Re; [Marxism] [UCE] Fwd: The Rise and Fall of the Socialist Party of
America | Jacobin

I look for a history of the working class in the US that situates it in
the world while at the same time closely documenting from the available
archives the felt experiences of real people, not "leaders," in that
class. Sort of on the model of E P Thompson's The Making of the English
Working Class, a close reading of that history in its lived context,
centered on working people, with the experience of parties and sects if
present at all, on the periphery of or reflective of that narrative. I
would look for such a project to bring it up to the ominous present,
where the members of the American working class seem to be stuck in our
"exceptional state," the empire, living off the proceeds of the rest of
the world from whence comes the product we preponderantly consume, and
due to which we cannot or choose not presently to join the rest of the
working world in solidarity, let alone engender any faint recognition of
class belonging or significant sense of common plight and purpose
domestically. This in the context of global capital run rampant. If
there is such, one that combines global breadth of analysis with
historical detail and sociological depth, I haven't seen or I don't
remember it. Who can render this portrait for us to hold in front of our
uncomprehending, denying faces? Hell, we're so stuck on ourselves we
can't even include the Cubans, the Dominicans, the Venezuelans, the
Japanese or more than one or two Canadian teams in our baseball "World
Series."

I see this all the time with physics, for instance, with the use of the

For me the point of the story is simply that it matters what people think. I
just heard this individual on CTV saying,"I am not racist or anything."
We don't know who the anti-racist message reaches, until a moment like this.

[Marxism] Fwd: Russian Bolsheviks, Ukrainian Communists, and the Comintern: How Russian Bolsheviks Shaped Foreign Radical Leftist Views on Ukraine, by Stephen Velychenko | KRYTYKA

Those who follow Ukrainian issues today know that many foreigners who
consider themselves radical leftists oppose that country’s attempt to
break away from its former imperial master. Surprisingly, they support
the attempt of a capitalist Russian government that legitimates itself
in terms of religion, has an imperialist foreign agenda based on
settler-colonist minorities beyond its borders, and subscribes to
“spheres of influence” thinking to re-impose its control over Ukraine.
It is a re-imposition that, as of 2014, involved the use of military
force in Ukraine.1 Such a position is at odds with such fundamental
statements of left-wing positions as the Zimmerwald Manifesto of 1915
and Trotsky’s 1939 comments on Ukraine’s experience of Stalinism:2

The bureaucracy strangled and plundered the people within Great Russia,
too. But in Ukraine matters were further complicated by the massacre of
national hopes. Nowhere did restrictions, purges, repressions and in
general all forms of bureaucratic hooliganism assume such murderous
sweep as they did in Ukraine in the struggle against the powerful,
deeply-rooted longings of the Ukrainian masses for greater freedom and
independence.

Their stance places such leftists alongside those they normally regard
as their enemies: big bankers, corporate directors, and lawyers who
profit from their contacts with Vladimir Putin and his associates, as
well as pro-Kremlin fascist and neo-Nazi parties in their respective
countries.3 Normally, North American and EU pro-Kremlin radical leftists
have little influence on the foreign policies of their countries.
Academic analysts who do not research radicalism normally ignore them.
However, they deserve attention today because, together with the other
above-mentioned pro-Kremlin groupings and parties, they influence public
opinion, and sometimes a government foreign policy decision, in matters
related to Russia and Ukraine. Internet commentary on Maidan-related
articles reveals that many such leftists share the Russian government’s
anti-Ukrainian position.4 EU voters recently gave approximately the same
percentage of votes to radical left as to radical right parties
(8-10%).5 Certainly, specific political circumstances account for this
phenomenon. 6 However, there is also a historical factor that explains
why many in today’s foreign Left, who without hesitation oppose
Anglo-American neo-colonialism and neo-liberal capitalism within their
own countries, suspend their avowed anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist,
anti-corporate democratic ideals when looking at what is Russian
neo-colonialism in eastern Europe and Ukraine.7

While foreign pro-Russian leftists differ among themselves in details,
they share, along with Putin and the Kremlin ruling elite, two basic
ideas. First, that Russia has a “sphere of influence” like the US, but
that unlike those living within the US “sphere,” those living within the
Russian “sphere” should make no effort to rid themselves of Russian
domination and/or hegemony. And, second, that “nationalism” in Ukraine
never had and does not have today the “progressive” role such leftists
assign, or assigned to, countries subject to American or western
European imperialism or to neo-imperialist and neo-colonialist rule. In
their view, Russian migrants to Ukraine were not settler-colonists, as
claimed by Ukrainian Marxists, and Russian rule in, or control over,
Ukraine neither was nor is imperialist or colonialist. Implicit in these
assumptions is the Russian Bolshevik idea that “the proletariat” could
not be chauvinist or nationalist, and that “socialism” could not be
imperialist.

