?Cultural Marxism? might sound postmodern but it?s got a long, toxic

Illusions in New Zealand imperialism run very deep. Indeed, most people
in this country, even on the left, probably don’t accept the idea that New
Zealand is even imperialist at all. From the right to the liberal-left
there is also widespread support for armed intervention abroad, as long as
it takes the guise of ‘peace-keeping’ and especially if it has the
imprimatur of the United Nations.

New Zealand is also seen, especially in this country itself, as ‘different’
from the old colonial powers of Western Europe and the great twentieth
century imperialist power, the United States.

The role of NZ rule in Samoa, which lasted almost fifty years, indicates,
however, that our ruling class and their colonial administrators were every
bit as bad as those of the old European powers.

NZ’s ruling elite had wanted to get hold of a Pacific empire right from

*Parliament is considering a law change to allow people to change their sex
on their birth certificates by simply filling out a form. If the law is
passed there will be no requirement to show any proof of living as the
opposite sex. When people have raised concerns about the possibility that
this could be abused by predatory males (demanding access to female
changing rooms, public toilets, women’s refuges, being housed in women’s
prisons etc) they have been attacked with slander, threats and slurs by
some strident transactivists. The transactivist campaign has been
grotesquely authoritarian, energetically censoring, de-platforming, and
hounding those who even question the implications of these changes.*

*We reprint below an article by Renee Gerlich, a feminist, activist and
writer, who has been raising concerns and calling for a proper consultation
before any change is made that can impact the rights of women. The article
was published on Scoop Media on May 28 this year, and then taken down some
time later. Scoop editors Joe Cederwall and director Alastair Thompson had
removed it without consulting Renee. She was never given any satis**factory
explanation of why her article was censored. . .*

Socialism and Democracy is looking for someone to review:

REENCHANTING THE WORLD: FEMINIST ESSAYS ON THE COMMONS by Silvia Federici.

Publisher's Blurb:

In this collection of Silvia Federici's essays, spanning over twenty years, she
provides a detailed history and critique of the

politics of the commons from a feminist perspective. In her clear and

combative voice, Federici provides readers with an analysis of some of the

key issues and debates in contemporary thinking.

Drawing on rich historical research, she maps the connections between the

previous forms of enclosure that occurred with the birth of capitalism and

the destruction of the commons and the "new enclosures" at the heart of the

present phase of global capitalist accumulation. Considering the commons

from a feminist perspective, this collection centers on women and

reproductive work as crucial to both our economic survival and the

construction of a world free from the hierarchies and divisions capital has

planted in the world proletariat. Federici is clear that the

commons should not be understood as happy islands in a sea of exploitative

relations but rather autonomous spaces from which to challenge the existing

capitalist organization of life and labor.

If you would like to write a review of this book, write to me at
george.snede...@verizon.net

Sassoon's Public Statement Of Defiance
by Siegfried Sassoon

'I am making this statement as an act of wilful defiance of military
authority, because I believe the war is being deliberately prolonged by
those who have the power to end it.

I am a soldier, convinced that I am acting on behalf of soldiers. I
believe that this war, upon which I entered as a war of defence and
liberation has now become a war of aggression and conquest. I believe
that the purposes for which I and my fellow soldiers entered upon this
war should have been so clearly stated as to have made it impossible to
change them, and that, had this been done, the objects witch actuated us
would now be attainable by negotiation.

I have seen and endured the suffering of the troops, and I can no longer
be a party to prolong these sufferings for ends which I believe to be
evil and unjust. I am not protesting against the conduct of the war, but
against the political errors and insincerity's for which the fighting
men are being sacrificed.

On behalf of those who are suffering now I make this protest against the
deception which is being practised on them; also I believe that I may
help to destroy the callous complacence with which the majority of those
at home regard the continuance of agonies which they do not share, and
which they have not sufficient imagination to realise.'

 Forwarded Message
Subject:Announcing Socialist Forum launch

  Democratic Socialists of America

Dear Louis,

The revived /Socialist Forum, /DSA’s political discussion bulletin, has
just launched! Here’s the full announcement from the /Socialist Forum’s/
editorial committee. See below to find out more about /Socialist Forum/
and how it relates to our other DSA venues.

