Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
I really wish they would fix the tables all over their site. Even my personal library of books thus purchased is a mess too. VO will not go down past the first detail row in the table. It jumps from row 3 back up to row 1 even if you have a dozen rows in the table. I have never seen this anomaly anywhere else on the web. VO's table navigation is generally quite good in HTML content. Take Control eBooks' September Sale
The sale has been extended to Wednesday 3 October. Also, and more importantly, Take Control have an accessible version of their catalog. It can be found here: http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/catalog-accessible This is just a complete list of all their books in an accessible table. It is much easier to navigate. The only problem with the accessible catalog is that discounts and sales are not applied automatically. You need to enter the voucher code manually. However, if you don't have this code, you can simply email Take Control Books and ask for the code, explaining that you are using the accessible version of their catalog. They are very helpful especially if you ask nicely. Best, Nic -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
I think you can use this coupon as many times as you want before the sale runs out. Cheryl's suggestion of using tab and shift tab to navigate is very robust. There's another way you can view all the listed books: one of the entries under links that shows up after all the specific topics is "Year Published". If you navigate to that link and activate it (VO-Space), you'll view a set of links like "2012Ebooks", "2011Ebooks", etc. and you tab to these and activate the links for books published by year. This can be helpful, because if you use the "All Ebooks" links you'll have about 3 different versions of GarageBand, multiple versions of the AirPort networking guides, etc. according to when they were updated. If you browse by year, you can start at 2012 and work back, and the most recent books are more likely to be of interest. This is also a good way to find the application-specific guides for third party software -- for example, if you're interested in using Scrivener on the Mac, there's a "Take Control of Using Scrivener 2" guide. I'm not sure exactly what time the sale ends, so check that the total has the discount applied. After the subtotal there should be a line with the coupon code and a negative amount that is half the subtotal. Then the total should be half the subtotal with the coupon code adjustment. You shouldn't have to enter the coupon code if you use the linked sale web site, though. When I used tab and shift-tab, the checkbox and the title of the book were associated so that I didn't have any problem telling what I was ordering. They were spoken together and as long as I didn't try to use vo-keys but just the space bar, each checkbox was checked though it didn't say "checked" when i pressed the space bar. I was able to fill my cart with 15 items all at once correctly by using this method. I was using the anniversary link that Esther provided but when I saw that this was only one category I went on to "all books" and added more books without losing the checkmarks on the books I had already chosen. Wile tabbing, I don't remember whether I was able to do vokeys-space on "buy selected books" or if I had to just hit enter. But I don't know whether I had any particular setting in safari that made tabbing work for me and the method suggested by others certainly also would work. Hi Steve, I don't need to use mouse keys to check the boxes on the Take Control site (see my previous post), but here's a link to an old post from the macvisionaries archives: • Re: mouse keys http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg64233.html You can skip most of the explanation, and just set up Mouse Keys to turn on and off with by pressing the Option key 5 times quickly under System Preferences > Accessibility (used to be "Universal Access" in earlier version of the OS) under the Mouse & Keyboard options, and if you're using Mountain Lion, you can also use Command-Option-F5, I think, to get to the panel to enable or disable Mouse Keys. Make sure to do the verbosity set-up in VoiceOver utility that Anne described. (It's explained in more detail in the linked post). Then you can click on controls using your "i" key. HTH. Hi Steve and Others, I navigated the table entries by setting the web rotor to form controls. Then if you use VO-U you can move down the list to the item you want and use VO-Space or your Up+Down arrow keys to check/uncheck the box. By default the listed entries will be set to "Mountain Lion", I think. To change the listed entries to something else, set your web rotor to links, use VO-U, and choose "All Ebooks" (a really long list, though, so I don't necessarily recommend it) or arrow down past topics to "General Macintosh", "Apple's Mac Apps", "Other Mac Apps", "Airport & Wi-Fi", etc. Then activate the link to reload the new entries, navigate to the heading "Save 50% During the Take Control September Sale!", and VO-Right or Right Arrow to the table. The other way that works for me is to use item chooser menu (VO-I), then type the first few letters of "unchecked". Navigate down to the title you want, and use VO-Space or the Up+Down arrow keys to check or uncheck the box. The issue I have when choosing a link to load up another set of books is that these navigation controls don't refresh with the new entries as being associated with the titles. If I toggle VoiceOver on and off, I can view the newly selected entries under Form Controls in the web rotor, or when I use item chooser menu and type "u n c" to find the unchecked entries, and then I can check or uncheck the boxes without any use of Mouse Keys. I'm trying to figure out how to use the mouse keys again; I've only done this some while ago. I certainly cannot find the checkboxes. Any review possible? I can't seem to find anything in VO helps about mouse keys either. Sorry for so much trouble. If these books weren't that interesting, I wouldn't bother with this pig of a website!!! Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
