[LegacyUG] illegible data
I would simply enclose the missing information in square brackets and question mark: ... enlisted 181[?] or if you think you know what the illegible date is, but are not positive: ... enlisted 18[13?] I don't think it needs to be followed with explanation. [LegacyUG] illegible data
On p. 600 of my version of EE, ESM deals with illegible text by showing a footnote where the last digit of a year is rendered with an underline character followed by "[illegible]". So, ... enlisted 181_ [illegible]. I'm transcribing dozens of deeds for my Barton ancestor where a few to many words in a given deed are illegible. Should I render those words as "_" followed by the word "illegible" in square brackets? I am tempted to either supply the underline (and if so, is there a rule for how many characters) or the word "illegible" in brackets substituting for the illegible word, but not both an underline and "illegible" in square brackets following it. That seems like needlessly cluttering up the text. I'd appreciate hearing how others have treated this problem. Thanks.
