[lace] Bobbin Lace mascot

I didn't know that the hedgehog is meant to be the mascot for bobbin
lacemakers. Have I had my head in the sand for 25 years or is it only the
mascot of
American bobbin lace makers?

But this has explained a small mystery to me that I had been vaguely curious
about! In other words, why there is a cartoon about a hedgehog in the IOLI
Bulletin.

[lace] Lace pillow maker? on ebay

2006-05-26 Thread Jean Nathan
This is an intriguing description for an item on ebay. Firstly does the
seller really mean "pillow maker"? Secondly, where in England would it have
been used? I always thought it was the large bolster for Bucks point or
Bedfordshire, or the small ball-shaped Honiton pillows that were used - any
cloth and stuffed with readily available straw so it was cheap and easy to
make.

And I'm sure the "original" retail wouldn't be $350.00. For a start, sold in
England, the price would be in pounds or guineas (1GBP 5 pence), and it
certainly wouldn'd have started ife at that kind of price.

Rare antique English lace pillow maker. 9 3/8 inches x 12 inches x 7 1/2
inches tall. Original retail $350.00

And what is that around the roller?

It is a spanish "mundillo", a pillow based on the
french pillows, not used by professional lacemakers,
but by ladies who made lace for their dowry or the
church.

 Original retail $350.00

350 pesetas??? >

> And what is that around the roller?

Somebody's strange idea of decorating? The very top
is a pincushion, lace is made on the roller (here,
there is not even a pricking underneath) and the
bobbins are supported by the padded square underneath.

There are several different types of mundillos - in
this one, the finished lace falls into the box, some
have drawers in the back for the lace and a drawer in
front for extra thread, pins, bobbins etc. This one is
very simple compared to most, and most probably
homemade.

Greetings from sunny Spain - please send rain - Eva

Thanks Eva. I see someone has told the seller because it is now described as a
"RARE ANTIQUE SPANISH MUNDILLO PILLOW LACE MAKER" and the description has been
altered.

I think it should read - Lace maker's pillow.

It's a piece of Irish crochet. Well it's lace, and it's on a lace pillow.
Could have been tatting instead. You know, they make tatting with bobbins
on a pillow!!! I've met dozens of people when I've been demonstrating
bobbin lace whose grannies did tatting "just like you're doing. She made
alter cloths and table cloths too."

As lace makers our mission in life must also be to inform as well as to
educate and entertain. Does this sound a bit like the remit for the BBC?

Evidently a universal problem:

Last summer when I was demonstrating bobbin lace at the Washington State
Fair, a woman came up to me almost breathless with enthusiasm. "Look," she
said to her friend, "My father used to do that!"

I replied, "Your father made bobbin lace?!?!"

She said, "No, he tatted!"

aw that's charming ;)
My favourite was the guy in work gear who watched me for awhile when
I was demonstrating at the community museum. We chitchatted about the
weather then he said, "well, I'll leave ya to yer knittin' " - I just
chuckled. He came by again and in passing remarked that his great-aunt
used to knit too. She used a needle and thread. :)))
I know what he meant - a task involving stringy yarn and some sort of
tool by a female member of the family was "knittin' "
I think a lot of people define tatting broadly, like that, as well ;)