Hello Steve, I've just had a look at this table and it's a total mess! I can get further down through it by using mousekeys, but the VoiceOver cursor won't go there. This site is renowned for being horrible to navigate in any case. Sorry not to have a better solution, but mousekeys is all that works for me. If you want to try this method, make sure that you have the check box Speak text under mouse after delay checked in the Verbosity category, Announcements tab, in VoiceOver utility. Oh yes, and set the delay to zero. Cheers, Anne On 30 Sep 2012, at 18:30, Steve Holmes wrote: > Help!!! Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
I just went to a familiar transit site and looked up a bus schedule and that table navigated just fine. So it is the table on the Take Control Books site that doesn't work for me. Any ideas out there on how to get around their table? Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
Help!!! Something terribly wrong with navigation of tables or something. When I go to the below site and try and navigate the table, I can't go down through the remaining rows. While inside the table of books, I use the VO-Arrow keys to try and go on down past row 2 but it appears to be going across the table and then it wraps back to top row again. What might I be doing wrong here? I haven't had trouble with tables in HTML before. I'm using 10.8.2. Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale
I had little bit of trouble with this website in safari but found that if I changed settings in voiceover utility > web, I could navigate the table. But I'm having trouble telling whether or not my discount is being applied. Next to the filled-in coupon it says "enter coupon" button. I didn't know whether this was if yu wanted to enter another coupon or to confirm that one but whether I hit that button or not, the prices stayed the same. So I'm sitting here on the Paypal website trying to decide whether to put this through or not. I do a lot of shopping online so hopefully I'm not just failing to look closely enough. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Take Control eBooks' September Sale
Hi All, The Take Control ebooks, one of the great sources of information for the Mac and iOS devices, are on sale for the end of September with a coupon code of "CPN20921SEPSALE" (without the quotation marks) that will give a 50% discount when applied at check out up through the end of September. These books are DRM-free, and are available in both PDF and ePub versions. Furthermore, once you purchase a book, which generally lists for $10 or $15, you can get all minor version revisions free and re-download alternate formats from your account, and often you can get a discount on the new major version of the eBook. I'm cc'ing this to the viphone list, because some titles, such as "Take Control of iTunes" or even "Take Control of Switching to the Mac", may be of interest. For Mac users, titles such as "Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion", "Take Control of Using Mountain Lion", "Take Control of Troubleshooting Your Mac, Second Edition", "Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal" (for learning to use Terminal and unix concepts), "Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac", and "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network, Third Edition" (for general Wi-Fi setups and use) might be of interest. These guides are very hands on and practical; some of them have information that I've never found anywhere else. If you log in through their special anniversary sale link, the coupon code should get filled in automatically. This URL is: http://tid.bl.it/september-sale-mountain-lion Alternatively, if this web page is busy, you can go to their catalog page: http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/catalog You can browse the "Take Control" titles in iBooks, if you have an iOS device, but the discounted price and the ability to download alternative formats and be informed of new, free, updates is only available for purchases made through their web site. (I find it easier to browse the titles in iBooks). I'll put in a few sample direct links to specific books on their web site: • Take Control of iTunes 10: The FAQ, Second Edition http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/itunes • Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-apple-mail • Take Control of Using Mountain Lion http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-using • Take Control of Switching to the Mac http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/switching • Take Control of Backing up Your Mac http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/backing-up • Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/command-line • Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network, Third Edition http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/airport-n There are also good guides for GarageBand, third party apps such as Scrivener.
