[Lubuntu-desktop] time-admin broken in Lubuntu 11.10 Alpha 1 - GTK3 issue

2011-06-04 Thread Jonathan Marsden
I know we don't have GTK3 stuff sorted in Alpha1. This is an example of
the kind of issues we may face as we migrate.

Clicking on Bird -> System Tools -> Time and Date does nothing visible.

Running

  sudo time-admin &

in LXterminal gets me

Gtk-ERROR **: GTK+ 2.x symbols detected. Using GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3 in
the same process is not supported
aborting...

which at least tells me what is happening :)

I am not sure if it is worth filing bugs in LP for this kind of thing
this early -- comments welcome on this.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Does Lubuntu still need anything in multiverse?

2011-06-04 Thread Jonathan Marsden
I noticed in

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~gilir/+junk/livecd-rootfs-lubuntu-support/revision/77

that we are telling the build system that we need multiverse.

But I *think* we should not be doing that any more. All packages in
11.04 were in main, universe or restricted.

Am I mistaken? Can anyone think of a reason why the Lubuntu CD needs
anything from multiverse, either in 11.04 Natty or in 11.10 Oneiric?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] The need to improve Lubuntu bug filing

2011-06-04 Thread Phill Whiteside
As mentioned, the A1 was built the 'old way' Hopefully by the time A2 comes
out our iso spinners will have full access to the autobuild system that
ubuntu use. It sure as hell will reduce the workload - feed in the files and
it spits out the various isos!! (And yes, I know it's a lot more complicated
than that, but a darn sight easier than building each one manually).

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] The need to improve Lubuntu bug filing

2011-06-04 Thread Phill Whiteside
hiyas Lance,

I'm sure both Julien (gilir) and Jonathan (JMarsden) will quickly bring you
up to speed. They are the ones responsible for spinning the iso's. AFAIK,
Julien is now a little freer to go bug hunting and JM is taking some of the
strain on iso generation, but with the new 'official' iso building coming in
they will both be kept busy. As an experienced iso tester your input will be
a massive help to lubuntu.

On an area I can assist in, back in the 'old' days when they removed the
forum for Wubi there was a lot of complaining (I know, I was amongst those
going WTF!) We'd spend ages trying to sort out a problem, and then they'd
tell you "oh, by the way I'm using WuBi"!

So, the chances of a lubuntu area are slightly less than a snowflake lasting
2 release cycles in hell.

It was me who asked a kindly forum moderator about the chances of us getting
a 'lubuntu' tag for questions, just as xubuntu and kubuntu etc. have, even
though we were not 'officially' a part of the family. I was told it would
take a little while for a 'meeting'... It must have been a real short
meeting. We got the flag VERY quickly. And yes, Mr Ubutnu Forum Moderator,
if you are on our mailing list - you know who you are - and Thanks!

Do drop by #lubuntu-offtopic on freenode for a chat, it's much easier and
faster than forums and emails. What we lack in quantity, we more than make
for in quality.

Phill.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] The need to improve Lubuntu bug filing

2011-06-04 Thread Lance
The forum thing was actually an afterthought, and perhaps a poor one.

My original intention was to explore the proper manner of filing bugs against
Lubuntu when it's known that the same bugs don't exist in Ubuntu or another
variant.

In this case the actual apps effected were probably casper and ubiquity, but I
knew the same issues weren't present in Ubuntu.

I know sometimes, if in doubt, filing against a meta-package will draw the
needed attention and get a bug properly reassigned.

Lubuntu is headed for 11.10, as it is the precursor for 12.04 (LTS) we need to
get as many bugs ironed out as possible during the 11.10 cycle (errr, you may
recall Grub2 coming out in 9.10 :P ).

Lubuntu is also now popping it's toe into the water for accessibility, but
realistically this is a couple of cycles away - we simply do not have enough
devs. Accessibility could do themselves a favour, but we do have a meeting
coming up under Jono Bacon to allow us to ask questions. It is times like this
I miss Ranch Hand's 'say it as it is' attitude, although JM one of our devs is
no shrinking violet. I'm sure he and Ranch Hand would get on great :P

My kindest regards to you and the rest of the testers,

Phill.
P.S. - Now go and dig me up a spare developer or two :D
@ Julien and JM - if there is any thing factually incorrect, please correct me.

I'm quite glad to see that Lubuntu will soon become an official member of the
Ubuntu family. I particularly look forward to the day that Lubuntu's images are
included in Ubuntu's iso-testing.

Anyway I obtained the Lubuntu Oneiric Alpha1 image here:

And naturally I encountered a few minor bugs. To expect any less this early in
a dev cycle is insane, but I still felt they should be reported. The specific
bugs are:

1) The Lubuntu Alpha1 Live CD boots to a tty, so you have to type startx to get
the DE.

2) The default DE lacks restart or shutdown buttons.

3) Upon completing the installation I was asked whether to restart or
 keep
using the Live DE as usual. I chose to restart and
the CD ejected as expected but the screen was just blank. So I removed the CD,
closed the tray and hit enter, but nothing
happened. I tried some common key combos but finally had to use the
reset button on my box to complete the restart.

Of course none of these are serious or unexp
