RE: [lace] Re: [lace] books vs kindle

2013-05-25 Thread Angel Skubic
I have the nook reader and use both the nook and kindle app on my iPhone. I
love reading on my phone because I can read in the dark but love the nook
book (black and white flat no glare) during the day. Yes I have the Nook
clip on lights for reading in the dark but they do glare and the batteries
are not friendly to people like me who can spend hours reading in the dark.
I tend to run the light batteries down. My son has been using my nook's
charger for his HTC Evo phone because the charger cords are identical and he
lost his HTC Evo charger. I told him he could use it if he was sure to plug
in the nook when he wasn't using it but he finds it inconvenient to run back
and forth into my room to get the cord (sigh) Wonder what he would think if
I just took it back??
Wishing I had the iPad because I could keep my piecework magazines on it. I
do keep my Queen Susan Shetland lace shawl pattern (knitted lace) on the
iPhone but it is so small it is of very little use really (and the Queen
Susan Shetland Shawl has just a zillion charts) The pattern book itself is
pdf and 76 pages. (yes, that is for only 1 shawl) It is nice, though, if I
have a question about something and want to read a section of the pattern
book. (usually I take a printed chart in a plastic sleeve to use when I knit
on the go) One chart, however, doesn't give you the research notes of the
people who spent ages literally creating the charts for this lost shawl
that was preserved in only 1 picture in a lace museum. Having the pdf on my
phone is handy when you get into something that you question and want to see
what they recommended or did themselves.

Gabriele,
Kindle is a brandmark and is connected with amazon. And this is in my opinion a
problem, you can bye e.books only from them. There excist several other
e-readers like mine from Sony. Than you are free to bye where you want. The
e.reader from Thalia are also connected with Thalia.
And if you have a i-Pad or a i-Pad Mini your are bound on Apple.
But if you want to buy one take one who has e-ink system you can't see color
than but the script is perfect. Newer models have an integrated light, Sony
offers a little lamp you can pin on the reader.
Hope this helps.

I chose the Kindle (black white only) because I liked the non-reflective
screen. It seems easier on my eyes

Thanks, Clay,
that was what I forget to write. And there ia another fine thing, but perhaps
only in Germany. With some e-readers one could lend e-books from an
organization I can't find the name so quick. But for Sony doesn't exist an App
yet.

I also meant to say that when I fall asleep and hit myself in the face with the
iPad it hurts more than when I do that with even a hardback book.

Just a question on this thread because I wonder: Is Kindle a
synonymous for any eBook reader or do you all really use Kindle?

I myself decided for a Sony (mainly for junk food books).

Re: [lace] Re: [lace] books vs kindle

2013-05-20 Thread The Lace Bee
I have an iPad and iBooks tend to be pdf in format for this reader. However, I
was able to download a free kindle app from the AppStore to allow me to access
kindle books.

I think that amazon have realised that they need to make their ebooks available
to other platforms so they opened up access. However, if you have bought a
ebook reader (such as kindle) rather than a tablet (such as an iPad) it is
unlikely that you will be able to add software to read other formats. This has
been one of the reasons people looked at buying tablets.

However, WH Smiths in the UK have their own ebook reader kobo which you can buy
for 1/10 of the cost of a tablet such as an iPad. It is that cheap that it the
cost of 4or 5 hardback books which makes people think that it is worth buying.

But I also use my iPad to access e-ink version of my print magazines such as
good food, gardener's world and knitting and crochet magazines which are not
always available on other platforms (or ebook readers)
