Re: KRnet> KR>Re: The 'Plans' Quandary

2022-04-10 Thread Vincent Meyer, MD

Hi Folks,

When I bought my plans I had everything scanned in high-resolution. I
have files of my
plans set in both pdf and (If i remember correctly) bmp formats. Cost a
couple hundred
bucks to scan and convert everything, but since I figured one spilled
cup of coffee or

paint in the shop would make them unreadable, this was my backup.

IF it turns out that open sourcing and updating the plans is a project
for real, I
could make these available to the group. Save a couple hundred bucks in
startup

costs.

Greetings

Janette's decisions not with standing; "Open Sourcing'' the plans under
one of the licenses as suggested by Dave would allow a Community effort to
revitalise the plans. CAD guru's can re-work teh plans and "editors" can
re-work the build manual and other supporting documentation and the publish
it all under the BSD or similar license. Mark's idea of releasing it all
under a new name like "FreeBird" would be great

I for one would be willing to help edit, clean-up & modernise soft copies
of the current build manual and generate some of the eletrical schematics
etc (I am no CAD anything!). I also have tools to create tiled PDFs of any
large CAD drawings to even printing can be down on an home printer and then
taped together to form the large-format plans.

KR>Re: Barrel roll

2022-03-08 Thread Sid Wood
Most KR-2 aircraft are rated for negative G for the airframe. The classic
Barrel Roll is intended to be a positive G maneuver. There is always a
possibility of inadvertently going negative G or becoming disoriented and
loosing control of the aircraft. Most KR-2 aircraft are not built with
inverted fuel systems that incorporate "flop-tubes" in the fuel tank,
sealing vents, or pressure carbs. Engine oil systems generally do not
provide continuous oil lubrication while inverted unless fitted with oil
scavenger pumps and crankcase sealing.
Pilot and passenger seat belts need to be rated and properly used for
inverted flight. Instruction and endorsement by a qualified flight
instructor is highly recommended. Most countries it is a legal requirement.

Stay safe.

Hi KR friends,
I am not having the intention to do heavy acrobatics but I really want to
learn to do a Barrel roll.I have acrobatics experience so that should not be
the problem.

Someone out there who knows the entry speed to start with the manoeuvre?

We've had some serious problems with the folks who "host" the KRnet list
latelythe folks with the big servers who host many other lists as
well. The primary developer died suddenly about a year ago, and support
has been a ship adrift ever since. It's been impossible to add new
subscribers for months now, and the new owners don't seem to know how to
fix it. It also has a painful graphical user interface that's sorely
lacking. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that today we'll
be transitioning to another email list hostthis time the one with
the best reviews, and a proven history. We (John Bouyea and I) don't
expect any hiccups, but if you send a message and don't see it, it may
show up later in the day, or send it again later.

More than likely, y'all will never know it happened from an email
standpoint, but we're going back to "Mailman2" (the industry standard)
from the current hassle of Affinity/Empathy sites that were implemented
as part of the "bleeding edge" Mailman3 system that we're now on. So
the email archive and other account administration stuff will revert
back to what we used 10 years ago. I don't know yet if you'll have to
go back into that system and set up an account and password to set
options such as digest mode or not, but as we learn we'll let you know
what the process is. We're KR builders here.simple is good!

Thanks,

Well done mark. I thought I was going ok with 3 forced landings
Two PSRU gearbox both made runway

with nose wheel and left main collapsing and two of the 3 prop. Blades.

It’s all fun as long as you walk away. So practice will help with a better
outcome

Side slipping ( left wing down for better vision) in my KR2 was at 80 kts. It
really lost some height, kick in right rudder and level, perfect short field
landing. Just needs a few goes

Here's my (checkered) record of deadstick landings:

broken crank - put it on a runway
broken crank - put it on a runway
flywheel bolt broke - put it on I-65
broken crank - put it in a hay field
blown oil line - put it on a runway
sucked valve - put it in a bean field

KR>Re: Engine failure video

2022-03-01 Thread Mark Langford
I know I sound like a broken record, but engine failures like this are
the reason I usually either fly at 9500' or 10,500'. And I don't do the
"standard" 500 fpm descents, I wait until I know exactly where the
airport is, and as anybody who's flown with me will tell you, I chop the
throttle, dive into the pattern, and glide all the way to the runway.
I'm usually a bit high on final, so quite often slip it hard to bleed
off speed before I get to the threshold, and even over the runway if
needed. I try to hit the end of the runway, regardless of how long it
is, just for the practice, and because my home runway is short and
narrowand that's my habit.