In solidarity,

Maria Svart
DSA National Director

*We’re pleased to announce the launch of DSA’s newest publication,
Socialist Forum.
*
DSA’s rapid growth over the last two years, and its “big-tent”
character, has made it all the more important that we have this venue
for serious, thorough, and non-sectarian political debates and discussions.

Much has also been written about the meaning of “democratic socialism”
in the present. But for many years, our organization has lacked a space
where these ideas could be discussed in such a fashion.

/Socialist Forum/ is a revival of an old DSA journal of the same name.
It’s meant to complement other DSA venues, including /Democratic Left/
and our blog, DSA Weekly.

Unlike those venues, *Socialist Forum has consciously been designed as a
space for more theoretical reflection,*

intended to help develop a theory and practice of democratic socialism
for the twenty-first century. We also want to contribute to the broader
theoretical and political discussions on the Left.

Socialist Forum will appear quarterly, and feature long-form essays that
address a specific question, topic, or theme in depth. The theme of the
inaugural issue is the question of “political revolution” and its
meaning in the U.S. today.

*Published contributions will represent as wide a range of views in DSA
as possible. *The editorial board of Socialist Forum is composed of
members with various points of view on important political questions,
 and
it doesn’t adhere to a single theoretical or strategic perspective.
Essays published in the journal reflect the views of their contributors.
They are not intended to establish a DSA “party line” on any given issue.

Our goal is not just to publish a new issue of /Socialist Forum/ every
few months, but to integrate the publication into DSA’s ongoing
political education work as much as possible. We hope the essays in the
journal become the subjects of robust debate and discussion, that they
generate constructive feedback and criticism, and that they act as the
initial steps for an ongoing conversation about our common political
project.

— The /Socialist Forum /Editorial Committee

This wasn't the only fruit that blossomed from the Progressive Party tree.

Following the failure of the independent 1948 Presidential campaign of
Henry A. Wallace, two former supporters of the Wallace effort met at the
farm in New Hampshire where one of them was living. The two men were
literary scholar and Christian socialist F.O. "Matty" Matthiessen and
Marxist economist Paul Sweezy, who were former colleagues at Harvard
University. Matthiessen came into an inheritance after his father died
in an automobile accident in California and had no pressing need for the
money. Matthiessen made the offer to Sweezy to underwrite "that magazine
[Sweezy] and Leo Huberman were always talking about," committing the sum
of $5,000 per year for three years. Matthiessen's funds made the launch
of Monthly Review possible, although the amount of the seed money was
reduced to $4,000 per year in the second and third years by the
executors of Matthiessen's estate following his suicide in 1950.

It was Sartre’s discovery of political commitment, socialism, and
Marxism that enabled him to move away from the twin impasses
immortalized in his precepts “Hell is other people” (No Exit) and “Man
is a useless passion” (Being and Nothingness). When he entered the world
to stay as a political essayist, dramatist, and social philosopher—as
well as an activist—it was in relation to Marxist movements, societies,
and ideas. After the Liberation, talk of revolution, the existence of
the Soviet Union, and the vitality of the massive French Communist Party
(PCF) made it possible for many to believe that, in however distorted
and ugly a manner, a better world was coming into being. Both
politically and philosophically Sartre became preoccupied with Marxism,
and he remained so for three-quarters of his productive life.

The geographic diversity of these victories should not disguise their
economic homogeneity. Among the nearly forty House districts where
Democrats took control in 2018, about thirty are rated “prosperous” or
“comfortable” by the Economic Innovation Group, a bipartisan think tank.
Of the forty-three “distressed” districts held by Republicans, Democrats
flipped just two (NJ-2 and NM-2).

In other words, the midterms confirmed that the Democrats have become —
perhaps more than ever before in their two-hundred-year history — a
party of the prosperous. The millionaire and billionaire governors, like
Phil Murphy in New Jersey and J.B. Pritzker in Illinois, are only the
gaudiest new constructions on the Democratic block.

Cast your eye across a list of the twenty richest House districts in the
United States, measured by median income: every single one of them now
has a Democratic representative. Of the wealthiest forty districts,
thirty-five of them just elected a Democrat; of the wealthiest fifty,
that number is forty-two.
