[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1906476] Re: PANIC at zfs_znode.c:335:zfs_znode_sa_init() // VERIFY(0 == sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db, zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, &zp->z_sa_hdl)) failed

2021-10-10 Thread Nick Moffitt
I ran into this over the past few days, and the zfs-dkms install via
recovery also worked for me, though be warned that you will need to take
careful steps with secureboot to enrol the MOK that this generates for
you.

Bug description:
Since today while running Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute I started getting a ZFS
panic in the kernel log which was also hanging Disk I/O for all
  Chrome/Electron Apps.

I have narrowed down a few important notes:
  - It does not happen with module version 0.8.4-1ubuntu11 built and included
with 5.8.0-29-generic

  - It was happening when using zfs-dkms 0.8.4-1ubuntu16 built with DKMS
on the same kernel and also on 5.8.18-acso (a custom kernel).

  - For whatever reason multiple Chrome/Electron apps were affected,
specifically Discord, Chrome and Mattermost. In all cases they seem
(but I was unable to strace the processes so it was a bit hard ot
confirm 100% but by deduction from /proc/PID/fd and the hanging ls)
they seem hung trying to open files in their 'Cache' directory, e.g.
  ~/.cache/google-chrome/Default/Cache and ~/.config/Mattermost/Cache ..
while the issue was going on I could not list that directory either
  "ls" would just hang.

  - Once I removed zfs-dkms only to revert to the kernel built-in
version it immediately worked without changing anything, removing
  files, etc.

  - It happened over multiple reboots and kernels every time, all my
Chrome apps weren't working but for whatever reason nothing else
  seemed affected.

  - It would log a series of spl_panic dumps into kern.log that look like this:
  Dec  2 12:36:42 optane kernel: [   72.857033] VERIFY(0 ==
sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db, zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, &zp->z_sa_hdl))
failed
  Dec 2 12:36:42 optane kernel: [ 72.857036] PANIC at
zfs_znode.c:335:zfs_znode_sa_init()

I could only find one other google reference to this issue, with 2 other
users reporting the same error but on 20.04 here:
  https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/issues/10971

  - I was not experiencing the issue on 0.8.4-1ubuntu14 and fairly sure
it was working on 0.8.4-1ubuntu15 but broken after upgrade to
0.8.4-1ubuntu16. I will reinstall those zfs-dkms versions to verify
  that.

There were a few originating call stacks but the first one I hit was

Looking at bug#1863261 the depmod error may be a red herring.

The initial deployment boot worked fine, and that was lucky as it
meant I could ssh in and tail /var/log/syslog while it went through
the upgrades and cloud-init steps. But after this it reboots without
  network configuration.

I've attached the logs mentioned above.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1865182] Re: lookup_builtin_file() could not open builtin file '/lib/modules/5.4.0-14-generic/modules.builtin.bin'

2020-03-02 Thread Nick Moffitt
It's still happening:

Mar 2 10:05:37 negret cloud-init[2450]: depmod: ERROR:
../libkmod/libkmod.c:515 lookup_builtin_file() could not open builtin

So I'm not sure why it has trouble!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1745768] Re: system hangs within 10 minutes of logging in and starting browsers

2018-01-31 Thread Nick Moffitt
I managed to identify the problem as hardware, as it coincides with
physical stresses on the laptop. When I plugged in external peripherals
and left the laptop itself alone, the problem did not reoccur.

You can close this bug.

Well of course right after I file this, it hangs. So this may not be

Title:
  iwlwifi restarts randomly in xenial

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Recently installed xenial on a Lenovo Yoga 2-13 (Intel 7260 wifi
card). On wily it worked perfectly, on xenial it regularly appears to
restart the wifi connection (the end result is that I lose any vpn
connections, as they don't seem to notice the restart, but that's
  another issue).

In general use, I get periodic "wlp1s0: WPA: Group rekeying completed"
messages in syslog (and used to get these in wily, too), but now,
after a random amount of time (over the weekend it was several hours,
this morning it was about 10 minutes, so it might be related to the
amount of network traffic) I get "kernel: [13983.248157] wlp1s0:
authenticate with 00:8a:ae:c9:9a:d8" (presumably my wifi router) and
the usual wifi startup stuff including frequency lists, etc.

It also always logs "systemd-udevd[30319]: Process '/sbin/crda' failed
with exit code 249." every time (I'm not sure if this is relevant)

After reading old, but similar bug reports, I've tried changing some
of the module options: "11n_disable=1" and "11n_disable=8", but these
had no effect. I've also tried the older firmware that wily used
  (/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7260-13.ucode), but again, no improvement.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1505564] Re: Soft lockup with "block nbdX: Attempted send on closed socket" spam

2016-01-06 Thread Nick Moffitt
This problem has caused more serious damage recently. When nbd dies and
printk()s like mad, the serial console is not fast enough to display it.

The kernel keeps allocating buffer space for serial output, which we see
as 13G kmalloc-256 or kmalloc-512 kernel threads.

Eventually the OOMkiller tries to free up space, but it can only kill
userspace programs so ultimately the system dies altogether.

This is more dire than mere CPU load or lockup warning messages.

trouble when I select linux-image-3.19.0-28-generic. Occasionally
I'll reboot for updates (such as the recent network manager one) and
forget to go down a build number, and I hit this again shortly after
  reboot.

move the mouse or affect X with the keyboard (including trying to

Title:
system hangs and CPU heats up in -29 but not -28

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I filed this bug against linux-image-3.19.0-29-generic and hope that
  it has attached everything relevant.

With linux-image-3.19.0-29-generic I can only run my thinkpad X240 for
a few hours before I invariably trip over this bug and cause it to
hang, heating up and driving the fan to full speed. I never have this
trouble when I select linux-image-3.19.0-28-generic. Occasionally
I'll reboot for updates (such as the recent network manager one) and
forget to go down a build number, and I hit this again shortly after
  reboot.

The screen remains in whatever state it was in, but I am unable to
move the mouse or affect X with the keyboard (including trying to
switch to a virtual console with Ctrl-Alt-F1). Nothing suspicious
shows up in kern.log after the reboot, but I tend to have to do a hard
power-off to get back to a useful machine so the journal may not be
  fully checkpointed in time.

2014-08-28 Thread Nick Moffitt
Thanks. It does indeed look like this got rid of the lockups in dmesg.
Thanks!

Title:
thinkpad screen dims after unplugging external display, and won't re-
  brighten without leaving X

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I un-plug the external VGA cable from my Thinkpad X200s, the
screen dims. Hitting Fn-Home (the brightness-increase key) does
nothing. Suspending and resuming doesn't reset this, though a reboot
will allow me to use the brightness controls again while in the POST
  and after.

My current workaround is that every time I disconnect the monitor, I
have to C-M-F1 to get to a virtual console, brighten the screen, and
then M-left to get back to X.

2014-03-13 Thread Nick Moffitt
Joseph, your text says the latest v3.13 kernel, but the link takes me to
v3.14. Is that correct?