Learning to slip your KR is a great way to bleed off lots of speed when
it's clear you'll be too hot on approach. Practicing at 5000' or so
gives plenty of room if you stall it, but you'll know when you're really
close to stall, and learn from that alsonote the indicated airspeed
and remember it, and add it to your airplane flight manual. Try the
same in steep banks and low speeds, and note the airspeed. You'll gain
a lot of insight into what you can do and what you can't do. Practice
at least every year or so. I'll never understand why some people have
never stalled their KRs, given the important data point gained from that
simple exercise.

It's also vital to practice engine-out landings, which I do almost every
flight. As I find a destination airport, I'll get to the point where I
think I may or may not be able to make it, chop the throttle, and then
make it work. I very rarely have to give it any throttle at the end.
Because of this practice, I'm a pretty good judge of nailing a landing,
which is especially important if you have to put it down on a road or in
a field somewhere.

Obtaining glide ratio for your airplane is important too, so if the
engine quits on a cross-country, you can choose the best airport that
you know you can reach, based on your glide ratio, best glide speed, and
the wind direction at the time. With my Corvair, I obtained the glide
ratio from 10,000', both with prop at idle, and engine switched
completely off, and timing the descent to the runway. There was no
discernible difference between the two. The Corvair has a high
compression ratio and a short prop, so it doesn't windmill, and you
can't restart the engine even in a 200 mph diveeven if it would run.
Best glide speed for N56ML turned out to be 85 MPH true air speed,
yielding a 11.5:1 glide ratio.

Another benefit to flying high is that it's normally a lot smoother up
there! Yes, wind speeds are higher, but it all works out, in the long
run, because the extra safety is worth it

2022-02-28 Thread John Bouyea
Jeff,
Nice post! This guy handled his engine failure so well and smoothly I didn't
even hear about it. And I live 3nm away!
Langford always flies at 9500 or higher. After seeing this graceful example
video, I need to spend more time climbing to altitude...

If you know how high you want the prop hub, how long does the gear have
to be to put the prop hub that high with the aircraft level?  Level the
aircraft with the current gear and see what adjustment has to be made.

I would hate to impose additional work on anyone let alone Mark or John, but I
am wondering (out loud) if we had access to a server that had the bandwidth to
share larger files. Back in the day when we first started with the internet,
files were smaller, Today, these things are a behemoth in comparison. Just
thinking out loud.

Jeff, you are most likely right regarding where I got the file from. It was
several years ago that I downloaded it and have modified it every time I
changed my mind as to how to design and operate the controls and instruments on
my KR. I am on my third iteration of a total rebuild of my instrument panel.
Dear lord when does it stop?

I am going to make an assumption and say that we put those files online to
share them...
Keep building...

Rob Schmitt authored a very nice POH for his KR. I blatantly copied and edited
it to create the POH for my KR. I had it posted on my web site for years, but
removed it at the request of the new owner of my KR as there were some
inconsistencies between the POH and some of what the Canadian Authorities
wanted to see in the POH. Both mine and Robs have been widely shared, which is
likely where Luis got his copy. If you want a copy, just drop me a line OFF

Stef,

Good luck.  Not sure what you inspector is looking for but the blank
document will tell him absolutely nothing about your airplane.  Max
gross weight (structure designed G load) and C.G. envelope are not on
the form and  he learns nothing.  If done properly he should accept your
numbers if you calculate them on a plain sheet of paper.  All he should
need is the C.G. range of the aircraft expressed in percent of mean cord
or distance from a given datum.  This info is not on the form if that's
what he is looking for.  That's in the front of the plans book and to be
meaningful, that C.G. range is for the original RAF48 airfoil. I'm not
aware that the range for the new airfoil was ever determined or
published.  (don't even hint that to the inspector) .  The numbers for
the original airfoil were used and proven to be acceptable with flight
testing.  This is no different than arguing with your mother-in-law.
Tell her what she wants to hear and separate on good terms.

I calibrated the fuel senders in an RV10 for a friend of mine. It used
float type senders in the wing to a Skyview 10" flat screen.  30 gallon
tanks were calibrated in 2 gallon increments. A 5 volt signal changed
only a few tenths of a volt as each 2 gallon was added. Because the
wings had a slight dihedral the senders topped out at 21 gallon hitting
the top surface of the wing at the root.  In this system the Skyview
indicates accurate gallons from 21 down to empty and above 21 gallon it
indicates 21+ gallons. Each system has it's own limitations.     I
believe that the only "requirement" for a fuel gauge is to report
correctly at "empty".

