Thanks Cathy - I would have probably forgot to do a Check/Repair and it's nice to get a "Thumbs Up". [LegacyUG] migrating to new computer
Been a long time since I needed to change computers, so want to confirm my "plan". On the old computer with Legacy 7.5, I will do a Back Up of my current data file, to a Thumb drive, renaming the Back Up. "New Family File (date)". On the new computer, I will install Legacy 9. Open it and select Restore Family File, then navigate to my Thumb drive and select the "New Family File (date)". I have not been linking multi media files to my current family file on Legacy 7.5, so should not need to worry about those files needing to be moved. Is this the right way to do it? Anything else? Re: [LegacyUG] Master Locations List - Script error
Thanks Cathy. I've had V8 for a couple years or so but was trying to clean up some of the files in V7.5 before I started using it. Maybe someday I'll catch up with the rest of the world. Re: [LegacyUG] messed up my FDB file
Thank you all for your guidance. I have my family file put back together and after spending about 6 hours of examining it for strange stuff, I'm guessing that all is well again. I ended up exporting just those items that were changed After the time of the goof, then doing a normal merge. I'm glad that I exported parents and children of those individuals that were exported as some were common names that existed several times in my data base. Sure hope I'm smart enough to not get into this jackpot again. On Tue, Jan 8, 2013 at 11:54 PM, Byron byron...@charter.net wrote: ? It was a long day and it was late. Thanks Byron, What you describe is what I'm going to do this morning, with the exception of exporting to GedCom - I'm going to export to a new Legacy family file. Don't understand why you suggested GedCom. Jim. On Tue, Jan 8, 2013 at 12:25 AM, Byron byron...@charter.net wrote: Jim To shorten and minimize the number of entries you would need to examine and verify for a merge, you could take the ‘OLD’ file and do a search for individualsdate modifiedafter specified date to create a list of entries changed AFTER the date of your initial mess up. You could then tag these entries and export exclusively to a temporary gedcom file which you could then import into your ‘NEW’ file for a minimum number of individuals to verify the needed corrections to. I am not sure, but I would believe this would include events, and location changes, etc. Maybe Sherry or Brian could verify this for you. ** ** Good Luck either which way. Then I went merrily on my way entering new people, additional events, sources, etc. Problem is, sometimes I would be using the NEW file and sometimes using the OLD messed up file. I’m thinking that the easiest and most accurate way to bring the changes from the OLD file into the NEW file is to just Import the OLD file into the NEW file, then do a Merge. There are nearly 17,000 individuals in each file (48mg), but “probably” about 16,500 should merge automatically. - OR -- Maybe I should make a list of those changes made in the OLD file, then do a Manual Merge on ONLY those items? Re: [LegacyUG] messed up my FDB file
Hey JLB - thanks for the thoughts on just exporting and merging those records changed AFTER my Goof Date. I may just give that a try. I suppose I must export not only those people with changes after Goof Date, but also their spouse, parents, and children to be sure that I get the Linkages done properly in the NEW file. thanks again, Jim On Mon, Jan 7, 2013 at 12:26 PM, JLB j...@jgen.ws wrote: Your plan sounds OK to me.
