. Since I have 6GB of RAM, I would be very happy on resume from disk for swap to be pre-emptively put back into RAM at high speed. If the swapped data is being page faulted in (ie 4kb each time) then that is a really bad thing after a resume. To repeat this, leave a terminal running "vmstat 1" and run Firefox opening a bazillion tabs and then hibernate. On resume try using Firefox while watching the terminal. This is really a big problem, because it causes data loss for people who have applications open with unsaved data in it. PLEASE, do not release versions that will cause users to lose data. Maybe suspend should be disabled for problematic hardware that will not wake from suspend. Maybe a warning should be shown if trying to suspend. I hope you will make this bug a priority. SATA with Ultra ATA PCI combo card (the problem occurs with or without this installed) Under Preferences>Screensaver>PowerMangement I selected to put the computer to sleep after 1 hour of inactivity. The computer does shutdown as expected after inactivity. To bring the computer back to life I need to press the power button on the front of the case. The computer appears to go through a normal boot sequence and then gets to an Ubuntu screen where it says something like "waking up" at the bottom of the screen with an Ubuntu logo displayed. It does this for a while and then the screen goes blank and nothing I can think of to do will restore the display. The PC is powered up as CD drawers will open etc., but I can't be sure what state the OS is in at this point. Leaving it for an hour or more results in no change - and it does not resume the sleep mode. I'd be happy to send any logs etc. if you can tell me what you need and how to get it. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 395753] Re: Bluetooth and WLAN enabled after resume
[Expired for linux (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60 days.] ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Expired -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395753 Title: Bluetooth and WLAN enabled after resume Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: If I had disabled Bluetooth or WLAN on my notebook and make suspend-2-ram and resume again, they got re-activated. This is a bad behavior for various reasons: 1. Network manager got confused, because it still thinks, that WLAN is inactive - but the WLAN LED is online. 2. I have to disable BT / WLAN again. I don't want to do this over and over. Often, I suspend my computer only for some minutes, just to bring in from one place to another (like walking from my home, to the university - or changing the train). And after that, its annoying to deactivate BT and WLAN again. 3. If I forgot to disable it again, the WLAN chip will consume power of my battery (and perhaps the BT too). It would be better, if the last state got recovered. So if BT or WLAN was deactivated before suspend, it should be deactivated after resume. If it was activated, it should be re-activated. This problem exists still in Jaunty. My hardware is: WLAN: Intel 3945 Bluetooth: Dell Computer Corp. When the screensaver is enabled, and by this I mean it set to start up in X amount of minutes, my display will dim to the lowest or near- lowest setting. Every time I try to brighten it by either setting in KDE or by my laptop FN keys it will convert back to the lowest setting. Interestingly, the brightness sliders in the powersaving programs or the battery widget remain at the highest setting. OK, so the workaround for that was to simply disable the screensaver. However, I soon discovered that OpenGL games such as etracer and neverball would also dim the display upon starting (or even attempting to start; this occured when there was an error with an openSDL package that prevented the game from starting--but that's another separate issue I had dealt with). VLC and Dragon Player both dim the backlight upon loading a movie, as well. Laptop is a Acer Aspire 7720Z, graphics card is Intel GM965 / X3100. [Expired for linux (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60 days.] ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Expired -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930707 Title: System doesn't resume on suspend. Shutdown doesn't complete Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: Version: Ubuntu 11.10 Release 11.10 Package Responsible: Unknown. Possibly the kernel or pm-utils What was expected: System resumes normally after suspend. What happened: When resume is triggered (either by lid opening or key-press) Fan speeds up, and the system appears to freeze. I have to manually power-off (by holding down the power key) and reboot. When the system freezes during resume, emergency key-combinations like ctrl+alt+delete, ctrl+alt+backspace, ctrl+alt+printscr+K dont work. And not even the ctrl+alt+printscr+ R,E,I,S,U,B sequence. Frequency: Everytime i resume Additional Note: Resume worked a while ago, its a recent happening. The changes i made were: Installed the fglrx driver, and uninstalled it. Deepin software center performed an auto-update (possibly) Not sure what updates were applied. Steps to reproduce: 1) Suspend the system 2) Wait for a while after the power button starts blinking 3) Press any key Alternately: 1) Close the lid 2) wait for a while 3) Open the lid. Specifications of my laptop: Manufacturer :HP Series: Pavilion g6 Processor: Intel i5 Graphic card: AMD Raedon (Not sure of further details) Kernel version: 3.0.0-16 (GRUB entry has this. Must be kernel version) Additional Notes: Shutdown freezes the system with ubuntu logo on screen On starting, BIOS shows a thermal shutdown warning ( It was there since i installed ubuntu. Shouldn't be related.) On resume, capslock led is on all the time. LED at network port (Lan cable) blinks. the red-one, presumably indicating data transfer. there's also a white one thats always on when the cable is connected. I use "acpi_backlight=vendor pcie_aspm=force" to make brightness control work and to optimize power consumption. This behaviour is configurable in the BIOS. In my case, I have configured it so that I need to hold the Fn key to access the special functions, but not for the actual F1-12 keypresses. Problem: After a resume from suspend-to-RAM, the behaviour of the keyboard reverts to the factory setting, i.e. Fn key required to be held down to get the F1-12 keypresses. I reckon this is either due to a broken BIOS or perhaps something that wasn't done to restore the correct behaviour after resume. Workaround: Hibernate the machine and resume. I alså tried to upgrade to both kernel 3.1 and 3.2, but no luck 6) Laptopmodel: Clevo w761tun / Zepto M15a ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: pm-utils 1.4.1-8ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-14.23-generic 3.0.9 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-14-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu4 Architecture: amd64 Date: Sat Jan 7 12:26:58 2012 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111012) PackageArchitecture: all SourcePackage: pm-utils UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) This also affects ubuntu 12.04 lts alpha2: (entered manually) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alpha2 Package : pm-utils 1.4.1-9 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-15.24-generic Uname: 3.2.0-15-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 1.91-0ubuntu1 Architecture : amd64 InstallationMedia : Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin" -Release amd64 (20120202) PackageArchitecture :all SourcePackage : pm-utils UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) --- ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.6 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: malin 3227 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: Unity DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=aa05d848-71ef-4351-9944-bb7994a5c2f7 InstallationDate: Installed on 2014-05-07 (211 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Release amd64 (20140417) MachineType: Zepto M15a NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: linux (not installed) ProcFB: 0 VESA VGA ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-24-generic root=UUID=c814c9ea-8492-48e3-b5e1-839076dcefc5 ro acpi_sleep=nonvs quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1024x768-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.13.0-24.47-generic 3.13.9 RelatedPackageVersions: linux-restricted-modules-3.13.0-24-generic N/A linux-backports-modules-3.13.0-24-generic N/A linux-firmware 1.127.10 RfKill: 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no Tags: trusty Uname: Linux 3.13.0-24-generic x86_64 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) UserGroups: adm cdrom davfs2 dip libvirtd lpadmin plugdev sambashare sudo _MarkForUpload: True dmi.bios.date: 06/30/2009 dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies LTD dmi.bios.version: 1.02.23ZC dmi.board.asset.tag: Tag 12345 dmi.board.name: M15a dmi.board.vendor: Zepto dmi.board.version: M15a dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Tag dmi.chassis.type: 1 dmi.chassis.vendor: No Enclosure dmi.chassis.version: N/A dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologiesLTD:bvr1.02.23ZC:bd06/30/2009:svnZepto:pnM15a:pvrM15a:rvnZepto:rnM15a:rvrM15a:cvnNoEnclosure:ct1:cvrN/A: dmi.product.name: M15a dmi.product.version: M15a dmi.sys.vendor: Zepto To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/913091/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