The best system is to know what you're starting with and use an accurate
fuel flow device or record time, mentally or on paper, using engine burn
rate.  In the Tripacer years ago I could start with full tanks, fly of 2
or 3 hours, and when refueling I could estimate to within a few tenths
of a gallon what was left in the tank.

In 455 JS, I use a sight gauge, in the center of my instrument panel,
for my forward deck fuel tank. I also use a Teflon lined ,stainless
steel, braided line direct to a mechanical oil pressure gauge.
Neither of these require battery power. As Larry Flesner says, " Your
results may vary ".

KR>Re: fuel senders and gauges?

2022-02-11 Thread Jeff Scott
Some of this depends on what you are going to use to display your fuel
quantity. For example, a simple gauge and a capacitance type sending unit can
be calibrated at the transducer to read full and empty correctly, but are
non-linear in between. I replaced several Westach probes in my KR as the
ground side of the capacitance probe kept losing contact with ground reference.
They were just poorly made. I finally fixed the issue by pulling the probe
and wrapping the ground wire and the ground side of the probe with .020 safety
wire and zipping it down tight.

The float type gauges seem to be pretty durable, but I think everyone at some
point in time has had a car with a failed gauge, so they do fail.
Additionally, sometimes it takes a reiterative process of bending the float arm
to get them to read full and empty correctly, and like the capacitance gauges,
they are non-linear when they just measure the height of the fuel in the tanks.

However,if you are using an electronic instrument display such as the
integrated Garmin, Dynon, JPI, EI, or other displays, you can typically add
fuel to each tank one gallon at a time and tell the display after each gallon
is added until it's full. Then the display takes the non-linear transducer
readings from your 1 gallon increments and creates a linear display of fuel
quantity, either in gallons remaining or E-1/2-1/2-3/4-F. This can be done
with the output from either capacitive or float type transducers.

It's always important to have your tanks display empty correctly and you can
leave the full mark subject to interpretation. My RV has float type
transducers with electronic averaging, so they don't constantly bounce up and
down and are stable in flight. However, the calibration was not completed
correctly, so they only display just over 3/4 when they tanks are full. But
they do indicate empty correctly, and that is what is important to me. If I
were to integrate an electronic display in the future, I could leave those same
transducers in the tanks and just calibrate the display as I fill the tanks in
1 or 2 gallon increments, and would end up with an accurate, linear display of
remaining fuel with full and empty in the correct places.

2022-02-11 Thread Great Western Airsports
Ha, ha, I'm not going to teach you to suck eggs when it comes to oil pressure
and yes, they fail every couple of hundred hours - when they do & so long as
oil temperature isn't rising, I complete the flight whether instructing or not.
Upon landing it gets replaced due to digence & potential paranoia, usually
USD50 or less from a non Rotax supplier, maybe abit more from 'Spruce & Spec'.

I've had good reliability from their temp senders and their fuel senders which
is what you originally asked about, once setup, just forget in my
experience(bad reading are usually a forgotten & corroded grounding). As far as
I recall, we generally use VDO Vision instruments in aircraft, ' Spruce & Spec'
will give you part numbers, eBay does the rest without warranty.

Yep, that's exactly what I used on N56ML. Having been a VW fanatic
since before I could drive, I'm a big fan of Bosch, VDO, Hella, etc, so
I installed a VDO 226-001 sending unit in my right tank. It failed with
just a few hundred hours of flying.

I've had much worse problems with VDO oil pressure senders, both on 56ML
and 971JF. They get a bit whacko and start fluctuating wildly, almost
always reading lower than actual oil pressure, so I get nervous and
install a new one, which works for another hundred or two hours until it
happens again. I have a box with about seven dead pressure sensors in
it, and one day tested them with regulated air pressure and they were
all way off or dead entirely. And no, they're not mounted directly to
the engine, I've always fastened them to non-vibrating surfaces like oil
filter adapter, which is bolted to the firewall.

No more input from anybody else? Nobody has a fuel level sensor with
500 hours on it that you'd swear by?

If anybody's interested, see http://www.n56ml.com/wingtank.html for more
on how I did the tanks in N56ML. I still think that was a pretty good
way to do it, other than not making the fuel sensor easily replaceable.
I could have done that by providing a mounting hole and an access
panel in the wing, but eventually I just used a fuel totalizer, which I
reset after filling up. I used a 6 minute timer to transfer fuel from
the left tank to the right tank, which was half the tank. On 891JF I
use a "calibrated" paint stick to check before each flight, but if I'm
going anywhere other than local, I just fill it up before I leave, and
fill it up again on the way back, and call it good enough. I plan for 4
gph (but usually throttled back and doing better than that) with a 14
gallon tank.

