Re: Auction of 1200 in Louisiana ending in two weeks Current bid $80

2014-01-29 Thread mwfoscue
This is a pretty weak auction listing.  Only a few marginal photos and virtually no description - except that it is 96 inches and has a router.  No mention of Model number, gears included, etc.CAUTION:  Re-read the ad.    I did and find it is possible to interpret the following from it:13% "Internet Premium"13% "Buyer's Premium"  3% "Credit Card use" fee (if you pay with a credit card; easiest way to pay from afar)AND FINALLY: 10% -  Sales tax applied to invoice total, including Internet PremiumIf you calculate ALL of the above on the current "Next Bid"($450-12:30AM 30 Jan) - you get:Bid price:                  $450.00Internet Premium:       $58.50Buyer's Premium:        $58.50Credit Card use fee:    $13.50Sub total:                   $580.50State Tax @ 10%        $58.05Total "cost":             $638.55 for a $450 Winning bid. (That computes to an extra $188.55 or an approximate a 42% increase!)The above "Fees" seem excessive. I am not sure that they all "stack up" like I show above - BUT they conceivably could be.  The Tax "statement" is right from the listing and seems clear to me. If I were to bid in this one I'd be darn sure I knew how all these fees are calculated and applied.Good Luck if you are bidding!Mac-Original Message-

It's
a 1500 for sure.  It has the 2x multiplier gear installed but I don't see
any other gears.  Also the split nut for the x-axis is missing.  The
handle on the left side of the router is missing as well as the depth stop
rod.  The headstock is the standard delrin version.  The ball bearing
versions sits above the rails close to a 1/4".

As a part's machine it could be an ok
value.  $500 for the rail to a Legacy owner or $3.00 a lb to a scrap yard
:-(.  $150 for the multiplier gear.  $ 200.00 for the router if it's
quiet and the slow start is still working, $300 if refurbished.

That's my thoughts

Mac, that's good advice--and your look at the fees is actually hilarious.
It's a good deal still if you are in the vicinity.

Mike - and everyone else,My observation as well - Important to RTFP (Read The Fine Print)! If you were to place your bid right now - it'd have to be $425.  Adding 26% to $425 brings your "cost" to $535.50 - and you have not yet added in the cost to get it to your home/shop.I zoomed in on enlarged pics and noticed a couple things:1.  Appears the headstock has the ball/roller/thrust bearing assay vs the Delrin one.2.  The tailstock end appears to have been put on "backwards" - don't know if that was intentional.  You can see the part on it that was designed to mount the motor is to the rear.  This obviously does not affect the operation as currently configured - you'd just need to correct if mounting a motor later.#2 above brings up a noteworthy point.  Whenever you buy a machine (or anything else - like an BBQ grill @ HD for example) that was assembled by someone else, it is advisable to give it a good "once-over" (using assembly instructions if available) to be sure it is put together right AND that all fasteners are tight.  I recently bought a jointer on CraigsList.  When I got it home and gave it the "once-over" I discovered there were 4 or 5 screws/bolts missing(mostly in the leg assy. - not to mention a number that were very loose.  I also found that the leg assembly was not put together right - so I had to re-do that.  I did have the seller plug it in and turn it on - so I knew it worked.  That was my major concern - all the loose and "missing" screws were something I could deal with myself so I did not spend the time at his place checking that.By the way - many BBQs & bicycles are put together at the retail stores - often by minimum wage folks who have limited mechanical skills/knowledge and they are "graded" by how many they can get to the sales floor - not how well they are assembled.  I often find things improperly assembled - and if the mistake is significant, I point it out to a manager.Bottom Line:  When you buy a Mill - Please BE SURE it is assembled correctly. If you are bidding on the Louisiana Mill you have less than 23 hrs. - Good Luck!Mac-Original Message-

Re: Auction of 1200 in Louisiana ending in two weeks Current bid $80

2014-01-29 Thread curt george
Hello and Good morning,
the pictures are not very good, it looks to be a model 1500, (the same era as
my 1000. appx.2001) Which makes it a good machine with a few draw backs, The
biggest is the headstock has plastic bushing, which ware out quickly under a
heavy load.( in the past they were very easy to replace. butt...) That
Porter-Cable router is worth almost $400.00 by its self. so if you could pick
up this mill for anything under $1000.00 I think it would be a pretty good
deal. In the worst case the alum. rail and parts could be worth the expense?
The bid is now $425.00. I wonder is someone is going to get a Deal or a Steal
OF THE CENTURY at this auction? ;-)
Just my two cents worth of it.
Have a good day all.