Although the USSR, the CPSU, and the Comintern no longer exist and
Putin’s ruling circle no longer shares the latter two opinions, networks
of comrades still subscribe to such notions. Pro-Kremlin leftists, in
short, are blind to Russian imperialism past and present.8 A major step
in channeling foreign radical leftists to think about Russia and its old
empire according to such Russo-centric criteria and blinding them to the
existence of a Ukrainian anti-colonial Marxist tradition occurred in
1920 when Russian Bolshevik leaders excluded the Ukrainian Communist
Party, from the Second Comintern Congress.

The author's repeated use of the phrase "union bosses" is curious,
especially considering his generally pro-labor tone.

More importantly, this is not 1919. The mass union base of that year is
gone - although potentially a new base, built primarily but not exclusively
on teachers, nurses, service sector in general, could (in fact must) be
built.

True, one successful, even partial, general strike could change things
dramatically. On the other hand, it could lead instead to a US version of
the repeated "show" general strikes a la Greece, France, etc.

So in sum, the article is great for opening - but just opening - a
discussion on context.

p.s. There's tons on the 1919 strike at marxists.org; try typing "steel
strike" in the search field.

By Howie Hawkins

THE POLITICAL DYNAMIC augured well for a progressive third party
challenge in 2016. With the two most unpopular major party candidates in
history, and a large progressive vote mobilized for Sanders in the
Democratic primaries, hopes were high that the Greens could do much
better, perhaps reaching five percent or more to secure general election
federal funding for the 2020 Green presidential campaign.

But lacking a large, well-organized membership base to provide local
legs for the campaign and a sizable cohort of Green elected officials to
give the Green Party political weight, the campaign was marginalized by
the media and discounted by the voters. So the limited gains for the
Greens should not be surprising at all.

Until the Green Party has built a real power base of well-organized,
dues-paying members and elected Green caucuses in city councils, state
legislatures and the U.S. House, it will not be taken seriously in a
presidential run by most media and most voters. It is now time for the
Greens to go back to grassroots organization and movement building.

As we enter Trump time, the Greens and the broader left should learn
from their mistakes during the Bush II era when too many got caught up
in the Anybody-But-Bush strategy to get the Democrats back in power. For
the Greens, that approach yielded the divisive and self-defeating
safe-states strategy of 2004 by one faction of the party, which
undermined the party’s very rationale for existing as an independent
alternative.

Greens should be friendly with grassroots Democrats in the
Sanders/Warren wing as they quixotically try (again) to replace
corporate Democrats with progressive Democrats.

Greens should work with them in the fightback against Trumpist
scapegoating and oppression of immigrants, minorities and women,
expansion of the security and surveillance state, imperial wars, climate
madness, cuts to public health care and schools, union-busting and on
many other fronts.

But the real power structure of the Democratic Party — the corporate
donors and their political representatives, led now by the corporate
neoliberal Chuck Schumer — will do what corporate Democrats always do
with progressive Democratic personalities: use them as bait to lure
progressives into a supporting corporate Democrats as the lesser evil.

Russian state-owned media, such as Russia Today (RT), Sputnik and
Russian national TV position themselves as reliable alternatives to what
they label “main stream media”. The use of international commentators
and experts by these Russian media does not necessarily reflect the
depths of their expertise, rather whether their positioning is in line
with pro-Kremlin narratives.

Readers of the Disinformation Review will for example recall the recent
appearance of a Belgian commentator in a Russian talk show where he
shouted that “thousands of women are being raped every day” on the
streets of Brussels. When not appearing on Russian national TV, the same
commentator has organised events with a former leader of the Ku-Klux
clan and a former leaders of the British National Party. In a piece from
Sputnik, he gives an “exclusive interview” in the role of a “Belgian
political scientist and director of geopolitical research centre”. Here
he repeats disinformation about the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine,
claiming that “there are facts that the Russians did not do it” and
“that there is proof that it wasn’t Russia”.
The Belgian example is just one of many where Russian state-controlled
media systematically invite contributions from far-right commentators
from European countries – people with very limited impact in the
communities they come from. Many of these “experts” are also invited to
rally in Russia around shared far-right political agendas.