KR>Re: fuel senders and gauges?

2022-02-11 Thread Mark Langford

Brad at Great Western Airsports wrote:

2022-02-10 Thread John Bouyea
I think the separator is better than an oily bottom skin.
Mine is very effective at removing mist from the breather line that collects
in a bottle. I discard the fluid that appears as it often has moisture

Subject: KR>fuel senders and gauges?

Has anybody had good luck with fuel senders and gauges? If so, what
brand, part number, etc? I've been through several iterations, and
almost all failed way earlier when they should have. Even the "low
fuel" senders which simply tell if there's fuel or not don't seem to
last very long. If I've learned nothing else from my plane building
experience, it's don't assume a sender will last forever and build it
into the tank.make it replaceable!

Thanks,

My "capacitance" senders and gauges have been reliable for 15 years
except for the sender to tank gasket.  I don't recall the manufacturer
but guessing Westach.  The tank shape and size will determine if they
are appropriate or not.  My probes are 7 feet long and extend from the
wing attach point to the outboard end of the wing.  My tanks are not
linear so the gauges are not linear but close enough for reference.  I
guess no moving parts other than the needles on the gauge helps with
reliability.

Thanks for sharing.  The photos of the ocean reminded me of our family
trip to Florida from the midwest.  My wife had never seen a large body
or water, the biggest being the Mississippi river.  On a bus tour at
Cape Canaveral  the bus crossed over the levee and my wife saw the ocean
for the first time.  Her response was "IT'S BLUE" which caused all 50 or
so people on the bus to turn and look our direction.  I'm sure they must
have been thinking "where has this women been hiding".  Ah.the

2022-02-09 Thread Mark Langford
I met Allen Buzza at Serpentine Airport back in 2007, on a business trip
to Perth. I was there working on a lightweight "heavy fuel" 2-stroke
engine for a UAV contract. I saw Allen's gorgeous KR2, which he had to
rebuild after the side hinged canopy opened on takeoff, killing the lift
on the right wing and resulting in a stall. He'd rebuilt with it hinged
at the front to prevent that from happening again, although we know now
that even forward hinged canopies can be a problem if not latched.
While I was there, Allen showed me his fuselage sides that he'd just
finished up for his new KR2S. I was "taken under the wing" of a pilot
named Graham, who flew me around to various airports, introduced me to a
LOT of homebuilders and their projects, and generally showed me a
fantastic time on the several weekends that I was there. There are
photos of Allen's very nice KR2, the KR2S he was building, and lots of
other projects and airplanes that I'd never seen before, as well as some
Australian scenery. See

We you know us regular five or six KR pilots will fly in to OSH. The
big question is how many other folks will do their best to be fly their
KR this year? EAA has been kind enough to let us park right in front of
Homebuilder Headquarters for at least the last 15 years or so. You don't
have to reply to the list, just commit yourself to flying your KR there.
We usually fly in on Saturday or Sunday, in plenty of time for the KR
Forum, which will likely be Monday July 25th at 11:30. We'll see y'all
there

I am busy getting “WunderBird” finished. If there is any way my luck holds out,
there is a slim chance of making it. It will be raw as in no interior cosmetics
done nor a great paint job. However, that would give folks the chance to see a
KR before it is completed.

Look out 2022 KR Gathering in Mt Vernon !!!

KR>Re: Free electrical drawing program -test

2022-02-02 Thread John Gotschall
So there are no less than "a lot" of electrical, architectural, and 2d and
3d drawing programs.

That's great.

Most of my hobbies do not include "valuable trade secrets", but a few do.

For those who might have saleable tech: those folk ought not, ever, store
their development information on any computer with an internet connection.
This requires "standalone software" run on local cpu only.

And for sure any program that "stores data securely and remotely" ("on our
secure servers"), as "remotely" is synonymous with "public domain".

Don't share your saleable data.

On the other hand I am happy to store my data that I wish public on those
platforms.

they don't come through due to their size.  I gave the Dropbox address

like cookies, chocolate chip, my favorite.  Anyway, I've tried
downsizing to see if it goes through.  Current size is 236 KB's.

I'm using the schematic of my alternator output select switch as a
test.  You can see why learning and using the software Luis suggested
might be a bit time consuming.  I may play with it a bit for fun.

