[lace] IOLI Arachne Lunch

2011-08-02 Thread lizlace
About 35 people turned up for the Arachne lunch today, and it was lovely to
meet Names , and find out they are Real people!!!
There was lots of chatter, and lots of laughter, and a Lot of friendship and
good will!!

Jeri Ames had a Wonderful spider hat on, and there were other spiders around
sitting on shoulders etc!
A lot of fun. Thank you to the organizers.

Regards from
Liz in Melbourne, Oz, - currently in Washington DC.! - and having a
Ball!!! :)

[lace] Support pins etc.

2017-02-05 Thread lizlace
I see no problem with using support pins if you need them and if they help you
get your lace looking how you want it. I am sure the Öld-timers”would have
used whatever they could to assist in making the lace.

I also use coloured pens to mark my prickings before I put the contact on
them. I find that helps, too – Who cares – no-one else sees the prickings,
and if they do – so what?!!! (You all know I am rebellious and go
“radical” every now and again!!! ) I worked a fairly dense Beds piece –
with Overlapping 9 pin edge, and when I first looked at the pricking and tried
to follow the lines of the plaits I could see where there might be a problem
if I wasn’t concentrating well, - so marked one ‘loop’ of the edge in
black, and the overlapping one in red – and did that all around the pattern.
It worked beautifully – I knew exactly where I was the whole time. The
trails were marked in green, and I think the cloth stitch pattern bits were
blue, -- whatever – it all helped me make the lace Enjoyably (which is the
whole point!) When you have a forest of pins it is sometimes hard to see what
is what, -- so get out the coloured pens and get some marks there before you
start, so you can enjoy the journey.
Who will ever know you marked the pricking first?!! - and anyone who finds
out will most probably think you Very Sensible!!!

Thank you for that book review on the new Korella book, Jeri. It looks like
another great book.

Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz.. --where we had 35mm rain last evening
(1⅜inches) - the first good rain for Ages!

[lace] Magazines

2017-02-16 Thread lizlace
I received the Needle ‘n’ Thread magazine of the Guild of Needlelaces this
morning. I have not had a chance to read it yet – That is a bedtime treat!!

However, I have not had the Lace Guild magazine yet – and I have not heard
of any other Aussie getting it either, so it looks like we will have to wait
a bit longer, for the Postal service to get them sorted and delivered!

But having been the one to ask if we could be told when the magazines start
circulating, I thought I better mention the Needlelace one!!

Regards from Liz in warm, sunny Melbourne, Oz.

feast of reading and pretty pictures to drool over!!
Congratulations to all the successful lacemakers who submitted work for the
Assessments. Very well done to you all.

[lace] Lappets

2017-02-09 Thread lizlace
Alice – I remember you wearing lappets at one (or 2) of the IOLI
conventions. I seem to remember you had a different one from your collection,
each day! Everyone was looking out for you to see what you were wearing that
day – lace-wise!!
Next Convention I went to, I wore my Beds Dress Cap (featured on the cover of
Barbara Underwood’s, Beds Lace book!) I did mine in navy polycotton – I)
I have white hair, so a white lace cap would not show up – navy shows up
well!!!, and 2) Polycotton, although rotten to work with, at least never
creases, - so I can haul it out of my bag, or suitcase, and it is ‘ready to
wear”!!!
I then made a mauve cap working from the same outline/shape, but in Knotted
lace! The 3 tails at the back were a challenge for me – so it was a good
learning piece!!!
I must bring them along – if we can organize our trip over there again this
year!

I worked the neck tie from Mincroff & Marriage book and it always gets nice
remarks, and last year I saw it made in pale colours – multi-coloured, and
it was Stunning. A lot is the shape of the ends – I think it may have
originally been lappet ends.

Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz, where we have been having a heat wave.

[lace] RE: Writing to the list.

2017-01-17 Thread lizlace
Thank you Jeri, and Avital, who sent to me privately about the correct address
for the list. I have always been using the Arachne one, - except for this
once, when the Arachne one was rejected. I have no idea why my email had all
those weird signs in it. I hope it is not a permanent issue.

I am now trying again, to see what happens this time!

I am using the default system in W.10 for my mail, and I do Not like it. –
Maybe it is because it is so different to what I have been used to, - but this
has everything hidden – no contacts list I can access, and hides messages
– (it seems to sort them into subject order, and hides them behind the first
one, and I miss some of the hidden ones, I think. This is why I will be
staying with the Digest, - I get them all in order!!

Regards from Liz. in sunny, but cooler (thankfully) Melbourne, Oz.

[lace] Magazine in the Post.

2017-04-19 Thread lizlace
Thank you Jean, for alerting us to the IOLI Bulletin that is now (Hopefully)
in the post to us all.

Sorry I am so late replying – I got ‘waylaid” and then forgot!!

I watch out for the Postie each day, but so far he has only brought Bills and
Junk Mail, -- no nice magazine!

