this sounds like a difficult one... how are you doing to do this?

isn't this one actually higher? afaik the matchings come from ascii, and
digits are always less than letters? (ie: 1 < m )?

No this is not ascii
rpm first compares the numeric part (numbers and dots), then if they
are equal compares the rest

2011-04-30 Thread magnus
.Mondo: The version number in Mandriva is a little bit confusing.
2.29.3 belongs to 2.2.9.3 in the origin mondo repository.
There is version 2.2.9.6 actually (2011-04-13).
So the Mageia version 2.2.9.5 is near by

Well, I thought that having a new distro was also the opportunity to
remove the mistakes made in the past.

So as the upstream of mondo, I'd really like to see packages in Mageia
using the upstream versions, and not stick to the legacy of Mandriva
here.

Of course, for people updating that may create a problem, but not that
difficult to solve and could be documented on a wiki page as known and
justified incompatibilities.

If we don't do it now, it will never be done :-(
Bruno.

I agree with Bruno and so I think Mageia is on a good way :-)

Or simply fixed by adding an epoch

Or you can use epoch.

While we are on it, what about afio ?
The license is unclear for fedora :

Oh, please no !!!
Epoch is somewhere the negation of versions. And then you have to
embedded it all the time in all packages.

I think we should have a rule to avoid as much a possible an epoch.
Most of the time it's just for avoiding an incompatibility which will
force the distribution to keep it for the rest of its life. So adopting
one should be only rare, and incompatibilities are generally solved with
the +1 version. So if it's documented ...

I remember that very well. This is a good reason BTW why mondo is still
not part of Fedora.

That's also what I disklike in Fedora, their pickiness on everything,
especially when a SW predates the birth of the person in charge of legal
;-)

Well, I still consider afio a free software myself, surely not in the
sense of the GPL. If you prefer to have it in PLF, why not, but I think
that contrib is appropriate. I never had any answer from the contact I
tried to make with the original writer.

Epoch was designed for issues when you want to fix versioning or force a
downgrade.

In this case, you want to fix the versioning as it was done in mdv, and
from rpm/urpmi point of view force a downgrade
(2.2.9.5 < 2.29.3)

> I think we should have a rule to avoid as much a possible an epoch.

We do, when it comes to Cauldron -> Cauldron changes/reverts.

But upgrades from stable releases, it will be added if it is needed to
provide a simple upgrade path, no exceptions.

> Most of the time it's just for avoiding an incompatibility which will
> force the distribution to keep it for the rest of its life. So adopting

Thats the price you have to pay when you want to alter versioning
downwards or otherwise fix it...

> one should be only rare, and incompatibilities are generally solved with

NO!

rpm/urpmi does not read release notes, errata or other documentation
(and neither does most endusers)

rpm/urpmi only cares about epoch:version-release

And we stated from the beginning of Mageia that we will support upgrade
from 2010.1/2

So we dont do exceptions for package(r)s

So, either you or someone else will have to add the epoch to satisfy
rpm/urpmi upgrade path, and it needs to be done quickly as we are soon
to enter release freeze and release RC.

I'd rename it to the more logical kde4-config-netbook and add an
obsoletes entry (this also avoids bumping epoch).

I think it divides it to groups that contain only numbers or letters
(the string is divided on non-number<=>number and non-letter<=>letter
transitions), with letters considered smaller than numbers:

1 = 1
7 = 7
9 = 9
10 = 10
mga < 1
=> mdv one is bigger

I sort of agree on that point; I can't remember how many times I typed
'urpmi {mandriva,mageia}-kde4-config-{free,Default}, only to be
greeted by "Package not found". The common package is
mageia-kde4-config-common, it's logical to have
mageia-kde4-config-{Default,netbook,foo} IMHO.

Isn't that too high for a new distribution ?

In that case, the move was done upstream as well, as it wsa wrongly
named first.
But that has been done back in "2006-03-20 Mondo 2.0.7 / Mindi 1.0.7 are
out".

Isn't is possible to find another way to cure an old mistake ?

Could we not deliever mondo e.g. in the first version of mageia, and
start with the second one ?

THey're wrong, you learn a lot in them ;-)

Well I can understand that for core packages, but for contrib, that's a
unique opportunity to fix what was wrong.

iCould I do something on the mandriva side (as I'm also packager there)
to fix it ? Like breaking compatibility there instead of here ;-)

I'm still looking for a solution that would allow us to follow the right
numbering for the life of Mageia, without forcing the usage of Epoch.

The only solution I see, would be to move upstreram back to 2.30 or 3.x,
but the modifications I'm making there are really on a stable branch and
do not justify at all that numbering (I did the reverse 5 years ago)

Is there a way to ask urpmi to remove mondo first if it is installed ?
Or use the skip.list to avoid playing with it in that version ?
Looking at urpmi man pages, it doesn't seem there is one conf file that
could allow with rules to force certain actions to be taken to orientate
the upgrade.

Or not provide mondo in this version, and install the right one in the
next one ?
I know that none of these look interesting :-(

The only ways to prevent an epoch increase now are actually "interesting":
  - change the name of the package
  - use a time machine to prevent the earlier mistake