I wired / drew the circuits in one step so I didn't have to remember
anything.  The simple circuits I wired out of my head and then inserted
the info as I went. i.e, circuit breaker #, TB pin #, etc..  The more
complicated circuits like the speed brake I made a rough drawing, did
the wiring and inserted the info as I went.  Whatever works.

You're right.  If I wired something and then walked to the workbench and
back I had already forgotten terminal board pin #, ck breaker #, etc.

Yup Larry, when u mentioned residential detector, I vaguely recalled some
issue with them, and that was it but I just didnt connect the dots until
you posted this discovery. In my house I use the kind with a digital
readout which I believe are instant as far as the readout even if they dont
alert until a while later...

But for flying would use the one linked...

It will make a believer of you though. Unfortunately, it's over an
hour long! If you're not an EAA member, you probably shouldn't be
building an airplane (the video stash is incredibly educational about
all aspects of homebuilt construction. ~$50 a year.

The link above doesn't paint a very good picture of the little yellow
buttons, although arguably, they are better than nothingboth Joe
Horton and I have gained useful information from them, but they are
nowhere near as informative or sensitive as real detectors like the Tocsin3.

I've emailed Doug for a better version of his story, and will forward
that when I get it.

That whitish-grey film seen anywhere in the vicinity of an exhaust
component is a sure sign of an exhaust leak.  Exhaust fumes are the only
thing that produce that color on an engine. Check carefully the areas
where the pipes connect to  the engine and any slip or other joints in
the pipes.  Welded spots are a good source for leaks.  Don't give
unquestioned trust to stainless pipes either.  Two failures recently,
one a crack at a weld "ring" joint (that pipe is in some farmers field
somewhere) and the other was two small holes, irregular in shape, half
the size of your pinky finger nail, in otherwise solid pipe.  Looked
like a defect in the pipe.

If you buy one of those cardboard detectors don't forget to remove the
plastic cover.  DUH.Larry, remove the plastic..

KR>Re: PIREP: Exhaust System Failure -> CO Hazard

2022-01-26 Thread Mark Langford

I didn't have 42 minutes to kill watching that slow-moving video, but
"our own" Doug Steen had a similar experience in his Dragonfly (I
believe it was) decades ago, unconscious, running out of fuel over
Florida, and crashing (horizontally, at least) into Florida somewhere.
I'll let him tell the story. He's now flying a Tailwind.

A few months ago, there was a presentation on CO detectors, by EAA or
Aircraft Spruce, I forget now, but the bottom line was that the TOCSIN 3
Cockpit Monitor was the detector to buy. I went online during the
presentation, and they were already sold out (I'm a slow thinker), but I
now have one and fly with it. The other day I was running the
kerosene-fired torpedo heater in the hangar, and wondered if I was in
danger of CO poisoning, so I turned it on. Zero ppm, so I'm safe there!
My point is, they are nice to have. The little yellow buttons you can
buy for a few bucks are all not entirely useless, but with some age,
they get that way. It's $169 well spent, in my book.

I'll see if I can dig up that video, which involves another exhaust
leak, undetected, and led to this video on best choices for CO detectors.

2022-01-25 Thread John Bouyea
And of course, http://KRGathering.net has the details for the KR aspect of
our side of the joint event, running at the same time as the Light Sport
Expo Jeff wrote about below.

If one reads the web site at , it would
appear Chris has arranged for a free shuttle service running between "The
Strip" in town and the airport. This should solve a lot of issues for you
folks that might want to fly in, but don't like getting stranded without
transportation. This should be a good event.
The Light Sport Expo runs concurrently with the KR Gathering in Mt Vernon
(KMVN) from Thurs, Sept 8 - Sun Sept 11.

 Gary:
Larry is best to answer this question since he did give me the dates but I
believe that the information on the video is correct because the airport
manager at KMVN suggested that we co-mix the two events. I may be wrong in my
interpretation of the conversation but I believe that's what was said.

KR>Re: Taylor monoplane and KR1 and KR2

2022-01-21 Thread John Umbach via KRnet
The underlying wood structure is virtually identical.

Taylor Monoplane

KR-1

KR-2

Where they diverge is the construction of the wings, tail, and upper fuselage,
as stated by another poster. I’m not certain about the spars. Nevertheless they
do the same job and carry similar weights.

I would suppose that if you started with a set of Taylor Monoplane plans and
had an idea where you wanted to end up then Taylor Monoplane plans would be
suitable to build a KR type airplane.