However, being an Optimist, - I live in hope!! : )

2017-04-23 Thread lizlace
My IOLI Bulletin & Handbook arrived this morning, -- Hooray!!
So I have some good “Mental Health” therapy/reading tonight! 😊

How do people manage to survive without doing any craft work? I had a
neighbour whom died of boredom,, I think! That won’t happen to me – or
any of you, either, I bet!!!
And waiting for the quarterly magazines is part of it, - isn’t it? – With
so much enjoyment when they arrive!!

Regards from Liz. In Melbourne, Oz.

[lace] RE: lace-digest V2017 #34

2017-03-09 Thread lizlace
Very best wishes, Jeri, for your eye surgery. I hope all goes well for you.

I am just recovering from “Back of the eye” surgery, - and he did the
cataract while he was there! I had a filmy growth growing over the retina,
and he was able to get most of it out. It should improve my vision he said.
I hope so!! It is amazing what intricate surgeries can be done theses days, -
though there are not many surgeons around here that can do this major eye
surgery.
At least I still have one good eye, - and can still make lace – although
tatting is the best for me to see at the moment.

[lace] RE: Indian Lace.

2017-03-08 Thread lizlace
I remember Sulochona, Jeri, and was thinking of her when this thread first
surfaced – but could not remember her name! (I am Not good with names –
and getting worse, I’m afraid!)
We have not heard from her for Ages, and I wondered what had happened to her.
I do hope she is OK.

Have a good Holiday in China, David, and don’t forget to send us all a
travelogue as you go! (and get rid of that excess weight!!! )

[lace] Arachne lunch

2017-07-19 Thread lizlace
So sorry I just about missed the Arachne lunch - but we had to go
shopping, and it was the one grumpy shuttle driver, who was on a "Work
to Rule" session, I think, and would not come to pick us up from the
store earlier than his 'set' time. Grrr!!
Anyway, Devon came and sat with me while I ate my lunch, and showed me
what she was talking about a week or so ago, about an exhibition of
lace. Wow! She has the most marvelous Presentation, and it looks like an
exciting project.
Perhaps she will explain more, now, to us all so we can answer her
original questions!!

I am having a great time at IOLI, enjoying every moment, though the
Tatting class - doing it the Old Fashioned way, is stretching the brain
a bit. I am glad we do tattin "our" more modern way, though learning the
historical way is Very interesting! I love the History of Lace, and this
is just another gem to add to my knowledge.

Regards, Liz in Philadelphia, USA - normally in Melbourne, Oz.!!

[lace] Lace display

2017-05-16 Thread lizlace
Thank you for your help in making contact with the IOLI co-chair for the
Display Room at the IOLI convention. I have not been sent a display room
form, - and all is well!!

How did we ever exist before Arachne?!!! : )

(I wish I knew why some marks come up as gobbledegook, though, when I send to
this list. Grrr!! )

Some States in Australia have had their UK Lace magazines for nearly 2 weeks,
now, but those of us in Victoria and South Australia are still waiting for
ours to surface.More Grrr!!!

Regards from Liz. In grey, cold, Melbourne, Oz.

[lace] Travel Pillow etc.

2017-05-13 Thread lizlace
I have had a similar problem of needing a pillow at Conventions, -m and have
taken up the Host’s $5 offer of a foam block. I made a slightly raised
fabric cover – with a variety of sized felt pieces stitched to the centre
of a large square of fabric, that , when pinned on the block gave me a
slightly domed area to work on – more like my usual cookie pillow at them!!
It worked Very well, and I gave the foam piece away at the end of Convention,
as I could not bring it home.

I have not received the UK Lace Magazine yet. I keep watching for the pot, and
hoping it will surface soon. Maybe this week...!

Talking of Convention – I have been trying to get a form for the Lace
display room at Convention, and cannot get an answer from anyone there. I
have written twice to the link given on the Web site, and once to the
President of the local Guild, but without an answer, and someone else sent my
email address to the co-ordinator asking for one to be sent me and Still No
reply.
I wonder what has gone wrong, and why I cannot get a form, as I am prepared to
bring a couple of pieces of my lace for the Exhibition, - as I have done in
the past.
Can anyone help, please? Or advise..! It seems Very unusual.

Regards from Liz. In Melbourne, Oz.

[lace] Plaited laces.

2017-05-05 Thread lizlace
When I run out of thread, I hang the new thread on a pin , either at the back
or side of the work, and then tie the new bobbin to the old one that is
running out (I use a twisty or some sort to hold them together) and then work
a bit further – another inch perhaps, with the double thread.. When I feel
it is well secured, I throw out the empty bobbin, and continue with the new,
full, one. Later on – much later on! – I trim away the ends .
There may be a slight thickening of the threads in that one place, but they
won't notice in the overall appearance.

Love the quilts, Brian.
Regards from Liz.
