I see ok my suggestion is...how about converting that swap
partition back to normal swap using mkswap? If it works (of course,
you need to adjust /etc/fstab accordingly), then ecryptfs is really
the culprit here.

it was rc4, now it's 3.8.0-rc5. My fstab:

#
proc/proc   procnodev,noexec,nosuid 0   0
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=187122e0-ad4a-4b27-8ec3-bb9217f162d0 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
#UUID=d1313f27-8580-490e-bec3-55ac44d64f0e noneswapsw
   0   0
/dev/mapper/cryptswap1 none swap sw 0 0

ecryptfs should be the problem. I use an encrypted home and swap. "free"
says Swap: 0 0 0.

Please don't do top posting

Which rc kernel version do you use? and can you show us the entries of
your /etc/fstab?

Sorry, that wasn't clear. Nope, I just have one distro: Lubuntu. I
installed a rc-mainline-kernel and when I boot into it, there is no
swap. On the distro-kernel there of course is.

thanks

and on other (lubuntu) not? Looks like missing fstab entry too me
