[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1596216] Re: Black screen on boot; no modeset workaround broken by 16.04
4.8-rc6 does not resolve this issue. Neither did the Oibaf driver PPA, or the AMD Catalyst drivers for 16.04. I have to question this process of just blindly testing the next RC each time one comes out. This problem is related to the 8700P AMD processor (and similar AMD chipsets) and/or the decision to disable the nomodeset kernel option despite it being a long-term workaround for both AMD and Nvidia graphics problems. Unless there is explicit development to address these issues, trying new RCs in the hopes that the issues have been accidentally resolved is a waste of my time, your time as an Ubuntu maintainer, and the time of all the other individuals that have reported similar issues. Is the Linux community really incapable of effectively communicating (or tracking) work on issues reported inside one distro that relate to upstream issues? As a software QA professional, I have to say that this entire process has been disillusioning. I purchased this laptop over a year ago to give myself a dedicated development machine, but this is the second bug I've encountered that makes the machine effectively useless. Worse, this issue is a regression, since the chipset worked just fine with the graphics drivers available in 14.04 through 15. I recognize that sometimes hardware gets left behind by new development, but this is not an old chip. I really want Linux and Ubuntu to be an effective desktop environment. But between poor communication and decisions like removing fglrx and nomodeset that make modern, current hardware *less* effective than it was on older versions, it doesn't seem to be there yet. I'm currently experimenting with using Windows and the Ubuntu bash subsystem as a development environment, and if that proves effective (or at least slightly productive) I'll likely be removing the Ubuntu partition. Until I do that, I'll try to update this once a month or so. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1596216 Title: Black screen on boot; no modeset workaround broken by 16.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: This bug appears to occur in several distros and architectures. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568211] Re: Unable to boot
I saw one report that said that disabling a PCI controller solved the issue as well, but I don't know what in my laptop could be running on that, unless it's the memory card adapter. Do we know that anyone is working on this upstream, or are we just installing builds hoping something will work magically? I bought this laptop ten months ago to be a dedicated development box, and I've gotten about two workdays out of it. I could just fall back to 14.04 at this point with the keyboard fix and at least get stuff done. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568211] Re: Unable to boot
I'm having the same issue. The black screen problem showed up somewhere in the last week of January, as I documented having to use the nomodeset boot parameter in the course of investigating another bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1537308). The nomodeset was a valid workaround for a while, but something in 16.04 has broken it. Adding it to the grub parameters allows me to boot, but the resolution is stuck at 800 X 600. It appears that adding nomodeset causes both the amdgpu code and the radeon code to give up and go home. As near as I can tell from other reports I've found, this is occurring across distros. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1568211 Title: Unable to boot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I upgraded overnight from Wily to Xenial. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1532746] Re: SHIFT, ALT and CTRL problem with HP pavilion 15 ab062nl
I believe this has also provided a workaround for my problems. (I never saw the repeating keys, only intermittent random control characters.) I finally made the change last night and left it running; after about 12 hours I had no bad events. I've occasionally seen the problem take longer than that to start occurring, but only rarely. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1532746 Title: SHIFT, ALT and CTRL problem with HP pavilion 15 ab062nl Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: I've a problem with the keyboard of notebook HP Pavilion 15 ab062nl. the problem is with SHIFT ALT and CTRL buttons of the keyboard. for example when i use ALT-TAB shortcut, after few seconds, the ALT-TAB menu disappear as if i release ALT key, but isn't so. another example is when i navigate on web, when i scroll page with mouse wheel, sometimes the page start to resize, as if i'm pressing CTRL command while scroll, or if i'm writing a text, sometimes, borwser launch shortcut, as if i'm pressing CTRL while i type text, for exaple if i'm typing "b" letter, opens bookmarks... another example is while i'm typing text, if i press SHIFT key and start typing, begins to write uppercase letters and after a while, writes lowercase like I released shift, but i'm still pressing shift. for example if i press SHIFT+s, the result is this: SSs some letters are uppercase, but others are lowercase. i haven't found a solution. the only way to solve momentarily the problem, is pressing for some seconds the only SHIFT key, after that, the problems disappears indefinitely, or until the next restart.
